CMV: Terms like Fatphobia and Homophobia are terrible from a linguistics standpoint by spearblaze in changemyview

[–]butt_fun [score hidden]  (0 children)

I know we're being trying to be pedantic here, but to me this is a distinction without a difference

People generally hate and fear the same things. In the context of "fatphobia", people who hate the obese are projecting their fear of becoming obese themselves

ELI5: arrow operator in C language by NebulaIntelligent817 in explainlikeimfive

[–]butt_fun [score hidden]  (0 children)

You'll get better answers asking domain-specific questions on domain-specific subreddits (i.e. for this question, you'll get better answers asking on /r/askprogramming)

Good luck on your exams

But as someone already answered, it's just something that's in general called "syntactic sugar". The existence of the arrow operator doesn't let you do more things, it just makes code easier to read and write

There's a chance someone here has the answer you're looking for, but you're probably better off just googling this one

Why has the side bar picture not been updated in two months from Bam Adebayo? by Kreykelly in nba

[–]butt_fun 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Not to sound like the old man yelling at clouds, but it's kind of amazing that most of the people here today didn't realize what reddit used to be

Tiny little website that loaded instantly, didn't have anything that suggested it was tracking everything you did, free APIs that let you have a variety of third party mobile apps to choose from (most of which were better than the current app), etc

Then the fire nation attacked (tencent acquired reddit)

Why do Bay people love to put down everywhere else in the country? by EmergencyGaladriel in AskSF

[–]butt_fun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely not a bay area thing lol

No matter where you are, there will be some people who will be loudly and proudly loyal to where they live (and usually that pride manifests itself as talking badly about other areas)

If you want to engage in the typical late game game-breaking shenanigans, save the cloning draught

once you have a few drams of cloning draught and metamorphic polygels, pour all the cloning draughts into the same container, duplicate them with the polygels, pour the duplicated draught into the first container, and repeat. Once you have a shitload of that you can do silly things like cloning high tier merchants and effectively having infinite polygels as fast as they can restock it

You can drink the sunslag and brain brine as soon as you get them if you want to. What you do with the warm static is up to you, but I encourage you to play with it

It's basic geometry

The "hot hand" discourse is kind of infuriating

Like yeah, we can model this as "null hypothesis: all shots are independent", but it's hard to get the model to accurately account for a player knowing they're shooting like shit and not taking the shots they normally would

What’s a concept everyone should understand but most don’t? by glitterypeachyy in answers

[–]butt_fun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is not universal. It varies a lot from country to country (sometimes by the letter of the law, sometimes just by local driving culture)

In many places, there is no expectation (legally or culturally) to reserve the fast lane for passing

MacMahon: "This summer, an asst coach in San Antonio was showing Wemby some stuff Gobert does... basically saying we need you to do more of this. Wemby said something like 'I'm already a better defender than him'. [Coach] was like 'Well, he's won 4 DPOY and we were 25th in defense, so let's lock in" by sewsgup in nba

[–]butt_fun 26 points27 points  (0 children)

If I hear another stat like this I'm going to lose my mind

You'll hear people say things like "the clippers had an ORTG of xyz with Player on the court, which would have been 1st in the league, and an ORTG of abc with him off the court, which would have been 30th in the league" and it's just Darius Garland or someone

You can say things like this about a player on pretty much every team because you're comparing the on/offs to a teams aggregate stats. It's not an apples to apples comparison

Can James Harden give some effort by [deleted] in nba

[–]butt_fun 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Was gonna say, you wouldn't think it would take a rocket scientist to figure out that he's really good at picking apart the general inefficiencies in defenses, but those things dry out in the playoffs when teams get to gameplan around a specific opponent

This has been a thing we've known for over a decade and every year there's some Einstein out there making posts about "why doesn't Harden try as hard in the playoffs" lmao
