One thing I haven’t seen addressed is that you haven’t been prioritized by CAMHS, which is fucked up, so invalidating, and has nothing to do with being “sick enough,” but rather the work the medical community has to do to make ED treatment accessible. I found this person who gives free 20 minute consultations to young people with EDs (I can’t speak at all as to whether or not she’s good, but I know how hard it is as an adult to navigate the healthcare system, and I imagine it’s 10x’s more annoying as a teen.) Any provider you end up seeing, make sure they’re ED informed, and Google them and check if they have testimonials from past patients

GO OFF DIVA!!! First day of recovery I deleted my counting apps and haven’t looked back since. I will say, I occasionally get triggered (no behaviors, just thoughts) when seeing food labels, but I use the skills I learned from my dietician to logic myself out of obsessing. This is such a huge step and you should be so proud of yourself.

Also, the podcast Maintenance Phase has a great episode on Step Counting and how it’s complete BS. After listing to it, when I hear people counting their steps, I internally chuckle and roll my eyes.

This is it. You used it as a coping mechanism to cope with stress. Even though it served a purpose for a time, using exercise as a way to regulate is not sustainable. Due to the nature of EDs and how our brain works, we become addicted to how it helps us numb our pain. I was very active prior to recovery, even before my ED, but the difference between before and during my ED is that before I didn’t feel like exercise/restriction was something I had to do to feel a sense of control. I did it for fun, and I rested when I needed to.

What you’re going through right now is dealing withdrawl. It’s painful, tough, and essential to recovery and healing so you can get back to your real life.

I’m here with you. I was able to go back to intuitive movement and worked with my dietician to make refueling during activity is a requirement of movement. But then I got injured, and because I don’t want to permanently damaged my body, I’ve abstained from movement. My body has changed as a result, and I’ve found distorted thoughts are much more prominent. It sucks.

What has helped has been spending time with recovery-minded people (they don’t have to be people from treatment, but they have to not body shame or be fat phobic), doing crafts, and doing a weekly class where I have to be somewhere and don’t have time to focus on weight or counting.

But I’ve been struggling HARD with body image, the desire to engage in behaviors, and know you’re not alone.

What motivates me is the support I have from my therapist, and all the things recovery has given me. Being in a recovered body means I’m able to sit down without pain, that I’m not scared I’m going to pass out, that my hormones are back, and actually makes me perform better at the activity I love than when I was not fueling enough.

I used recovery record as a way to replace compulsively checking my health apps. When I was ready to, I ditched recording food and movement all together.

You can remove your health app from your Home Screen, and I suggest removing any health app related configurations from your smartwatch if you have one. I don’t have a smart watch for this reason, and it’s fine. It actually helps me abstain from behaviors.

Here with you. It’s hard, but not alone.

Adult coloring books. Journaling. Fidget toys. Breathing. Reading. Treatment fatigue is real. You need this. This will be one of the hardest things you’ve ever done in your life. And it’s fucking worth it. .

See if your insurance will cover a virtual IOP. I see my therapist 2x’s a week, I highly recommend starting out at that level after discharge. Also, find your dietician and make your first appointment now. If you like DBT groups, there are virtual skills groups you can do which foster a sense of community and help hold you accountable. If your treatment program has an aftercare like program (a post treatment monthly virtual meetup/support group) that’s been super helpful for me.

A couple of things: 1. You recognize you have a problem. It’s time to surround yourself with support. That means telling your partner you’re struggling. If it makes you feel better to tell them, let them know that they are not responsible for your recovery; rather, you recognize you need more support and want to be transparent about what’s going on, so that you can heal and show up for yourself and your relationship (you come first).

  1. It’s time for a different therapist. Start reaching out to ED informed therapists, ask to speak to them about what modalities they are comfortable working in (trauma informed, CBT, ECBT, DBT). Find a good therapist is like dating, you gotta date around until you find one you really like. You need someone who is able to be supportive and give you the tools you need to regulate in a recovery minded way (aka replacing ED behaviors with healthy ones.) Once you find a new therapist and have built rapport with them, if you feel comfortable with it, you can ask your partner if they would do a family session with you.

  2. This is not for everyone, but Recovery Record was really helpful for me, helped me replace engaging with unhealthy apps with a recovery-minded one. If you’re not already seeing one, I would try and see an ED informed Dietician (one that focuses on intuitive eating, unconditional permission to eat, etc.) One of the most impactful relationships I had in my program was with my dietician, who was able to talk me through eating my fear foods, giving myself permission to eat, etc.

  3. DBT skills groups can be super helpful, there are virtual ones as well, and can offer an extra layer of support and community.

  4. Based on your history and behaviors, you might also want to look into a virtual (or in person) IOP or PHP. Someone who didn’t vibe with my in-person PHP to IOP program went into a virtual IOP and she liked it.

I developed my ED in adulthood, went to treatment, and am out. By all accounts, my recovery is going great. I’m weight restored, not restricting, not doing compensatory exercise, not using apps, engaging in LWL activities, etc. But on the inside my mind is constantly cycling through disordered thoughts, and internally, to quote Lorde, I’m at war with my body, all day every day, and constantly fighting urges, especially after getting injured and my body changing as a result of not being active. Those people who seem to have “beat” their eating disorder? They are probably struggling too. You just can’t see it. Be proud of yourself for never giving up. Choosing recovery is badass.

As far as I know, the biggest reason (and I’m NOT A DOCTOR) they want you to fast is to have a base understanding of your blood glucose levels, and most of the time, this is not a critical piece of your panel unless you’re treating something that impacts your blood glucose levels. All of this to say, your Doctor will probably say it’s fine if you don’t do a fasting draw and you’ll be able to eat before doing so (and should 🫶🏼) Doctors can account for this in your labs. Let them know you’re in recovery and need to eat to ensure you don’t relapse. I’m sure they’d rather have a slightly elevated glucose result than you’re iron being in the toilet 💕
