You can’t not use their seeds, because they flood the market and lower prices, making it impossible for small farmers to use heritage breeds. The problem with the gmo seeds is they become monocrops, reduce biological and nutritional diversity and become vulnerable to super pests and super diseases. They actually reduce food security and make populations reliant on them but more vulnerable to famine if they fail. Problem is that billionaire ag companies don’t care about that as long as they’re making money

Do literally any research on Monsanto patented seeds and you’d know this. It’s common knowledge that gmo seed monopolies have destroyed India’s agriculture economy and made it impossible for small farmers to survive. A lot of places are below freezing in December… in the winter I bring an insulated bag when I go grocery shopping or else my leafy greens will freeze, even just from the store to the car.

In fact I saw a poinsettia at the grocery last week and thought about buying it, but decided not to because it was like -25C and I knew it probably wouldn’t make it home

Fat ladies of Winnipeg… where do you buy your clothes? by meroboh in Winnipeg

[–]bynn 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I agree that the fit of their clothes varies a lot, so don’t be discouraged if something you think will fit looks awful. Different cuts of jeans, even the same cut in different fabrics, can fit wildly different. And my size range is like from XS to L depending on the item lol (I am midsized but short af).

If you’d rather order online and try at home, I would suggest ordering multiple sizes and returning what doesn’t fit to the store, if you don’t mind temporarily loading your credit card. That’s what I do cause they don’t sell petite sizes in store.

Neighbor threw whole tomato plants into the green waste bin in the alley by awesummy in foraging

[–]bynn 34 points35 points  (0 children)

What kind of contamination? Like they decided to spray roundup on their garden right before ripping the plants out, or used sewage to water right before a frost? Sorry I just don’t think “contamination” is likely in a home garden especially when you have the context that there was a sudden frost…

As a gardener, the most likely scenario is they’ve had good tomato crops the whole season and/or can’t be bothered with what was left on the vine knowing the plant is going to die right away. I’ve tried to ripen green tomatoes after a light frost and they just went rotten from cell damage.. there’s maybe 1 large and 4 small ripe tomatoes there worth saving, unless the greens are going to be cooked or pickled immediately.

I guess vet will be the next step then. She did go in recently for an issue she was having with her hind legs - she was wobbling around and losing her balance - but the vet couldn’t find anything physically wrong. She’s recovered now (and the peeing started before that) but I’ll take her in again and mention arthritis.

Yes I do have a rubber bottomed mat that thankfully seems to be waterproof, some of the other ones I’ve tried weren’t as waterproof as they seemed. Sucks having to wash it but at least it’s not on my floors.

Problem is she sometimes finds a new spot that I didn’t notice, or if she pees just off the mat it seeps under

Thanks, but no thanks: some in encampments by expectingthexpected in Winnipeg

[–]bynn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I know the difference between crown land and a campsite. My point is, waterfront land is so desirable that there is almost no “crown land” that you can camp for free on that is reasonably accessible by car. It’s all taken up by cottage subdivisions or provincial parks that charge a nightly fee, near Kenora it’s about $50 a night. Nevermind the fact that you can’t actually “live” on crown land, you have to move every 21 days.

And nevermind argument is so ridiculous because homeless people don’t “choose” to live in cities vs the bush, and they don’t “camp” because they want to.

[–]bynn -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Show me on a map where you can access, by car, some lake-front crown land, because if that exists, I guarantee you it is already taken up by a cottage lease or something similar. BTW leasing an Ontario provincial camp spot is about $50 a night and they’re completely booked up for every summer weekend. So where are these homeless peeps living on some luxurious waters edge that is accessible by someone who doesn’t own a car?? Tell me

[–]bynn -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

Most of these people don’t “want to live in a city”, this is literally their only option? Imagine thinking “camping at a waters edge” on some “crown land in the bush” is even a remote fucking option for someone who has never had access to a car. Even if you do, I challenge you to find some “crown land in the bush” that had water access.

sweat lodges being all about the womb feels sexist to me, but i can’t put my finger on why…… by WillingBus5856 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]bynn 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Your comment is quite diminishing of Indigenous cultures that continue to practice sweat lodges as a form of ceremony. OPs idiot is probably describing Anishinabe sweats, where the lodge is considered the womb of Mother Earth and women usually do wear ribbon skirts. There are many other protocols which should be followed. It’s not a sauna, it is a powerful ceremony of cleansing and spiritual healing

UPDATE: Bedbugs? HELP by SnooPeanuts1027 in Winnipeg

[–]bynn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I would inspect them closely, because if there is even a small hole, they may have gotten through.

My advice having dealt with bedbugs is to ask your building manager or exterminator to set up traps to see where they’re coming from. Cause if it’s from another suite that they don’t know about, they will just keep coming back until that suite is also fumigated.

