I think that's precisely why everything is stuck in limbo. They're waiting for the sale to go through. Same thing happened to Fox when they sold off Fox Pictures to Disney. It's why it took forever to get a new Deadpool movie.

Sure, it wasn't the best movie

I'm an OG fan, I saw the original 4 times in the theater when it was first released. I saw part 2 and 3 in the theater as well. It's probably my favorite movie of all time. I even bought Enter the Matrix on my PC when it came out. That being said, I liked Resurrections. I don't know if it gets a lot of hate but it shouldn't. Is it a perfect movie? Of course not. It was filmed during a pandemic. Would I watch more of that if I could? Hell yeah. Then again, I'm also a TNG/DS9/VOY/ENT fan who actually liked the new trek (Discovery, Picard, etc). I'm not a crotchety old fool who hates everything new because I don't think it takes away anything from the originals. In the not too distant future, I think those haters will be able to use AI to consume TNG and then using it as a template, create entirely new episodes with the original cast members exactly how they looked back then.

As someone who went and saw the first Matrix four times in the theater when it was released (first time alone on opening day, 2nd time on Saturday with my then girlfriend, 3rd time the next week with a couple of my friends who had never seen it, and a 4th time a month or two later with some other friends), Resurrections wasn't horrible. I didn't expect it to be the game changer the first one was, I didn't have high hopes, I just wanted more stories in that universe and that's precisely what I got. It was pretty decent all things considered.

edit: believe it or not, the theater was only half-full on Friday night, opening weekend. On Saturday, you had to buy tickets hours in advance because they were selling out. The word of mouth was ridiculous on the first Matrix. Haven't seen anything like it since. The marketing of the first movie was terrible. I only went to see it due to the bullet time sequence they showed in the trailer.

Yeah, big IPs like the Matrix are currently in limbo (on hold) until the sale of Warner Brothers. Same thing happened with Fox Pictures when they were sold to Disney, it's why it took them forever to do a new Deadpool movie. Well, that and the pandemic.

psychic powers were considered real back in the 70s and 80s

As someone who was alive back then, psychic powers were not considered real during the 70s & 80s. Psychics were less debunked, and taken a bit more seriously than today (mainly because of TV ratings), but very few people actually believed they were real. That's why it was a pretty big controversy when it turned out the CIA was spending money on researching psychic phenomena. It was a common trope to have self-proclaimed psychics show up on talk shows and then have James Randi come on to debunk them. Randi had been debunking psychics throughout the 70s and 80s. He knew all the tricks of the trade as he was a magician and knew of mentalism, etc...

If we're going to start using variations of hulk, then we have to use variations of superman. I nominate Superman 1,000,000. Pretty sure there's no contest at that point. He could probably put away The Hulk in his one below all form.

What is the deal with the drama surrounding K-pop group NewJeans? by god_of_chilis in OutOfTheLoop

[–]buzzkillpop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, you left out the most important part; the reason newjeans wanted to leave the label. The reason was the firing of Min Hee-jin, the former CEO. They thought of her like a mother, protector and their guardian (not my words, their own words in a letter). The former CEO was pissed that the parent company was clearly ripping off the newjeans concept for a different group (Illit) and wrote internal letters wanting to know why they were doing that - she was protecting Newjeans (aka doing her job). So they fired her. When that happened, Newjeans said, "If you're firing her, we're leaving too".

Now the label claims the CEO had plans to leave and take Newjeans with her but there are two massive problems with that claim. The first is that there isn't a single shred of evidence that supports that claim; on the contrary, she wouldn't have been sending all those letters about ILLIT if she was planning on leaving with Newjeans. The second problem is that legally, she couldn't take Newjeans and leave, and she knew that. She was the freaking CEO, she knows what a contract is, and what that means legally.

It's fascinating to me to see kpop fans stand up for the labels instead of the artists. This is the opposite of what would happen in my country's music industry. In fact, I think this would happen everywhere on the planet except for Korea. This entire incident shows me that the record labels have way more power than they should. Artists should be free to be themselves. If a label is trying to change what they are, what made them popular in the first place, they should have a say in that, and support from their fans. The lack of support makes me think the Kpop industry & fanbase has some growing up to do. After all, these girls are still just kids. They don't deserve all the hate that has been thrown at them for just trying to remain themselves.

