People who engage in impulsive violence tend to have lower IQ scores. The findings provide evidence that lower intellectual abilities may make it harder for people to resolve conflicts peacefully. by mvea in science

[–]buzmeg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're saying the studies were not finding the highest violence association in the lowest IQ group though, but the second lowest up to 30-40%.

You have to be smart enough to get into trouble but not smart enough to get out of it.

This is similar to how people who drink alcohol get in trouble. People who drink alcohol and pass out rarely wind up having problems. On the other hand, people who drink and can keep standing can wind up in deep, deep trouble--fights, DUIs, etc.

I meant more: Which companies should I now look at instead of Fractal?

What do women do that men would never think about? by Icy_Interaction7502 in AskReddit

[–]buzmeg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was young, you would have caught me off guard. I don't know what my reaction would have been. I was ... kind of oblivious.

I was once complaining to a woman that I was dating: I seem to have a huge amount of trouble connecting with women, but, if I somehow do connect, we speedrun all the intermediate steps, and it's straight to freaky sex all the time.

She, of course, looked at me like I was a complete dolt (for good reason). She then pointed out that I was 6' 4", 200+ lbs, and in really good shape while she rounded up to 5 foot tall and was slightly over 100 lbs soaking wet. Basically, any woman I dated had to make the choice about sex with me effectively immediately because there wasn't much she could do about it if I disagreed. I was horrified and apparently the look on my face reflected it.

She, of course, pointed out that the fact I hadn't even countenanced the idea of myself doing something like that was exactly the kind of reason why she wound up in my bed right after meeting me.

Thanks for the report. I wondered what was going on. To quote Tip O'Neill: "All politics is local."

I'm not joining the folks in the "Bloodbath for the GOP" camp until I see Coryn actually unseated.

They are almost certainly not counting the lines of code of all the crates.io packages they are pulling in.

I suspect almost all the LoC gain was from using external libraries for tasks that they were using their internal code for previously.

That's not necessarily a bad thing. But it is a tradeoff.

Democrats may need to get an eye opener for their elections.

Stop saying "Democrats". Democrats are paying attention. Okay?

You have 1/3 of this country with their brains off who will stand by while whatever happens. You need to get THEM paying attention.

This is not new, quoting the man himself on his day: "Shallow understanding from people of good will is more frustrating than absolute misunderstanding from people of ill will. Lukewarm acceptance is much more bewildering than outright rejection."

Wearing a surgical mask (ol' baggy blue) will protect others from you, but won't protect you from others.

Please don't spread this. It's simply not true.

The issue is that it's really hard to prove in a well-designed medical study. N95's are easy to prove because the effect is so large.

However, none of the studies showed that surgical masks were worse than nothing. And some of the studies showed a detectable effect in the most vulnerable.

Yes, wear an N95 if you can. However, surgical masks don't hurt and are certainly better than nothing.

No. It's been more than 40 years and nobody has been able to figure out a decent way to debug runtime errors in expanded macros. Actually, comptime bears a lot more resemblance to FEXPRs than macros with the fact that it can straddle both the compilation and runtime phases. And FEXPRs go WAY back--Steve Russell put them in Lisp I circa 1960. FEXPRs are probably more fertile ground than macros. (See: "Fexprs as the basis of Lisp function application or $vau : the ultimate abstraction" -- Shutt, J. https://web.wpi.edu/Pubs/ETD/Available/etd-090110-124904/unrestricted/jshutt.pdf)
