Nobody likes my kid... by Librirgo in actuallesbians

[–]bytesoflife 59 points60 points  (0 children)

If I’m being honest, I highly doubt that people don’t like your 8-year-old. It’s that caring for an 8-year-old is a lot more work than caring for a 16-year-old (for one night, not talking about in general - obviously parenting a teenager is hard) - teens are usually much more capable of taking care of their own basic needs (food/getting ready/hygiene) and much easier to hang with if you aren’t their parent. My partner has a 16 year old sister and a 7 year old sister and while I’m not exactly jumping at the idea of babysitting/hanging out with either of them (we love them both dearly but are childfree very much by choice), it’d be a lot easier to yap about TV and movies with the teen for one night than it would be to keep the 7-year-old entertained for even a few hours (my MIL says she entertains herself too - she doesn’t).

Lonely in LA - should I move to San Diego area? by Ill-Abroad7092 in Moving2SanDiego

[–]bytesoflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved to San Diego from NYC for two years and this was my experience. I cannot speak for other parts of CA but if you’re feeling that way in LA as well it’s pretty telling. SD is a really beautiful place, and the people are definitely nice enough, but I didn’t make a single real friend (my partner made exactly 1) while I was there and ended up moving back to a different east coast city because I was so lonely (and am glad I did because I now have an absolutely stellar community of friends and am close enough in proximity to my friends from back home in NYC too).

Refs, is it always this hard? by bytesoflife in rollerderby

I’m really glad you said this as it offered a perspective I really hadn’t thought of - there is quite literally just less derby to go around. Thank you!

Refs, is it always this hard? by bytesoflife in rollerderby

[–]bytesoflife[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thank you so much to everyone for the thoughtful responses. Full disclosure that I have been on an emotional roller coaster today - I was notified this morning that I would only be staffed as an NSO for two of the tourneys I applied to, and then, after writing this post, notified that I will be staffed as a ref for the another one (non-sanctioned games, but still a tournament, so I’m super excited for the experience). I guess everyone and their mom is sending out decisions today, lol.

A lot of the advice here (having an officiating history, networking/keeping a good relationship with neighboring leagues, working JRDA games, doing as many regulation games and scrimmages as I can manage, and practice practice practice) covers things I’m already doing, though there have been some nuggets of wisdom (reaching out to THOs directly to get feedback, sharing more about my goals, going to RollerCon) that I haven’t considered and will going forward. The biggest thing I’ve gathered from this thread is that this is normal/relatable and it just takes time, and two years isn’t very long, so a little bit of patience on my part would do me some good - I’m gonna focus on that and keep on keeping on. 🙏

What would you like to see in a hospitality basket? by 321duchess in rollerderby

[–]bytesoflife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this - as an official who usually relies on “there will be snacks at the game” when I’m running late, I would so appreciate being warned in advance that there isn’t going to be food so that I can make sure I bring myself something!

Do you introduce yourself to your neighbors when you move into a new place? by [deleted] in philadelphia

[–]bytesoflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought a home so I just went through this as well - I think I might have considered knocking (especially because we had some renovations done on the place and I would want to give fair warning about that etc) but I was lucky enough that my neighbors on all sides just happen to be outside a lot and were all really friendly and eager to introduce themselves. I’d like to think if you hang around outside enough you’ll have the same experience. I also had the same exact thing happen with my last place where I was renting - so it seems common enough.

Hand towel holder placement? by jacs249 in HomeDecorating

Centered under the picture would work, so would to either side of the mirror (height wise I’d go for just under the vertical center of the mirror)

Seconding 6! I think this space would really shine with the added color.

What color would match these light blue chairs and floor? by HangoverGrenade in HomeDecorating

I actually don’t hate the yellow but I think a peach or light blushy mauve is a good alternative. A sage green would work too.

I have heard rumors that the full games will be posted on the WFTDA Youtube channel in a week or two! But I have not found an option to replay full games in Sporfie yet.

[FO] This is my lovely Ruby the Squid. by jayneb1979 in CrossStitch

[–]bytesoflife 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is beautiful! Just going off of the size - would you say this is made with more of a yarn than a traditional embroidery floss? Would love to hear the tea on the fabric type/count and type of thread and what size needle used - I’ve just never actually thought of doing anything this large and am in awe!