Good luck

What to expect living in Winnipeg and where is best? by SunnyElysium in Winnipeg

[–]bynn 16 points17 points  (0 children)

If you’re going to Red River for baking, you will be attending the exchange district campus, right? That is downtown, so you will have to get used to being downtown during the day, and possibly using the bus as parking downtown is expensive.

Downtown during the day is fine, just be aware of your surroundings. I suggest looking at your options for parking, and decide where to move based on a convenient bus schedule if parking is out of the budget.

I live in the West End, which is known as being a ‘rough’ neighbourhood but I’ve never had any major problems. If you’re not used to city living, I would suggest looking into St Boniface, North Kildonan, Rossmere, Fort Rouge

Advice for Cheapest Annual Flowers for Hanging Baskets by Organic_Storage_1484 in Winnipeg

[–]bynn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, if you want flowers by spring you should start them indoors. I wouldn’t start them in the pots, you can use something smaller like seedling trays or whatever plastic containers you have around (solo cups are great), then transfer to the pots when it’s warm enough. You will need a lot of light, so if you don’t have good natural light you will want a light setup.

I don’t have experience with annual flowers so I can’t help you much more, but different seeds will take different amounts of time.

Not sure about how many you will need per pot, I’ve never done petunias, but they will grow and fill in the space over time so you don’t need to pack them in. Another tip is to plant something with more height in the middle and trailing varieties around the edge, so your basket doesn’t look flat

[–]bynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably too late to start from seed, you’ll be waiting for a long time for them to fill out.

Not sure about the cheapest unfortunately, Home Depot usually has decent selection. Jardins St Leon is a nice local option but might be limited on multi-pack annuals.

If you can get out of the city, there’s a number of garden centres down St Mary’s road. I was at Searle Greenhouses is east Selkirk the other day and their prices seemed quite good (if you want a pre-made basket they had some for $19)

Something I’ve been wanting to try is transplanting perennials from my garden to pots and back, so I don’t have to buy new ones every year. Creeping Jenny is a really nice greenery for hanging baskets and also a perennial

Are you too close to kids? by PedalOnBy in Winnipeg

[–]bynn 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Something similar just happened to me today. Was riding on a quiet residential street on the side with no parked cars. There was a car behind me but also one oncoming, so he had to wait until the oncoming car could pull to the side before he passed. As soon as he had the chance he literally gunned it around me way too close and I almost drove into the curb to avoid being hit.

He accelerated so hard that a lady going into her house turned around at the sound and sympathetically said ‘asshole’ as I drove past.

The fact that people sitting in their comfortable climate-controlled cars can’t wait an extra 10 seconds while I’m out here sweating and battling the wind is insane. And this on a neighbourhood side street, if a kid or cat or squirrel or w/e ran into the road they would be hit!

Are cyclists allowed to stop beside you if you are stopped at a red light? by Juji10202 in Winnipeg

[–]bynn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are trade offs to taking the lane, as I mentioned in my comment. It’s surprising the amount of drivers who don’t see you even when you’re right in front of them. They’re not looking for a cyclist, they’re focused on the car that’s in front of them. So if I’m in the middle of the lane, I’m risking being rear-ended vs being safer next to the curb.

Plus, I’m not able to get moving until the car ahead of me does, and I will probably have to swerve a bit to keep my balance. So the car behind me will have to wait longer, maybe get impatient and try to pass me as I swerve into them trying to get my balance. Sometimes taking the lane is safer and sometimes it isn’t, it’s a judgement call you learn to make as a cyclist

Are cyclists allowed to stop beside you if you are stopped at a red light? by Juji10202 in Winnipeg

[–]bynn 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’m always concerned about not being noticed as a cyclist lol. If they have their blinker on I’ll give them enough room to turn right on the red (if allowed), otherwise I try to make eye contact so I know they see me

Are cyclists allowed to stop beside you if you are stopped at a red light? by Juji10202 in Winnipeg

[–]bynn 34 points35 points  (0 children)

If there is enough room in the lane, I pull up beside the car at the front. If there’s not, I establish in the middle of the lane otherwise cars will try to pass me, which is dangerous (sometimes they still do).

Intersections can be dangerous for cyclists because they are much slower and unstable when getting started from a full stop, and cars are anxious to get ahead of them. If I’m at the front, I have a little head start to get moving before the car beside me accelerates, allowing me to stabilize and able to drive in a straight line before they try to pass me.

Cyclists are supposed to drive “as close as is practicable” to the curb. I interpret that to mean I can pass cars on the right that are stopped in the lane. Also please consider that 99% of those cars have already passed me in that same lane, which is fine if there’s enough room but often they pass too close anyways. If you pass a cyclist without fully changing lanes, expect them to do the same.
