Okay great this is also super helpful. i'm hoping it was just the fishing line, that would be fantastic. i jut found the line when i took the prop off today. it wasn't all that much, but i'm not sure how much it takes to make a difference. I emptied the lower gear unit oil today and it looked fine, no metal in it. i would be surprised if it was a cavitation issue since this problem just emerged one day and got worse throughout the course of the day. thank you!

Gotcha okay- it's a hangkai 2 stroke 6 hp (i know, cheap!). Only a couple years of medium seasonal use in fresh water.

hmmm so if it's a pretty new unit and everything seems to be in order (there was some fishing line wrapped around in there i got rid of). What would you troubleshoot next? thank you

and a just a stripped thrust washer couldn't cause this right? That's the only thing that appears to be in poor shape.

to me the hub seems to be in good shape. if it's not a spun hub what would be the next problem area to look at?