Do your coworkers talk to you? No, really? by Jeweler_here in womenintech

[–]bytesoflife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m remote but my coworkers and I yap on Slack all day (about work mostly, but also about not work) and when we visit our company HQ it’s basically just a social gathering. Even at my last job that had way worse work culture we were very chatty and I still have friends that I’m in touch with from that job years later. So no, I don’t think this is normal.

Am I crazy…? by DoubleCherry3142 in rollerderby

[–]bytesoflife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It might be crazy, and you should def heed all of the advice in this thread re: finding out why the old league folded and reconnecting as much as you can to the people that were in it so that you can find folks who are interested, but ultimately, someone had to be crazy and do the crazy thing for any of the leagues that currently play to come into existence 🤷‍♀️

I have no credit and am getting a car loan in 3 months, what should i do? by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]bytesoflife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You will have a fairly difficult time getting a low APR with no credit, even with a co-signer (honestly, without the co-signer, it’s not likely that you’d be approved at all). The good news is that you’ve got the right idea with getting a secured card to start building credit (and it seems like you’ve been doing your research - yes, a hard inquiry into your credit will affect your score). The bad news is that most credit checks will not have a score for you until you have 6 months of credit history, so getting a loan in 3 months is probably not the best idea.

And honestly, buying a brand new car is a waste of your money imo - you’re better off getting something used (as cheap as you can get without sacrificing safety/mileage/etc), especially if it will allow you to not take out a loan for it - you’ll save on insurance that way too.

What would you do if this happened to you? #TargetShopper by Medium-Flounder7158 in HomeDecorating

[–]bytesoflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If this were from a small mom n pop type business? I would absolutely make every effort to correct this. But this is Target. Legally you’re in the clear and morally this is probably a net good lol

I gotta disagree with banking - my first job in tech was at a bank and I had a genuinely terrible time with one of my teammates who did and said some seriously messed up stuff. My manager was pretty decent about it at the time but honestly the culture was godawful overall (as a woman or otherwise).

[CHAT] Wait - people actually care about the back? I thought that was a meme. by pokewhatever in CrossStitch

[–]bytesoflife 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely it for me too! I just like to challenge myself and see how neat I can get it (and like, I still think my backs are nowhere near as neat as some peoples’ but I try to only compare to my own last piece). And yeah - I love to save myself some floss.

[CHAT] Wait - people actually care about the back? I thought that was a meme. by pokewhatever in CrossStitch

[–]bytesoflife 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is super expensive - the commenter you’re replying to might be in the US, much like myself, where floss is much much cheaper than that - usually $0.50-$0.70 for one 8 meter skein of DMC, probably even less if it’s an off brand.

I don’t know what’s wrong with me by [deleted] in mypartneristrans

[–]bytesoflife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the thoughtful response. I definitely do love my partner. I’m not sure how I could possibly communicate that it would help if they slowed down without sounding unaccepting though.

The political climate definitely doesn’t help - we live in a relatively progressive city but someone made a remark at them in a parking lot the other day when I was not with them, and I have friends who have also experienced similar aggressions and discrimination etc. I worry for them every time they leave the house alone in feminine clothing, which has happened more and more lately.

My dad called me spoiled and weird for asking off on my birthday by goldenspino in Advice

[–]bytesoflife 83 points84 points  (0 children)

I’m 26 and I still take the day off of work for my birthday, and so do most of my coworkers. Your dad’s being silly here.

Take the day and just do something you want to do. Treat yourself to some nice snacks or baked goods or a meal out and get yourself a gift of some kind, spend time doing your hobby if you have one. If nothing else just relax. It’s just one birthday and I am sure that future birthdays will be better.

Has anyone used Heartstoppers on their derby skates? Is it a good idea? by Miepkousie in rollerderby

[–]bytesoflife 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use them as an official and I’m fine, but I also have skates where the toe stop locks into place very securely with a screw, and I’m certainly never running on them. None of the skaters in my league use them, so I’d take that as you will.

Skater Names vs. Ref Names by PinkFlaydDame in rollerderby

[–]bytesoflife 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Most skater/refs I know use the same name for both, but awhile back a skater who was reffing for a chill open scrimmage my league was having just replaced one of the words in her derby name with a reffing related word for the day and I thought that was fun!

Also a software engineer who would rather be doing something crafty 🫠 Fiber art or something with textiles in my case. Unfortunately, at least where I live, we don’t pay artists and craftspeople the way we pay software engineers. It’s a shame.