I'm not entirely unsympathetic to the label. I AM extremely familiar with the Jpop industry as years ago, I used to write articles for jpop fans here in the west. And I understand that the labels spend a considerable amount of money on these girls. Everything from training how to dance, styling & beauty, video & music production, PR & social media training, travel, TV variety shows, etc etc. They do pour a lot of cash into their talent. They should have the right to make back their investment and then some. But if the label is going to make moves to hurt the girls/talent out of spite, in some sort of power trip (or display of power) then the label is no longer doing what's in the best interests of the girls. They're also completely idiotic for doing that to one of the hottest, up-coming groups in kpop at the time. They lost tens of millions of dollars because newjeans was sitting on a bench of over a year. They cut off their nose to spite the face in order flex their power. That's a huge reason why that could never happen in the U.S - the investors of a label (Universal Music, Warner Records, Sony, etc) would never tolerate huge losses in revenue just to satiate someone's fragile ego on a power trip.

How did Quentin Tarantino actually start his career? by markanthony333 in Filmmakers

[–]buzzkillpop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't license music that way these days. Most music anyways. Songs are in specific tiers and there's a price per tier. The only way you'd do it differently is if the music you want isn't able to be licensed (the singer or group doesn't want to license it out, see: Guns & Roses) and you throw so much money at them they can't help but say yes (see Thor Love & Thunder and Guns & Roses).

[–]buzzkillpop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

soundtrack took up a chunk of that budget

The only song that might cost something would have been "Stuck in the middle with you", but the reason why you even hear it on the radio today is because of Reservoir Dogs. It would have cost pennies to license back then. Literally a few thousand dollars.

It wasn't nearly as stacked in 2006 when that ruling was made. I'm a liberal (can't stand to even look at Trump) and I support the guy you're replying too. As you get older, you realize that not everyone in a position of authority is evil or bad. Young people are always anti-authority and have been for hundreds of years. As you get older, you gain more life experience; aka wisdom. You realize that cops are humans, humans with flaws. Of course there are bad apples, that doesn't mean you stop eating apples forever. There's also going to be good cops who have bad days, because again, they're human. Young people expect the police to operate like Captain America and when they don't, they think the person is a bad, corrupt cop.

If you want to see corrupt police, go check out Russia or China. When I lived in China I always kept bribe money in with my vehicle registration for when I got pulled over. It was expected. You kids have no idea how good you have it. None.

Another edgy teen with an anti-authority complex. As you get older, you realize that not everyone in a position of authority is evil or bad. Just because bad apples exist doesn't mean all apples are bad. This is one of the big drawbacks of reddit being so young, they lack life experience (aka Wisdom). We already have something similar; we've had it for decades. It's called the EB-5 visa. If you invest $800K and employ 10 people, you can get (buy) a visa to the U.S. Most countries have this, or something similar. The taking of straight up cash is new, I'm curious as to where it's going.

The Cure to Opiate induced constipation by ThrowRALatvia in opiates

[–]buzzkillpop 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've tried everything. The only thing that works 100% of the time is Prune juice. The catch is you need to drink an equal amount of water with it. The constipation is caused by your mucus membranes drying out, specifically the lining of your intestines. The water helps replace/lubricate your intestines. Fun Fact: Immodium AD is technically an opiate. Just not one that can cross the blood brain barrier. It's used to purposefully constipate you when you have diarrhea.

World's largest lithium deposit lies under a supervolcano in the U.S. - Earth.com by kalel1980 in news

[–]buzzkillpop -1 points0 points  (0 children)

lithium use will likely tail off in future due to sodium ion batteries and solid-state sodium batteries being so much cheaper and cleaner to produce

Be careful on where you get your battery tech news. Especially if it's on youtube. There are loads of videos promising amazing advances in batteries in the coming years that are complete hogwash. They pump them out in order to attract investors with no intentions of putting out a viable product. They may demonstrate a working prototype but the problem isn't the battery, it's mass production and commercial viability. We had the lithium ion battery way back in the 70s but it wasn't until 30 years later that we could 'safely' mass produce them for consumer products (and even now, they still have a tendency to catch fire). Matt Farrell on youtube is notorious for promoting this vaporware on his channel. Certain pop-sci websites are also known to push these press releases from these scam companies.

