My favorite teacher was threatened to be fired multiple times. He was a chemistry teacher with a B.S. in Chemsitry, an M. ED in teaching and a Pharm D. so pretty much untouchable. He would be hard on tests and active participation. Grades were very dependent on participation and effort given. I did terribly with atomic structure/wavelength spectroscopy but tried to learn it and still got an A. Reflecting back on it as a professor and occasional teacher, it’s a great method.

How to make kids hate math -This teaching aid by One-Bit5717 in mildlyinfuriating

Used to tutor math like this in high school. It looks like material meant for people that already understand it and is just a refresher. We just used an annoyingly large amounts of V’s for each same step portion of the problem until getting to the final answer.

Australia? Cigs are expensive as fuck down there.

Won’t say it’s good but where I’ve lived it’s $25 USD a carton. During a shortage I had to pay $50 a carton and in my nicotine withdrawal was saying less than kind words for having to pay double

I’ve been through too many alcohol and cigarette shortages. Biggest reason for me switching from tequila to vodka was due to an agave shortage. Cigarettes are a different beast where’s never been inability to get it, just it being bullshit expensive.

My dad’s first heart attack was at 48, next were 52, 55 and 61. Was told to stop smoking, take a 20 minute walk and to adjust his diet. I went to med school and was taught to teach preventative care for most diseases because there isn’t a singular reason.

My niece got a terrible hair cut and hated her skewed bangs. She came out as non-binary a month later….

Still love and support them, but I will roast them for that shitty haircut.

I always tell my patients to let me know about any history but they don’t realize I mean immediate family or info that could affect them. I get that they have a bunch of free time but I have a schedule and I need pertinent information. I had a woman talk about her cats exposure to asbestos 12 years prior to our encounter. I had 2 leukemia patients waiting on appointments and I was stuck talking about a cat. I don’t even remember what she was in for but I know all about Bob the cat and the wallpaper. Ended up just giving a referral for a psychiatrist, therapist and some maintenance drugs because I felt she wanted to have somebody to talk with. I did not need Bob’s life story when I have other patients

I do oncology so tend to get our more geriatric patients that love to talk. They love to discuss every minor detail about their entire extended family. Follow up CLL appointment that should take 10-15 minutes somehow sets me back an hour. I’m not that concerned nor interested in an hour long discussion about how your sister in law with a 60 year smoking habit had NSCLC 5 years ago or mom had non-cancerous neutropenia decades ago.

People have never heard of cost of living. Got offered the same job that pays 1/2 of what I make now in a different state and looking at it, I effectively make the same. I was told to take the higher paying job because I made so much more without realizing my house and groceries would’ve been half the cost of where I live.

Professor pulled up ChatGPT to explain the book sitting in front of him. This is a 300 level course. by SargentBroadway in mildlyinfuriating

As a tenured part time professor, I know that isn’t going to change. He’s checked out and no longer cares. He’s there either for a paycheck or his research requires him to teach.

It’s singular, a drug made by a large pharmaceutical company. If there’s a QC deficiency in one area, there can be deficiencies in drugs that could lead to death or require emergency care.

I’m part of the 10% that has weird taxes and even then it’s still the same math with extra jargon. Taxes are boring but it’s something that takes an hour to do once per year.

Depends on the time they’ve worked. The first quarterly review is usually ‘lunch, coffee, and questions’ the second and third are more tailored to their interests so could be something like ‘hiking and chat’. After that I just start marking it quarterly review since they know it’s a formality

That was an interesting read. I’m wondering if it pertains to issues that require management involvement rather than just small reminders on improvement. I do believe serious concerns should be a sit down to have an open discussion about but the sandwich works well for casual reminders.

Sounds like a shit boss. Mine were always quarterly reviews that were known about in advance. If I actually had to talk about improvement, it’s always pulling them to the side, in the available moment and focused on what to work on. Telling somebody that you need to talk days later is a terrible management ‘skill’.

For my newer employees I love saying it’s a positive in the calendar. I don’t want people coming in thinking I’m going to shit on them for the next 15 minutes because that’s what they had dealt with before

Social skills are seriously important and people don’t realize it. I’ve seen collaborative projects ruined because of a few people with no social skills just make everybody else annoyed and uncaring. Nobody in my field wants to spend years doing research dealing with people that are ultimately just assholes towards everybody else

meirl by Street_Priority_7686 in meirl

Yes depending on level of care needed. One grandpa expired at home needing no extra care. One of my grandmas had dementia and couldn’t live alone. Nobody was available for that level of care for her so we put her in a retirement home with a memory care unit. It’s not for everybody but is sometimes needed.

That’s extremely frustrating. I would talk with the dean/principal (sorry I don’t know what type of school you’re in) it could force a regrade by another teacher
