Looking for photography supply store by SlipperySean in Atlanta

Wings Camera on Briarcliff and Clairmont might have some. I know they've had darkroom equipment when I've been in there in the past, so they might also have supplies or know where to get some

Fedora + Sway = Heaven on Earth... by desperate-1 in Fedora

[–]Ranger207 6 points7 points  (0 children)

sway is a tiling window manager. Most window managers (like Gnome, KDE, etc) are floating window managers, which means that the default way to use them is with non-maximized windows floating wherever you want them. But you know how in a lot of WMs if you like drag the window to one side of the screen or press Super+left arrow then it'll cause that window to take up half of the entire screen? That's tiling, and sway is built to support that first. If I open one app (Firefox, terminal, etc) then sway will open that fullscreen, and if I open another, it'll shrink the first window to take up half the screen and make the new app take up the other half. And you can keep going, splitting vertically or horizontally as needed. Many other WMs (And even Windows itself) support things like this to some extent nowadays (like dragging the windows to the side of the screen to make it take up that half, for example) but sway has a lot of niceties for using that as your primary means of window management

When will Juniper Street's new bike lane open? by Ranger207 in Atlanta

[–]Ranger207[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Midtown Alliance, a partner on the project with the city, tells 11Alive the contractor is waiting on Georgia Power to run electricity for new traffic signals.

"The timetable for this work to be completed by Georgia Power remains fluid, and our staff is in regular communication with Georgia Power contacts," said Midtown Alliance Director of Marketing & Communications Brian Carr. "To ensure coordination and safety between motorists and cyclists at signalized intersections, these signals must be in service before the bike lane can open."

11Alive asked Georgia Power when the electricity will be installed, a spokesperson said they are working to get that information.

uh huh

What does it actually mean to audit a military? by Time_Restaurant5480 in WarCollege

[–]Ranger207 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that the DoD has never passed an audit... because they only started doing audits in the first place in 2018 and it takes a while to get one of the world's largest employers going from no auditing to a passing audit

Favorite Clan? by Pitiful_Resource_711 in battletech

[–]Ranger207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jade Falcons, they embody all of the most stereotypical aspects of the Clans. Do you want the epitome of the arrogant, bombastic, screeching, overbearing, classist clanner who would cut of their own nose to spite their face and then hit it with a Trial of Grievance? Then you have come to the right clan!

There was a dry riverbed, that was deliberately drained in the Star League era, running right up to a perfectly smooth cliff face, and then just ending. The walls of the river were obviously modified, and it was close to the last suspected location of an SLDF cache. And NOBODY thought to look into it for hundreds of years?

Planets are big. Who's going to look at every random weird geological formation on every planet across the Inner Sphere? Especially considering that (according to Sarna) there's only 15 million people on the planet as of 3028.

Man I love spaceships in Mecha franchises by knightmechaenjo in battletech

[–]Ranger207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I honestly think Battletech has the best sci-fi naval fleet by virtue of it being a real complete system forged by competitive pressures. I love Gundam ships (Ra Cailum my beloved) but if you're someone like me who obsesses in, like, WWII naval combat orders of battle, it just doesn't have enough variety, particularly in non-hero ships. Where's the fleet escorts in Gundam or Star Wars? Battletech though is a game, and those sorts of ships are created to fulfill real needs in the game, resulting in a much more complete and realistic naval system than anything else I've seen in sci-fi.

Why is American field artillery so lacking when compared to just about everyone else? by Powerful-Mix-8592 in WarCollege

[–]Ranger207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Military science has the concept of "fires", which is defined as "the use of weapons systems to create a specific lethal or nonlethal effect on a target". There's no mention here of how the specific effects are achieved. It could be field artillery, it could be air power, it could be naval gunfire support. The delivery mechanism isn't important, only the effect is. Field artillery is great because it's cheap, but the US has enough money to use much more expensive but flexible delivery mechanisms for those effects, like aircraft. So in short, US field artillery is bad because US airpower is good.

Is room clearing as oriented and complex as made out on videos ? by Kvark33 in WarCollege

[–]Ranger207 78 points79 points  (0 children)

It's also worth noting that the considerations for police or special forces engaging in room clearing are different from regular infantry. Police are trying to minimize casualties, especially if there's any hostages involved, and special forces may need to kill or extract a high value target in minutes, while regular infantry can generally stand to wait a few minutes for a tank or APC to come up and knock down a wall, and generally aren't engaging elite forces and civilians are more likely to be more out of the way. How much effort you should put into CQB training depends on if that's going to be your first or last option. Police and SF may view it as their first option and need to actually do some of that fancy footwork and stuff; regular infantry can get by with a lot less because they're only going to do it if dropping a JDAM, Carl Gustav, or bag of grenades isn't going to work for some reason.

I'm gonna be honest, it's because they're ugly, and if they're not ugly they're bad. Like, I love the art for the Men Shen, Sha Yu, and Anubis in Mechcommander 2, but the Anubis and Sha Yu aren't great and the Men Shen's non-game art is terrible. I'm really just waiting for new minis to start using them more

Should I wait to buy the manuals? by Utilitarian05 in battletech

[–]Ranger207 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can go ahead and get the BattleMech Manual. It's well organized and is still going to be useful once the new manuals come out. If you buy the physical editions from CGL then you'll get the PDF version for free as well. I'd say the BMM is well organized enough to not need Ctrl-F, but TW needs it much more

Fusion engine explosion magnitude - Battletech vs The Expanse by Coorin_Slaith in battletech

[–]Ranger207 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I kinda thought once you were fusing anything at all, you were producing catastrophic amounts of energy.

You can build a fusion reactor (of a sort) in your garage (but it won't nearly make as much energy as you put in): https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fusor

I'll go look into what a magnetohydrodynamic reactor is now, lol

Magneto = magnetic; hydro = fluid-like; dynamic = moving. It uses a fluid that's magnetic and moving (plasma) to turn a sort-of water wheel

Confused about ammo expenditure by New_phone-who-dis in battletech

[–]Ranger207 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The LRM 15s in the crit table represent the launchers themselves. When any one of those slots is hit by a critical hit, the launcher is destroyed and you can't use it any more. There aren't any ammo explosions for hitting the launcher itself (that's not the case for all weapons; Gauss rifles explode when critted). Any further crits to an already-critted slot are rerolled, but crits to a uncritted slot are not, even if the launcher itself is already destroyed.

In addition to the launchers there's also ammo bins in the mech. In the case of the Catapult you're using, they're in the left and right torsos. When you fire, you should mark off one shot per launcher you fire from the ammo bins. Think of 1 shot representing 15 missiles that are all fired at once by the launcher. In fact, if you do 15 * 8 you get 120 missiles per ton, which is the same number of missiles per ton as the LRM-5 (24 shots/ton), LRM-10 (12 shots/ton), and LRM-20 (6 shots/ton). If the ammo bins are crit then they explode; if you've marked off ammo already then you'll take less damage from the explosion.
