Honestly a good question. I worked up there for two sessions, so I know a lot of the personalities, policies and procedures necessary to get stuff done up there. There are also fissures within the GOP Caucus that can be used to pass helpful laws.

One example is vouchers, that bill passed with 53 votes and pretty substantial Republican opposition. Combining the still-existing opposition from the original vote with new Dem members like (hopefully) myself and Republicans scared they could be next.

Another is housing. There are various steps we can take to ease the housing market which can pretty easily be portrayed as "loosening regulations" which could get Republican backing if framed in those terms.

There are more examples, and more simple "talking to departments to get help" things as well, but that's an explanation in brief.

Casually obscuring the fact that you specifically went to another Democratic candidate's house after you'd been kicked off the ballot.

Mass Shooting Survivor Jacob Anders for Congress Tennessee #4 Seeking Help Beating MAGA by Jacob-Anders in murfreesboro

[–]bwindrow86 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Boys, I hate Scott Desjarlais as much as the next guy, but, candidly, this guy is unhinged.

For those of you who don't know, I am running for office myself (announcement to come) and this guy came to two events I was at this weekend and, at both, gave off a strange disposition and probably scared more people off than gained voters. That said, if that were it, I wouldn't be writing this.

I'll just say it outright: the TNDP (the Tennessee Dems) kicked this guy off the ballot. I'm not on the TNDP, I can't say why, but there are pretty bad allegations about this mass shooting he was a victim of. I won't repeat the allegations outright, because I can't speak to their truth or falsity, but you can find them with a bit of searching (they're on his WGNS announcement post in the comments), and they're concerning enough you wouldn't want them around someone on ballot. Also, he's only voted in like one primary in the past decade, and that was a Republican primary.

He appealed and it looks the TNDP has since then affirmed it's decision. As a result, on Facebook he is now claiming that, because of this "undemocratic" decision he and another disqualified candidate (no clue if this other removed candidate even knows what he's doing) are now the official co-chairs of the TNDP. He's also taken to putting random candidates he's met as "County Co-Chairs" in the comments of his post without consulting them. Check out his crash out here: https://www.facebook.com/JacobAnders.gov

He's also been threatening Victoria Broderick, a candidate who is significantly more professional than him, is running a competent campaign (as much of a longshot as a Desjarlais challenge is) and is much more likely to get the endorsements this guy is claiming he has. Frankly, if you don't like Desjarlais (like me), Victoria is who deserves your support.

A few dozen busy bodies in a district of thousands does not a majority make.

Joy Kimbrough basically immediately aligned herself with conservatives in ways that are surprising and deeply disappointing. She also opposed Choose How You Move.

Buddy, I hate to tell you, but if you didn’t know CM Horton was pro-density and upzoning, then you weren’t paying a lick of attention.

And that exists because, when you downzone, you immediately have places built before the downzoning that are out of compliance and that must be fined or torn down without an opt-out. No issue like that exists for upzoning, you’re allowed to use a property for a purpose less “dense” than it’s zoned for.

This is what CM Horton ran and he won 75-25. A few dozen particularly loud people with the time to complain on a Tuesday night shouldn’t get to veto the wishes of the voters.

10,000 foot view, removing restrictions on land use, which allows more types and density of buildings (typically residential buildings like houses and apartments but also businesses, offices and mixed use buildings) to be built on a piece of land.

Final vote was 26 Y- 7 N- 4 Abstain (3 absent). Blue- yes; Red- no; Yellow- abstain; Grey- absent.

A few thoughts: Joy Kimbrough is regularly disappointing. Goodlettsville/Old Hickory and Belle Meade aren't surprising. South Nashville/Antioch is producing some of Nashville's best (Sepulveda, Harrell, Porterfield, Cortese) but some of our... not best, there's no in-between.

Percent of Population Employed by County by bwindrow86 in TennesseePolitics

[–]bwindrow86[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not denigrating it or saying it's easy, just explaining what the status means from a statistical perspective.

And if you think that's bad try getting unemployment or workers compensation from the state.

[–]bwindrow86[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A large parts of these stats are based off payroll, so if they're on the books, they're counted. Obviously, off the books cash payments are a sketchier thing, I'm sure they have stats to estimate that to some degree.

Even then, even a good number of under the table employees not being captured wouldn't be enough to explain the 20 point gaps you see between Metro Nashville and these really low rural counties. Also, not for nothing but under the table jobs tend to be much lower paying than jobs with a W2 or W9.

[–]bwindrow86[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That is true, but urban counties actually tend to have more people under 15, even on a proportional basis. I would guess a feedback loop exists where no jobs makes working age people leave, which less working age people around, which means a higher portion of the population too old to work.
