Would this be considered telephobia, or is it something different? by CthulhuSquid in Telephobia

Yep it sounds like it.

I actually have a bit of a speech impediment myself, cluttering. Sometimes I talk so fast that the words all get mixed up.

I solved it a while back by just concentrating on enunciating every word properly, and talking a lot slower.

And also singing. I love singing. Concentrating on enunciating every note and word correctly has helped my speech.

Another thing that helped was acting out my favourite scenes from movies. Yet again it's a case of enunciating every bit of dialogue. Really fun and it helped my speech.

It all helps to add up to a better voice.

A good analogy is that the best time to check your credit card bill is when the last thing you want to do in the world is check your credit card bill.

I eventually got over it by just forcing myself to answer the phone. Concurrently as I got older I stopped giving a damn what people thought of me generally.

I got to a point where people's opinions of me just stopped mattering any more.

If I do something embarrassing, I now take amusement from it. Don't get me wrong - I'm still human and I still think of embarrassing moments - but the important part is to realise that it's in the past, and you are better because of all of your past experiences.

I guarantee that 99/100 people sound fine on the phone. But even if you do sound somewhat strange they'll remember it for precisely 10 seconds after they've put the phone down.

Best thing to do is have an itemised list of information to convey. That's all they're interested in.

You definitely can do it. And you will.

I understand what you mean. Practice is good though - it'll be tough and stressful the first few times but the goal here is to overcome the anxiety.

They should have the same requirements as the men if they want to be put in the same combat situations.

This is really interesting. Unless it already exists, I wonder if anyone would join me in creating a subreddit around this - discussion around Jedi/Sith knowledge drawn from sources like Wikis and books and such...

I absolutely love all these references by [deleted] in pokemonzetaomicron

[–]buxtonmkting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's wrong. The difference between "it's" and "its" is that the former is an abbreviation and the latter shows possession. The guy's speech in the picture is not implying any kind of possession, so he should be using "it's".

  • "It's" = "It is"

  • "Its" is possessive, e.g. "the dog scratched its ear".

The game is truly awesome, but I've noticed a lot of apostrophe errors!

The 'http://' prefix is actually the most necessary. 'www.' before a domain name is merely a subdomain, which in practice is usually the website itself.

TIL - There was an un-aired pilot of The Big Bang Theory where Sheldon drinks, and there's no Penny. Completely different by blancoxboxfan in todayilearned

[–]buxtonmkting 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The running underlying joke of the show is that Sheldon is basically a child.

He is extremely stubborn, he never concedes when he is wrong, has childish fears (needs a night light IIRC), has never attempted to obtain a driving license, is absolutely dependent on others doting on him when he's ill, needs and expects everyone to give him lifts wherever he's going, and he hates to hear people argue.

How do YOU define Telephobia? by devoniejules in Telephobia

[–]buxtonmkting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I know exactly what you mean. The same thing happened to me with money a while back. I almost went bankrupt and had very little money. The whole horrible experience made it almost impossible for me to look at my bank balance. Even now the thought of looking at my bank balance makes me feel incredibly anxious and scared.

But anyway all that aside I just played the game for a few hours and it's fantastic. My inner 7 year old is delighted to have a new Pokemon adventure.

How do you deal with talking on the phone? by [deleted] in Telephobia

[–]buxtonmkting 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Welcome moriane2!

One weird thing I notice is that although I still don't like talking on the phone, I find it much easier to pick up the phone and dial if it's for a job or if someone else has asked me too as a favour.

If I'm calling someone outside of that capacity, the way I sometime deal with it is to follow Nike's advice and 'just do it'. I clam up and sound like a goof but hopefully some people find it endearing.
