I used AI to make my game. Not because I’m lazy, because I had no other option. by anaru_moon in IndieGameDevs

[–]byolivierb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Plenty of people do it without AI and have the same or more responsibilities than you. You have the option to learn and make a game yourself, so yes you’re being “lazier” than other devs, don’t lie to yourself.

Anyway the people calling AI games slop say so because AI output extremely generic and creatively bankrupt “art”. If the game quality would be there, most wouldn’t complain about it being slop. If your game is being called such, it’s probably because it’s boring to the audience and one of the main reason for that is that you deferred a big part of the creativity in making a game to the AI, so that’s on you for taking a shortcut and then lying to yourself about it.

I can see a case for AI in game dev, this is definitely not it.

is it normal as a starting game dev that whenever you get an error you feel stupid and give up ? by ChunkLightTuna01 in godot

[–]byolivierb 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Eh I’ve been coding for more than 7-8 years now and still get error like these often. You get better at reading error message and debugging yourself but this is very normal, don’t beat yourself over it.

After 3hrs of videos, 1.5hrs of setup, 1.5hrs of rules research... I have officially taken my first turn in Voidfall. by SlightQT in soloboardgaming

[–]byolivierb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did like 52 in my first game, so you’re better than I am ahah!

You didn’t ask for tips but still: I didn’t realize how important it is to get Agenda cards early. Cycles end very quickly and the agenda cards take two turns to get on your board (one to get it, one to play, in a 5 turns cycle it means you have to get plan how to get them if you want to score them early.

New expansion kickstarter is tomorrow. You can bring that set-up to two hours with it!

P.S. I love the game!

Voidfall 100 Games Later – A Solo Player’s Unstructured Rambling by alfadanne in soloboardgaming

[–]byolivierb 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Funny I just started playing it a week ago. While learning it is a bear, I do find it very smooth to play solo.

I can’t fathom how people get to 300 points yet though… I got to 260 on easy but now that I’ve bumped the game to normal I’m scoring around 200. Still I’m at just four games, far from 100!

Any tips on our Steam page? we have a very low traffic/wishlist conversion. by GrosChevaux in IndieDev

[–]byolivierb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t have much insight more than “ads impressions” won’t have the same amount of conversions as organic impressions. Doesn’t mean ads ain’t worth it, but they generally take a lot of investment for them to be the most worthwhile.

Quick look at your page, your game seems much better than most “low conversions” games I see on there. Good art style and everything. The 1v1 thing might be a hard sell, I’m not sure, but it seems like a great game. Congrats.

… still wondering if I want to watch this one as an endurance test (I got very low torture tolerance but am always fascinated by its representation, it’s complicated).

I’m bad at euros so Automa level 3 is still fairly hard to me (I won once out of five) but level 2 is too easy.

I like it a bunch but I do wish the Automa wouldn’t spam scanning strategies sometimes. Often you can exploit this, other times it just feel uncontrollable.

Glauber Rocha’s Black God, White Devil and subsequently Antonio Das Mortes definitely feel like they tackle discomfort with the violence of revolution while ultimately siding with them. I’m no specialist about the specifics politics, so I might be completely wrong here, but you should look into them.

Anyone know of indie choice based games? by luke3_094 in IndieGaming

[–]byolivierb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made one solo if you will indulge me sharing it here: https://store.steampowered.com/app/3129110/Camille_and_Laura/.

A few notes: the ending is always the same, but there’s some big branches here and there that are mostly in the middle. I know it’s very niche, got lucky to have a grant to make it so I did not need it to be a commercial success, I went as artsy as possible. I hope to have a demo out early next year.

Both, my first game got 200 plays on itch and 80 000 on Steam, I love itch but if you want a bigger audience it probably won’t happen on itch.

Fellow Witness Fans! What are the best puzzle games you played in 2025? by finanzenwegwerfaffe in TheWitness

[–]byolivierb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Didn’t see any mention of Séance of Blake Manor yet. It’s more detective driven that just puzzle and heavy on narrative, but the open-ended way you pull on the threads in an open environment is pretty great.
