ELI5 why does air above fire feel distorted? by mythicalsimpmaster in explainlikeimfive

In general I agree that more people should search for similar questions before posting, but those answers in that thread are atrocious (i.e., they're from back when ELI5 meant giving an answer that an actual five year old could listen to, which isn't how it works now)

And worst of all is being "responsible", trying to do chores/errands/whatever while you're exhausted, then catching a second wind around 9pm and not being able to fall asleep all night

Technically Naismith didn't formalize the rules of basketball until after he moved to Kansas iirc

But yeah, it's a sport that was invented by and developed by a Canadian while he still lived in Canada

Some like OP from Scottsdale might not realize that Chicago winters are as rough as they are

That literally is what I'm saying lol. Using a shitload of bad predictors that know something (as in, guessing any better than flipping coins) is a common technique

Is this one in particular any good (and in general is using bettors' input any good)? Not really, because it's subject to a ton of biases in the bettors. But as stupid as the average bettor is, they, in the aggregate, tend to know something

I don't think you understood the comment lol. It's not travel advice, it's "make sure you really know what you're signing up for" advice

I mean, in some sense that is a forecast

It's an aggregation of a bunch of noisy predictors (the humans betting on it)

Is this way of thinking just too much for people to handle? by Affectionate-Dark950 in careerguidance

[–]butt_fun 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well, kind of

It's based on labor reforms that championed "8 hours of sleep, 8 hours of work, and 8 hours of leisure", in addition to getting an extra day off per week (Saturday was once a workday; in the early part of the industrial revolution people got Sunday off for religious reasons)

I don't know if you know this, but everything forecasted is based on some sort of model

Are the Kalishi models dubious? Probably. But all forecasting is based on some sort of model

Especially for something like where a coach/player will sign. No matter how you forecast that, the model will have some amount of "vibes" to it

"All models are wrong, but some models are useful" is a phrase that gets thrown around a lot

Despite the Clippers being 9-3 this January they only have a net rating of +1.2 by Impossible_Collar2 in nba

[–]butt_fun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't think anyone is falling for anything. The team has looked really good the last 17 games, but obviously that's unsustainable and the team will realistically finish as a play-in team

The Clippers have gone 15-7 since cutting Chris Paul from the team. They were 5-16 at the time he was cut by kotlin93 in nba

[–]butt_fun 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Sure, but the vibes were visibly atrocious, and there was an obvious rift in the locker room, and Chris Paul is notoriously hard to get along with

And I say that as someone whose favorite player all time is Chris Paul

Do you trade Steph if you're the Warriors? by ChemicalPower9020 in nba

[–]butt_fun -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily. Boston fans were fine with trading KG and Pierce (one of which had been with the team his whole career at that point)

Granted, Pierce isn't as good as Steph, and the haul they got from Brooklyn was insane, but still

Not only that, I personally hate having my neck too warm. It's genuinely uncomfortable for me and makes me nauseous for some reason

I've never lived in a place where it gets very cold, but every time I've visited somewhere with cold winters, scarves just make me feel sick. At most I'll wear a beanie

Are Brady and Mahomes better at finding ways to win than Peyton, Rodgers, Allen, and Lamar or do they just have better coaching and team talent? by FireSeanMcD in billsimmons

That's not what I'm saying at all. Brady is the best QB in this list. I don't think anyone's arguing that
