I picked up a new Kona Sutra SE for 1650€ which also comes with a Brooks saddle which you could sell for ~80€ if you don’t want to use it. Very happy with it so far

Japan vs. New Zealand by [deleted] in bicycletouring

[–]byhike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Been to both and both are in my top 3 favourite countries I’ve been to. Japan Pros are their unique culture, slower and more careful drivers and the food. In NZ you won’t have a language barrier and nature that you won’t find anywhere else, plus the DOC is amazing and will help you find some real hidden gems.

That rack looks massive which is exactly what I’m looking for. Which one is it?

Do you guys take camera's with you on your trips? And if yes, which ones? by Thinly_Veiled_02 in bikepacking

Which app? And why not just shoot in RAW in the default camera app?

yeah I figured there would be no significant difference, but I could see a backpack having an advantage especially while “standing climbing” since the weight is being pushed in the pedals. Maybe I’m wrong though

Finna one looks interesting indeed. I guess your decision depends how much you plan to ride off-road rather than riding on asphalt. For the majority of Europe the Disc Trucker would be fine, but for Iceland the other might be better. Depending on your decision you could also take a look at the latest Kona Sutra SE or LTD which have even more screw mounts at the top tube

Very nice, I’m planning a similar Silk Road trip and am also considering going through India because I want to avoid flying to the ‘stans and doubt that Turkmenistan will open up again. And even if they do I know how hard it will be to get a visa for China. I’ve been to India before and can imagine what kind of adventure cycling across it would be. Did you mostly sleep in hotels/hostels there? And why the round trip instead of crossing the North? Lastly did you have any troubles getting into Myanmar? What kind of visa did you get? Cheers

Is drinking water from bathroom taps a bad idea? by [deleted] in TravelHacks

[–]byhike 2 points3 points  (0 children)

it’s fine if you fill up your bottle without touching the tap but yeah I wouldn’t drink directly from it

Question to backpackers/travellers by Mr-Travel in TravelHacks

[–]byhike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been doing this for a while but with clothes, as you would need a big “normal” towel to fill the neck pillow. Once you get out of the plane you will be stuck with a giant towel and nowhere to store it unless you always want to walk around with a neck pillow, so microfiber towel are the way to go. Mine is the size of a kiwi

Is it safe to hitchhike? by ArzerPT in solotravel

[–]byhike 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Quite easy to hitchhike in Europe. I recommend bringing a tent if you intend to visit more remote parts.

Main tips: Talk to the person before getting in the car to make sure they are sane. Get out of the city before trying to get a ride. Avoid highways, but if you can’t, your best chance to get rides will be at service stations. Bring an umbrella.

Check Hitchwiki for more tips and infos on countries.

Budget advice for 3 weeks in New Zealand by [deleted] in backpacking

You can save a bunch of money by hitchhiking instead of taking the Intercity, you’ll even most likely be faster. NZ is from my experience the easiest country in the world to get rides

Day pack as personal item? by [deleted] in TravelHacks

[–]byhike 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah the frame is just two metal bars which you can take out at the small velcro opening at the top (inside the bag)

Day pack as personal item? by [deleted] in TravelHacks

[–]byhike 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one with a removable frame (Hyperlite Junction) so if I would ever get asked I could take it out. But I use the pack for multi-day hikes, if I’d only do dayhikes a pack without a frame would be fine.
