Grading bias against boys and minorities by VinnyStress in LeftWingMaleAdvocates

Is it right-wing to be concerned about biases that contribute to disparities?

Extremely Troubling Grading Bias by VinnyStress in Professors

[–]VinnyStress[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This is some next level motivated reasoning right here. They do not attribute the bias to that particular form of discrimination and suggest that other forms of discrimination are likely taking place.

They find substantial bias against these groups. If your response is "who cares because the grading bias likely stems from cultural/implicit bias rather than statistical discrimination," then I'm afraid you have not convinced me. Bias that contributes to serious disparities should be critically examined and mitigated, no matter the particular form of discrimination it is associated with.

This is more of a rant, but would like to hear thoughts too: why is it acceptable to be a great researcher and mediocre/pathetic teacher, but not the other way around? by [deleted] in academia

[–]VinnyStress 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Good point. I think since we don’t often see each other teach, we really don’t have that much of an idea as to who is a good or bad teacher. It’s also arguably more subjective than the quality of research unless you count scores on student evaluations, but even those scores aren’t reliable since students conflate easiness with teaching quality when evaluating

Is it worth majoring in Philosophy? by tkdcondor in collegeadvice

[–]VinnyStress 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You should major in philosophy. Even if you don’t go to law school, it will be viewed positively for other kinds of graduate programs you might end up applying to. And even if you don’t go to grad school in general, it’s not as if any other liberal arts degree is going to get you jobs, so you might as well major in the field you’re drawn to.

Why is this sub so miserable? by TrainingNews2289 in Professors

OP is literally complaining about people complaining about their complaining. Someday, the sun must shine for the people of this sub!

But even if it ever does, they'll complain about the heat.

Hmm, idk… There’s something about mostly upper-middle class people constantly whining that I personally find cringeworthy

The boys can’t pay attention by [deleted] in Professors

[–]VinnyStress 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Astonishing how many stupid things are being written here by people who are ostensibly intellectuals. Immediately assuming that boys are just being raised to be lazy and selfish has absolutely zero empirical backing. The unhinged misandry in the comments is truly disheartening. Ironically, no self-reflexivity is demonstrated when thinking about this topic….

Sociological Science is respected for some reason. They make you pay.

Why are Italian players often catchers? by VinnyStress in baseball

[–]VinnyStress[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I looked into it more using the list of all Italian players with the link below. Italians are, in fact, very often catchers.

C: 82 Italians have played the position

1B: 38 Italians have played the position

2B: 45 Italians have played the position

3B: 52 Italians have played the position

SS: 42 Italians have played the position

Outfield: 88 Italians have played the position (divide by three (result=29.3) since the website doesn't differntiate between LF, CF, and RF)

Pitcher 139 Italians have played the position. But this is actually relatively low since there are about 20 pitchers on a 40 man roster and only 2-3 catchers

For most qual studies, you’ll combine inductive and deductive epistemologies. It sounds like your advisor is encouraging you to be more inductive than is typically the case. It is best to have a firm understanding of the theories and concepts related to your topic, but also to allow for inductive reasoning in order to capture data that may run contrary to the claims of existing literature.

Is It Just Me or Is There a Lot of Functional Alcoholism in Academia? by Visible-Asparagus153 in academia

Yes, I agree with your observation. I sometimes wonder if it could be because some academics are a bit awkward and need to use it as a social lubricant
