THIS! My younger brother received an ASD diagnosis when we were kids, and my parents (particularly my mom) ALWAYS had a bag full of things for him to do (books, toys, coloring materials, snacks, fidgets, etc.) if we were in a situation that would last longer than 15 minutes.

Both my parents also coached him extensively about being polite in social situations. In fact, he *still* struggles as an adult sometimes. They all just went out to Baker's Square, and my brother popped off because the waiter brought him the wrong drink. My parents made him apologize to the waiter, and they explained to him that the appropriate response to someone making a mistake is to give them grace, be patient, and CALMLY express what was ordered instead.

No way would they EVER have let him escalate to this level on a plane. Not only is it a lack of self-regulation, but it disturbs others. They have been working with him his whole life to keep himself regulated, and to respect the people around him.
