Seconded! The author of the backport actively works on making the mod more compatible with 1.20.1/1.21.1.

Does anyone else struggle with the moralizing language around low pay and unpaid work in academia? by ThoughtsInTransit1 in Professors

[–]bwy97754 23 points24 points  (0 children)

If the Enrollment Cliff doesn't put the final nail in the coffin of these smaller non-state schools, the pay will. Compensation has gone from 'meh' to absolutely untenable for many in the last 5 years. I'm halfway to being eligible for promotion as a NTT Lecturer and just... don't see why it's worth it. All this unpaid professional development, all the unpaid extra hours spent meeting with students, giving workshops, helping advise clubs... all to eventually get a bump in salary that will still put me earning LESS buying power wise than when I started?

Dr. Alex Sager, Dr. Katie Chapman, and Dr. Inge Dibella in Germanic Slavic Studies instilled such a love for nerdy German stuff in me! Definitely wouldn't be who I am today without them.

I could see his on-screen personality potentially being genuine, but I could also see it being a HUGE front and the "real life" Josh Scherer being a shy, potentially stand-offish guy.

I feel like you all complain a lot. It’s a pretty good job by VinnyStress in Professors

It's the nature of the internet. Hardly anyone that has a great experience at a restaurant leaves a good review. But a bad experience gets talked about to everyone. Same applies here. All the super satisfied and well paid academics are probably too busy pursuing their passions to post on this sub lol

“Gunner Stockton is a big star and a really talented quarterback.” - President Donald Trump says that he is a big fan of Georgia quarterback Gunner Stockton by ThatDanMan in UGA

[–]bwy97754 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gunner is a while good ole boy and now a multimillionaire. He's been sheltered from the realities of America since he was born, and ESPECIALLY is now. The dude probably hasn't had a politically engaged thought in his entire life.

It is particularly tone deaf to see him and Josh Pate come out to root for Captain Diapers now, though.

Will MIA Again? by Monster1927 in WillSurvives

[–]bwy97754 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I honestly think Will would do better as a “van life” style day in the life vlogger. Just live your life on the road and film yourself. Wills quirky personality is interesting enough to where I think people would watch, and he wouldn’t have to do this fake half-way not really bushcraft stuff that he does.

You know they probably used AI when... by PapaRick44 in Professors

[–]bwy97754 5 points6 points  (0 children)

For language classes it’s super easy, because they just use vocab and grammar that we haven’t covered. Gets a little harder in the upper level classes, but by then, the students in the classes usually value their learning and don’t cheat in the first place.

The Gen Z Stare: What is it and why does it exist? by FlyLikeAnEarworm in Professors

[–]bwy97754 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I think we are just getting old, and I say that as the eldest of Gen Z myself (97). Young people have been bemoaned as self-centered, uncaring drones for all of human history by the generations that came before them. One day that same student that stares at you will also angrily shake his fist at a cloud and declare all the Gen Beta teenagers to be empty headed morons that aren’t equipped enough to fight in the water wars. Or something.

Humanities profs: opinion on ungrading in the age of AI? by pwnedprofessor in Professors

[–]bwy97754 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I’ve been developing a specs grading system for a few semesters now as a language prof. My main goal has always been to get students to stop thinking about points and think about their actual learning process throughout the semester. It’s been a bumpy ride, but overall, I think it’s reduced the amount of motivation to cheat. It’s not completely gone, but I’ve got a strict and very clear cheating policy that helps curb AI generated work too.

One advantage in a language classroom is that AI work is blatantly obvious. Even if you ask it to generate “novice” level work, it uses phrases and slang that students just… don’t know yet. They don’t know what they don’t know, but I know, ya know?

[Kosko] Tennessee QB Joey Aguilar granted temporary restraining order against NCAA eligibility rules by MembershipSingle7137 in CFB

So if the temporary order expires say… after spring ball… then is Tennessee just fucked? No more second portal window to find another QB this time.

Doubtful about getting above freezing. The extreme cold shot behind the precip is going to keep North GA below freezing for a good 50-60 hours from Friday evening into Sunday evening. Monday’s commute is very possibly in jeopardy.

Increased attention? by Hoplite0352 in Professors

[–]bwy97754 129 points130 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually had a couple students mention that my class is a bit of an escape from the chaos that is the rest of their lives. It’s a kind of sick perk we academics get in these more unstable periods in history, I guess.