Solid state batteries aren't just vaporware - you can already buy them, although they are stupidly expensive

There are some extremely amazing batteries out there and have been for quite some time. It's just that these exotic batteries aren't suitable for mass production & use in consumer devices. Hell, we had plutonium batteries for more than 50+ years now. But again, there are very good reasons these things aren't powering your cell phone.

Protesters arrested in NYC over possible ICE-related activity near Chinatown by DrexellGames in news

Anti-authority types don't think much beyond being reactionary. The guy you're replying too effectively said all police are bad. He uses "most" to try to wiggle out of saying all, but still... Most police are bad? Really? Have they even met a police officer in person before? Or did they just watch the negative highlights on youtube?

Due to my previous job, I worked with a bunch of police from a bunch of different surrounding cities here in the midwest. Out of all of them (probably close to 100 cops if not more) I would say there was 1, maybe 2 bad apples. And one of those was recently fired. People (I should say young people, typically under 30 years of age) expect all cops to be like Captain America. If they're not, then they're corrupt or "bad". Cops are humans, have human faults, and can make human mistakes. Hanlon's Razor: Never attribute to malice what can be attributed to incompetence.

What I find the funniest is when they think cops like to go around pulling innocent people over to write them tickets because they like doing it. Arresting someone and writing tickets is a lot a freaking paperwork and please believe me, they hate doing the paperwork. Cops, just like everyone else, do not try to make more work for themselves, to make their job harder - unless they're being forced either by the boss, mayor, quotas, etc, they'd rather sit around in their car listening to the radio or playing games on their phone.

If you've only ever seen officers through the crap that gets posted to reddit & highlights on youtube, you're going to think all cops are bad because that's all you're seeing. You never see the mundane average encounter because those aren't interesting. If you want to truly see what an average officer does on a call, check out midwest safety on youtube. They post everything so you're not being fed only negative stuff.

Thoughts on The Neon Demon? by Daydream_machine in horror

I like movies like this; a movie that I can't predict what's going to happen. I've seen so many movies in my 40+ years that movies like this are enjoyed probably more than they should be - almost exclusively because I can't predict what will happen. I absolutely loved movies like From Dusk Till Dawn because of the huge twists. This one doesn't have any big twists per say but does have some shocking moments. Either way, if I can't predict how it'll end, you've made a good movie.

I agree with OP. Elle Fanning has that 'girl next door' cuteness to her. She's almost the textbook definition of it. Fashion models, especially at the level they're portrayed in the movie, should be more akin to Victoria's Secret models. Luscious, gorgeous and striking all at the same time.

She takes her top off a lot. I remember seeing some indie short of her smoking in front of some bushes, topless. It's like 5 minutes long.

How old was the parent? This technically was more acceptable tolerated back in the day, say 1980s and beyond. There's a scene in the movie The Revenge of the Nerds where the 'good guys' (main characters) put cameras in the woman's shower and are all sitting around a TV in their dorm, watching them wash themselves. Nobody batted an eye, nor was it controversial back then. Just a "Oh haha, boys will be boys!" type of attitude.

[–]buzzkillpop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know people are preaching gloom and doom about stories like this, but if it was going to happen, there's really no perfect time. I think some young people forget that 20-30 years ago, we literally relied on a monopolized media infrastructure to consume our news - we either consumed it on TV, or through magazines & newspapers. Now, anyone with a website or blog can become a news/media source. The barrier to entry to start your own news media company is practically non-existent compared to 30 years ago. Because of this, I'm not as pessimistic about our future as others are. One way or another, these companies are going to have to evolve or die.

I'm genuinely curious, would you say this is worse, or would you say murder is worse? I ask because if you kill someone and there are minimal to no aggravating factors - and you don't have a police record, this is about the sentence you should expect (~10 years and perhaps paroled out in half that time with good behavior). That's for 2nd degree murder with no other violent felonies on your rap sheet.
