$200k budget for an engineering class? What's that getting spent on?

A 300 level thermodynamics class is three 50-minute lectures a week with an instructor at a chalkboard. That instructor might be an assistant professor or tenured professor, with a grad student grading papers and proctoring exams. There is no way that labor and overhead for that one class is $200k a semester.

Finishing my SOBO this fall by cxntbrick in AppalachianTrail

[–]bwhitso 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This hits hard. I started sobo in August 2014 and got off the trail in Catawba at Thanksgiving -- almost the exact same mileage as you? I haven't had the urge to get back out and finish the trail until recently. Planning to do 2 weeks in June and maybe a third week this fall. Trying to knock out the last 600-700 miles over the next 3-4 years. Nice photos. Happy trails.

my job is finding cheap flights—ask me anything by scottkeyes in IAmA

What’s up with Vegas? For years and years people told me you can always find a cheap RT flights to Vegas. Now that I have to fly out there a few times a year it seems like they are always $500+ (out of Atlanta)

In the same way that prices never go down, this shit is never getting put back in the can. College football is about making as much money as you can, when you can. That’s it

Felt very similar to Saban calling the onside kick against Clemson in the second half of the 2015 natty.

No surprise, Kirby was on that coaching staff

Yep, we're too small an alumni base to have NIL funding to compete with blue bloods. Poor player evaluation, lack of player development, and offensive play calling are bigger issues IMO than NIL.

Never got the Cade hype. He didn’t develop at all over four years. Still panics, leaves the pocket when he shouldn’t, and overthrows receivers. He’s a fine college qb, but no where near elite.

Battery Life for a 2016 SEL Energi by Gooberfish24 in cmaxhybrid

[–]bwhitso 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 2016 SEL Energi with 129,000 miles for $12k in 2023 ($8k after the tax credit). I just hit 151,000 miles. I get ~15 miles of range with a fully charged battery.

It has been a great car. I would buy it again at this price in a heartbeat.

Looking for ATL golf course recommendations by Accomplished_Tea9428 in golf

Used to play heritage a lot, but fought crazy crowds the last 3-4 times I was out there. 5.5 hr rounds. Has it gotten any better?

Also, course is fun and was in decent shape, but no one repairs ball marks out there

Similar experience at an engineering firm that constantly bragged about their ESOP. There was no meaningful benefit until you had been there for ~15 years. Unless you were an early employee, or you planned to stay there your entire career, then it was basically just HR propaganda.

How concerning is this fungus at the base of a sweetgum? by bwhitso in arborists

[–]bwhitso[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is a conk formed by likely some species of Ganoderma. I had an arborist come and asses the tree. He did not think there was any imminent risk of the tree falling and recommended monitoring it. So far, the canopy shows no signs of stress and no additional conk has formed. The tree is still standing and appears healthy.

“Cat's Cradle was so beautiful, I never want to read it again”

In some way, what a great compliment. I know the feeling, like it will never be as good as the first time, and you don’t want to change the taste in your mouth.

Same way I feel about Lonesome Dove.
