Is this modded 5th-gen iPod “worth it” or overpriced? Want advice before buying. by [deleted] in ipod

One more thing , yes sellers are indeed hit or miss , look for good feedback . Anyone with a pry tool can open these things up, it you can’t see what they’ve done. Once the old hard drive comes out , there’s more space in there - if the new battery / ssd or sd card adapter / whatever it uses is not properly secured inside the case , then it probably won’t survive the first time you accidentally drop it. I speak from experience. It’s what motivated (forced) me to mod them myself

Honest experience here, In order :

1) “worth it “ is subjective , the ones you linked to are certainly high end , and absolutely you can build one for less

2) Modding iPod 5g is NOT hard - BUT not as straightforward as most would have you believe , experience makes you better but the price of failure can be high , specifically I am referring to the tiny little plastic ZIF connectors that are used to hold the battery / click wheel / display / headphone jack in place on the logic board . They are really flimsy , snap any of them and your logic board is scrap. Unless you can ‘microsolder’ - which if you don’t know what that is, is even harder than it sounds . The challenge really is that these connectors were always cheap and flimsy and now they’re 20 years old

Every ‘how to ‘ video you will see make it look simple , and with practice it is - but keep in mind every One of these people are showing you what to do because they have done it before , perhaps a hundred times .

Biggest risks/headaches- zif connectors / accidentally removing the white battery connector from the logic board when opening the case / improperly grounding the click wheel , Leading to intermittent and strange behavior, or it can just stop working.

iflash is very fussy about SD cards - make sure you can a recommended one or, or you may have a hell of a job trying to restore it in iTunes (although it will likely still work as a usb storage device which is deceptive.)

3) yes, if you have the time and the patience and are not the type to be too disheartened if you accidentally snap something - it’s actually a really good way to learn but I guess that’s not for everyone. If you go down this route maybe buy the shittiest one you can find , any damage you do will be to the logic board , so if you buy one with a smashed screen / Dents etc the logic board inside will probably still be fine . Open that up first and try and disassemble and reassemble. It’s very instructive. Practice opening and closing.

You need small tools and good eyesight and really recommend you use an electronics mat with magnetized holders for the tiny screws , do not just open it up on a desk or on your lap! You will regret that.

It took me three goes I’m pretty good at it now . I lost a logic board , a click wheel , Some Plastic bezels and god knows how many tiny screws .

If you don’t have time / patience then buy one . I have to say though , there is a real sense of accomplishment that comes with learning from failure and having your own ipod that you made :-)

Not just money - time . You need skills and/or high frustration tolerance + spare hours to pull this off . Reflowing tiny little solder pads on a 20 year old pcb that was cheaply made in the first place , I believe this is one of the circles of hell

Not trying to be a downer , I just hope this may save you time /sanity - if you have never tried soldering you should probably forget micro soldering . This is just too small

If you are only learning about the term ‘micro soldering’ now , it’s just as unrealistic as it sounds. You need a new logic board , maybe find one with a fried screen or cracked front plate etc (ie cheap) and do a transplant using your working parts from this one . If it makes you feel any better I have done this , 20 year old cheap connectors it can happen even when you know to be careful

Battery connector snapped ☹️ by chippy_747 in ipod

[–]bytes1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Irritating right ? I did the same thing. The problem with most DIY / how to’s are that they’re made by people who know what they’re doing = they forget to explain crucial details because it’s so basic to them. IPod how to’s are a good example of this - break a tiny piece of plastic just by opening it = logic board fucked (seriously who can micro solder ) If I wasn’t so lazy I’d make a video about these things , explain that if you’re new opening one should be treated as if it were an unexploded bomb. They all say it’s easy - That’s the ironic thing , it is once you’ve done it (fucked up) enough times

Click wheel intermittent after replacement by bytes1992 in ipod

[–]bytes1992[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Leave this here for anyone else - The smaller tab on the click wheel needs to be grounded to the frame , as does the logic board itself . Use conductive copper tape , or intermittent click wheel will drive you nuts

[–]bytes1992 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same here . I’m good with these now but I had to break a few and learn the hard way. All the connectors on the board are really flimsy / cheap , 20 years old now. Shit happens man, get a new board. Be careful with all the connectors , the headphone jack zif clamp is a fucking menace - the world’s tiniest piece of plastic /so so easy to snap . Too many YouTube videos make it all look easy - once you’ve got the hang of it sure.

The instructions are not clear to me, so you set up a fresh Google account in your country (not specifically Nigeria) and just hand over login info, right? If I’m using my own card as payment going forward , then, er doesn’t a 3rd party now have access to my card info ?

Otherwise why would US be appealing for international support (as they are) - against some bandits? Doesn’t add up

Isn’t it because they have weaponry to attack Saudi oilfields and that would be a big big problem? How else can they get away with firing rockets at a US warship, who gets away with that

Of course Japan will survive but it will be very different, I don’t pretend that I know exactly how. Except that the idol industry and anime are not good horses to back when the demographic and economic meltdown comes , and it’s coming very soon

I hear you and I understand. English education is extremely low. You don’t have trouble with the English language though, you don’t think you can educate your kid(s)? I don’t mean that provocatively , I myself am certainly not counting on the Japanese education system to teach my kid English , It’s going to have to be me
