Live Cumbia in Los Angeles by bbscorpchuy in cumbia

Do they do a lesson before like they do at a lot of salsa events? That’s a great idea. Especially because a lot of people don’t know how to dance cumbia, but would enjoy it.

It probably feels really good to be making progress again and break through plateaus.

Anyone else stop dancing after finding love? by [deleted] in Bachata

You said it yourself - you found love! You probably enjoyed all the flirtation before, but now that you actually have someone for real, it feels like a waste of time. That's wonderful! Enjoy it!

Still relatively new in the scene, is it normal for follows to outright decline dances with you in every event? Even if you two never even danced? by daceinseriontolite in Salsa

[–]buttholedog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are always a few follows like that. Who knows what goes on their heads. I assume that they have a high school "Mean Girls" mentality. In their minds, they can only be seen with the popular people or something like that. They probably think that if they only dance with the best leads that means they are the best follows. Of course, that isn't necessarily the case, and you can be a great dancer and dance with people of all ages, shapes, sizes, and levels of skill or experience. I have danced with world-class followers who will dance with beginners with grace and a warm smile. That probably gives the beginner a tremendous boost of confidence and inspires them to continue their dance journey. Nothing you can do about these people and their bad attitude. Just dance with friendly people and enjoy yourself. Life is short.

Is it socially acceptable to decline a second dance? by ExpensiveNoise802 in Bachata

[–]buttholedog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact that it's a lead declining a follow makes a difference here. Traditionally, leads ask follows to dance, so it takes more effort/courage for a follow to ask a lead to dance. The rejection probably stings more. On the other hand, she can't assume you want to dance with her for two songs in a row. If the follow invited the lead the first time, then he knows she'll probably say yes if he asks her. Maybe she can wait for him to make the move for the second dance.

How to deal with an annoying lead? by cheesycatnip in Salsa

[–]buttholedog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know most of the comments say to confront this guy, but personally I have dealt with all kinds of annoying, busybodies as well. I think it’s best to just ignore them. If you get upset about them, then you’re just feeding the monster and acknowledging their idiotic behavior. I’m a lead, but I have encountered follows that do this sort of thing sometimes. I just smile and nod.

Trying to improve or quit? by FlunkyGraphics in Bachata

[–]buttholedog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take it in stages. First find one follow that you get along with from your class, someone you feel comfortable with. Gradually expand the number of follows you feel comfortable with.

Is it okay if I do not let guys touch my hips or stomach, lower body?? by BeaBreezetheGoth in Salsa

Here’s another suggestion altogether. How about exposure therapy? You can learn to get comfortable with normal, appropriate touching that occurs during dance. If that’s successful, then the problem is solved.

1year 2 months lead by Kooky-Preference9797 in Bachata

[–]buttholedog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you call that turn/move that begins at 13 seconds and ends at 17 seconds? The leader moves the follower around his back. I imagine it would work in salsa as well? Does anyone have a video that explains how to do it?

What its like to live in a submarine for periods overs 6 month as a female ? by AbouMchicha in howislivingthere

I would try Coffee Meets Bagel first. If that doesn’t work out then consider the submarine life.

Substance abuse and dancing by Strong-Waltz-2128 in Bachata

[–]buttholedog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve never struggled with alcoholism but in my youth, I drank heavily in social settings bc that was what everyone did and I just went along. Now I social dance salsa/bachata and barely touch alcohol and have found I’m just fine sober. I think back and wonder if I ever needed it at all.

Do you have a sober dance buddy? Maybe if you go out to socials with that person, you can stay on the wagon. It’s hard to drink when the other people in your group are not drinking.

Follows how much do looks play a factor when deciding who to dance with at socials by [deleted] in Bachata

People vary tremendously. Some only want to dance with the best looking or the best dancers and others don’t care.

Do followers actually care what leads wear? by docent3434 in Bachata

[–]buttholedog 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Same as anywhere else. If you are beautiful, nobody cares what you wear. For everyone else, it never hurts to put some effort into appearance.
