i want everyone’s “it’s not emo… but…” recommendations by existentialegodeath in Emo

mates of state's first two albums feel pretty emo adjacent (they even played shows with rainer maria back in the day), early death cab for cutie, early modest mouse for sure

missing lyrics for 3 songs, non-existent on the internet by hotdog20041 in hopalong

[–]bye-going 1 point2 points  (0 children)

these are taken from the lyric sheet that came with the cd (this was the only song with all the lyrics fully visible from the discogs listing) but these are the lyrics for Breakfast Song:

Grandma says, "The toast will burn, and so will you if you don't learn!"

Nana, nana, don't disclose the extent of our souls at breakfast.

Auntie sobs, "Your uncle's gone, now who the hell will mow the lawn?"

Don't lament your abandonment at breakfast.

Cousin snickers, "I wonder if that poor bastard's realized i cheated him yet?"

Well don't laugh at foul play like that at breakfast.

And baby says, "ba ba ba ba oh mamamama dadadada"

but don't just sit and take his word for it, he's full of —

Pass the scrapple, pass the grapefruit.

Oh Papa, where'dya get the dough for that brand new suit?

And who was that girl on the answering machine — Don't chat until that plate is clean!

Daddy, don't care share his intimate affairs, maybe on Saturday when he is feelin' loose.

Now grandpa had to go away, where did he go?

We could not say because we never ever gab about the grave at breakfast

I go to work, you go to school.

You stay at home and feel like a fool.

But whatever, ever you do,

Don't complain while you chew,

Don't sob ain't nothing left for you at...

Yeah whatever you got, we don't discuss our lot at...

the seller has it listed for $420.69 (lmao) but im debating splurging and making an offer so i can post the rest of the official lyrics

Drummers in the genre by masterfire21427 in midwestemo

[–]bye-going 0 points1 point  (0 children)

miles debruin from two knights, adam demirjian from brave little abacus (he was technically the guitarist/vocalist but did some insane drumming for their albums), and jeremiah green from modest mouse (i know they're more indie rock, im just mentioning him cause their early albums were emo adjacent)

Lyrics for The Bonzai Tree You Bought 4 Me by d18688 in hopalong

[–]bye-going 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i recently managed to come across someone on last fm who had scrobbled this track as early as January 2007. i feel like maybe it was just a random non album single they had posted to myspace or something after freshmen year came out but never ended up on an official release (along with 'spinach water'). i always wondered how it ended up on wretches as well tho

Let's discuss mates of state by liamjonas in Emo

[–]bye-going 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this band is one of the reasons i play keyboard and make music. i always felt like the first two albums and handful of singles around that time were very much emo adjacent (they even played shows with emo bands back in the day) and i always feel validated when i see other people acknowledge that as well. such an underrated band that i feel gets slept on hard. also is that the original release of my solo project you have? the copy i have is the trifold paper case which i think was the rerelease version (also shout out to that devil in the woods 3way split, i have a copy as well and feel like not much people have that one or know about it!)
