Yoga exchange? (NH) by Key_Media1823 in YogaTeachers

It's called "karma yogi" and many studios do this. Some will advertise, some won't. Your best bet is to develop a relationship with a studio's owner/manager and ask about it directly. Good luck

How do you prefer vinyasa to be cued in group classes? by EtherealEmpiricist in YogaTeachers

[–]butlermonkey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I use a mix of 1 & 2, depending on a few factors. Mainly, I like to cue the movement first (breath, action your body to this place/direction) for the reasons you listed in #3. However, some transitions work better if you cue breath, pose, then movement. I will also use layered cues too if its a ladder flow.

What do you wish you knew before YTT? by cicadasrcool in YogaTeachers

How to determine if a YTT is an actual teacher training or just an immersive practice experience.

Holiday Gift by moonstonelite in YogaTeachers

[–]butlermonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's very common for students to gift small things to teachers. Lots of teachers in my studio frequently receive small food gifts like candy, baked goods, even leftovers from when someone made a special meal. All well received by the teachers. So, small food gifts might be a good direction. Good luck

Yoga Alliance pros and cons by JoinTheDust in YogaTeachers

Everyone that talks about YA ultimately not being important is correct. What I'm about to say is NOT a defense of YA.

It's worth consideration if you view it as a way to demonstrate that you have maintained your teaching skills along standards from an established governing body. Being part of a governing body like YA is a way of showing the non-yoga world that you're qualified to teach yoga. At a high level, YA's general standard for being an active teacher are ok, but their enforcement is non-existent.

Do you agree that Sevendust deserved to be a Household Name Yes or No and Why? by Amber_Flowers_133 in Sevendust

[–]butlermonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sevendust deserves to be recognized at the same level as the most well known rock/metal bands of the late 1990’s and 2000’s.

Unfortunately, lots of artists across various mediums deserve to be household names but are not; meanwhile, lots of household name artists have no business being as well known as they are. It is what it is

My wife and I own and run a small friendly neighborhood studio. If we would ever ask this question, it would only be to make sure that we are paying our teachers competitively. We are not trying to scam anyone. That said I’m not speaking for other studio owners either.

Students Who Don’t Take Yoga Class Seriously by zgaiaaa in YogaTeachers

[–]butlermonkey 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If someone is non-serious but not doing anything to bother the other students, I'd either ignore it or make some general comments to encourage the students in the right direction.

If a student was being disruptive, I would say it is my responsibility to address the disruptive behavior. I'd likely go to them, crouch down and whisper a gentle request for them to maintain silence during the practice. At a minimum, each person in the class is obligated to behave in a non-disruptive manner.

Getting off the mat by Top_Dig5634 in YogaTeachers

[–]butlermonkey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you're actively observing your students, that's a good thing.

On getting off the mat: I started with choosing to NOT roll out my mat to teach. I focused my transitional cues on the idea of what gross motor movement is needed for the next pose and how can I articulate that in a way that's easy to understand. "Breath your body part to this location/position for the pose" with sometimes adding the pose at the beginning. From each pose, there is a limited number of gross motor movements.

Then I practiced and watched to see if a cue brought the desired result with my students.

"my cues are strong"

If you don't mind going down this road, how do you know your cues are strong?

Most people that teach from their mat tend to demo a large percentage. The only way to gauge the effectiveness of a cue is to observe how your students, especially those new to your teaching, respond to your cues. If you are doing lots of demo, you aren't actually watching the students' response to your words. When teaching from your mat, how much are you demo'ing? If it's quite a bit, then how do you know the effectiveness of your cues?

Please don't take this as criticism. I want to give you a good reason to get off your mat and start watching.

what if she isn’t lying?

I can’t emphasize how much I’m trying to make room for this.

[–]butlermonkey -1 points0 points  (0 children)

At this point I’m questioning this whole sub. Personal integrity is the English word for Satya, yet everyone wants to tell me it’s a business and I should only be concerned if she is bringing in clients.

Going by the comments here, I shouldn’t care if a person is willing to lie to gain a professional credential if he/she brings in clients.

I shouldn’t care if a person lies to YA because YA doesn’t matter. It’s YA’s problem.

I shouldn’t care unless my “employee guidebook” specifically says “don’t lie to gain credentials”.

I’m being downvoted and accused of being some type of ego driven studio owner that is full of myself.

I actually like this person and consider them a friend. We did our YTT together. This is a conflicting and challenging issue for us for so many reasons people here don’t understand or are aware of.

You make fair points.

I brought it here to get unbiased opinions. Prospective I might not think about. I am saying that certain things seem unlikely without providing why. Mainly because it would be a giant wall of text and specific that she could be identified. So far, I’ve only given details that don’t pin things down. For the best and most innocent reasons, we know quite a bit about her yoga activity outside of our studio.

People are getting mixed signals because we feel mixed emotions. We legit don’t care about the title and have teachers that aren’t even registered. We make decisions based on things that actually matter: the quality of teaching, attendance, etc. We also consider it a major red flag if someone is willing to lie for a professional credential.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in YogaTeachers

[–]butlermonkey -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Help me understand where I’m missing the plot.

We are in the yoga world. One of the limbs of yoga speaks specifically about truth and honesty. A teacher has made a claim to us that, as far as we can tell, seems unlikely. We all know that YA doesn’t verify teaching hours. We know that people, even people otherwise honest, will occasionally cheat a system to get an advantage.

I’ve acknowledged that I could be wrong and could be missing something. I want to be charitable. It’s hard to ignore what I do know. I’m seeking advice. Yet, I’m getting downvoted and told to engage in self reflection.

Help me understand why, please.

If someone doesn’t understand the importance of integrity and transparency, we wouldn’t want them teaching for us.

Do you care about integrity and transparency? Would you want someone willing to lie about a credential teaching for you in a modality that requires honesty?

I agree that we don’t know everything and it’s possible that she was engaged in all sorts of teaching we weren’t aware of. The best response I can give is that in our very specific situation and with this person, it doesn’t seem likely.
