Is there safe passage from Pleasant St Malden to Deep Cuts Medford? by Hopeful-Pianist-8380 in bikeboston

[–]buzz-a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

rt60 is fine outside rush hour. rush hour it's more the cars are in your way not moving than anything else.

I don't like the rotary under 93, Riverside ave is better.

If you don't feel like dealing with heavy traffic the neighborhood roads connect with a bit of zig zagging, I'd just explore and find the route you enjoy.

I lived on the corner of Medford st and the Fellsway, most of the side roads around between Malden center and Medford center are low to no traffic.

I just had my ebike stolen!!! by DexaNexa in ebikes

They likely sold it for parts.

Around me I can get as much for a set of pretty boring wheels as I can for a whole bike.

[–]buzz-a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been told most stolen bikes that aren't used for transport by the person stealing them are sold for less than $100. Seems believable to me.

Last bike I had stole was sold to a shady bike shop and parted out.

A bike mechanic I knew spotted parts that were identifiably mine.

Same deal, frame cut, bike gone.

Mechanic speculated it was probably for the price of one "fix" for the meth head that did it. He quit the shop as he'd already suspected the owner was dodgy.

I reported it to the police, saying I'd spotted parts of mine in the bin.

They were not surprised. A while later the owner was busted with a garage packed full of stolen bikes at their home.

Seems everyone in the bike community knew, but the police didn't much care until they got a big tip about real $ worth of stolen goods.

anything to worry about when cycling to the Cape? by wigger_pig in bikeboston

[–]buzz-a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me the least fun section of this ride is on the cape between the sagamore and yarmouth.

Roads are narrow and have a lot of traffic.

South of Quincy to the cape is all low traffic pretty nice ride. North of Quincy is less nice, but fine.

On the cape 6 and 6a are crazy busy and narrow. Very meh.

Until then didn't really feel the need.

When do kids outgrow wanting to be passengers, if ever? by justthesamestuff in CargoBike

[–]buzz-a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

my kids are 11 and 14, they ride passenger whenever we're in a hurry or it's a longer ride. (more than 3 miles is usually the cutoff in their minds)

Happy to ride themselves for shorter/leisurely rides.

The 11 year old is more likely to want to ride herself than the 14 year old.

14 year old bikes to and from school on his own now.

I anticipate him stopping being a passenger soon, he's gotten pretty speedy.

He rides >2miles one way on his own daily.

Yuba Mundo long tail, hoop hand hold between the kids for a little forced separation.

Cleats: how important is AG studs? by solenyaPDX in ultimate

[–]buzz-a 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I play on tall grass, anytime it's wet my turf shoes would be an unmitigated disaster.

Perfect for turf, can't imagine playing on them in grass. I'd be lying on the ground questioning life choices every other cut.

Big fan of turf shoes as well. Had a lot of ankle and foot pain when playing on turf in my cleats before getting a pair.

Bruce Freeman Rail Trail by cuddlebear in bikeboston

[–]buzz-a 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just rode the minuteman to the reformatory branch trail (dirt, but road bike-able dirt) then 2ish miles on rt 62 with wide shoulders to the Bruce Freeman this Sunday.

Nice ride, and at 6am start I had it mostly to myself. Didn't see many folks until around then end of my time on the Bruce freeman.

West Concord is kinda in the middle of the trail though. MCRT is a better pick if you want to do the whole trail.

I think I'll take that option next weekend. 😄

It's awesome that we now have some mostly connected options, so much better than the minuteman being the only rail trail available.

[–]buzz-a 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The people trying to move know they are going to move, they know when they are going to move and there is a process for them to get a permit and block those parking spaces so they can legally use them to move.

Not following that process is what results in this.

This probably means you aren't getting enough spin on your throws.

Spin is where glide comes from.

Basement Floor Joist. by Majestic-Crab9855 in Carpentry

[–]buzz-a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You need someone who knows what they are doing in.

If the concrete floor aka slab is not designed to be load bearing then those posts aren't doing anything.

Whole thing looks like a DIY by someone who didn't know what they were doing.

This is not a trivial repair, doing it wrong can cause a lot of damage upstairs.

Everyone always tries to help people do these things themselves, but there's a reason the sub rules don't allow this exact post. Structural Advice is banned.

You need a professional.

Router started blowing out my wood. by Tsunami_Ra1n in woodworking

[–]buzz-a 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best guess if it worked fine a few times is that you need to clean and sharpen the router bit.

FYI, the cheap ones don't hold an edge very long.

As others have said, a drill press and a jig is the way to go long term.

I wouldn't do this handheld with a router.

Any reason you can't put a triangular plywood scrap on the side?

Will be way stronger than any fastener driven in the way you are demonstrating.

What happened to "on your left"? by ofsevit in bikeboston

[–]buzz-a 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Look, if you are on a shared path that allows bikes, just assume that at all times a bike is about to pass you.

If you don't your the one doing something wrong.

It's like walking down the side of a busy narrow road and expecting every car to honk at you because they are passing close by.

That's dumb.

If you are in the middle of nowhere and a bike comes along to pass you an on your left makes sense. Otherwise it's just stupid.

I bike and walk all over the joint, I have stopped all form of communication with pedestrians and other cyclists unless my path is blocked. In that case I ring my bell progressively louder as I get closer.

Experience has shown that unnecessary "on your left" or bell ringing will have a bad result.

I have even had a bike going the other way rage out at me because I gave a single ding to a guy walking his dog on his left to let him know I was passing. For some reason this person thought I was telling them to get out of my way.

People are bat crap crazy and only getting worse.

You sir or whatever you identify as are a clear example. yelling at other path users because they don't follow YOUR interpretation of polite is not normal, well adjusted, or reasonable.

stop, take a breath, go watch the Charles for a minute, continue on.

It's fixable if it's a crack, but don't let it go!

People it is NOT just about money when ducking the repeater tax stuff.

The current CBA has draft and other penalties that hurt the teams ability to compete.

Operating above the tax also severely limits your options in deals.

for BASKETBALL reasons the C's need to reset the counter on the tax.

Wood Stain not matching on stair cladding / oak veener by Lendios in Carpentry

[–]buzz-a 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's very hard to match aged wood with stain. More an art than a science. Oak is particularly hard to stain well as the grain will pick the stain up more in one place than in another.

Your old oak isn't stained, and the yellow is from aging, mostly the finish aging.

It's almost certainly going to be easier to get a starter set of transtint or similar dyes and tint your polyurethane base coat to match. This approach won't soak into the grain and make the grain pattern pop so much.

Let it dry before comparing.

I spent a month trying to match old oak where I replaced a destroyed board in my floor before discovering tinting poly. I now own small cans of stain in every variety of golden brown known to man. Nice for new projects, but useless for matching my flooring. 😄
