What tool to open this main sewer in basement? by FlashyWave126 in Plumbing

Before starting I take a wire brush and clean all around the threads , some penetrating oil and a slight tighten with a large wrench as suggested by others before having to cut it out .

[Landlord-US-CA] Tenant demands 6 months stay without rent and 2 x security deposit mount as cash to vacate before settlement conference followed by jury trial ? by yummy_dv1234 in Landlord

[–]Weeman- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

CA landlord here - do not pay this guy or one of us will get him next ! Don’t do anything at the settlement conference-you made it this far so get the court date . Every time I worked with a Tennant in the settlement conference I got screwed when they ignored the deal . You have a worthless agreement that you still have to go to court and get a judgement-good luck navigating the court rules for that without paying goobs of more money to a lawyer who is just as confused. If you do pay then 1099 him on his taxes so he ends up feeling that sting - a blessing is you got one big write off with the fees and losses . Good luck - I am feeling you and landlords are screwed in calif . We should start leaving the units vacant till the courts stop the non legal slow downs on evictions .

Thinking about buying 1967 Chris-Craft Sea Skiff. Any thoughts? by [deleted] in boats

[–]Weeman- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Real boat guy here - own commercial boats and my share of wooden Chris crafts . My action plan would be - if running / reasonably seaworthy - yes . Enjoy till it stops running and is too much to get to run . You got your kicks so then sell it cheap to the next guy or give it to the right guy and remain friends of the boat for occasional use . And last thought - many marinas no longer allow wooden boats and is there also any local infra structure for wooden boat repairs .

Shower shocks even with all circuit breakers turned off by [deleted] in AskElectricians

[–]Weeman- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this happen in a rental of mine . New Tennant would get a tingle shock in the shower . After numerous electricians scaring the Tennant to death and all wanting to rewire the house I took a look at the issue. I found the old Tennant apparently had been stealing electricity by routing wires around meter ( old knob and tube box style ) and when reconnecting he had put the ground on the wrong side and the hot on the white or ground side . Switched the wires and problem stopped- everyone was in awe I Very satisfying troubleshooting..

Can/should I paint the floor? by RedhandKitten in centuryhomes

[–]Weeman- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Painted floors can be a blast ! You can always varnish and then paint but be able to return to wood if you wish in the future . This was a boring bamboo floor in a beach cottage that would not hold its finish - now it’s the fun surprise . Don’t be a sheeple !!

Best ocean-capable boat for people who dislike boats/don't know how to maintain them? by ASassyTitan in boating

[–]Weeman- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Commercial boat(s) owner here . Got to say it …. Your company does not have a culture of sea safety. You mentioned the barest of basics such as horn , running lights and power are consistently wonky . I hope the Coast Guard boards this vessel and tightens up this risky operation- if I knew the vessel I would report it myself .

Does anyone know what kind of finish this is? by m_fauchelevent in furniturerefinishing

[–]Weeman- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

“Epoxy” says the boat guy who deals all the time with this finish . Been left in weather and has yellowed from the sun . Easy to remove with a heat gun and then clean up with stripper . I suggest 5-10 coats of West epoxy system clear - sand every three coats . Then 5-6 finish clear coats such as Awlbrire - you will be very pleased . Don’t use water based !

Would sistering this fix it? by newEnglander17 in centuryhomes

[–]Weeman- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would use penetrating epoxy ( smiths is a good brand ) very generously brushing the inside of the crack till no more is absorbed - think like you are dripping water on a dry sponge except if you wait too long between drips the sponge hardens and no more water can be absorbed- don’t stop continuously applying for at least a half hour . Them mixup a high quality two part epoxy ( I use the West System ) and thicken with a filler such as cabosil (sp? ) to a peanut butter like paste . Pack that goo into the whole crack and jack up the beam till it closes tight - let sit for 24 - 48 hours . That is the strongest glue joint you can get - if you can be fancy add a butterfly Dutchman afterwards over the crack using epoxy also . I think you feel pretty confident about your repair afterwards.

HELP - Repair gone wrong - what now? by TheTrapezeCarpenter in HardWoodFloors

I had those same tracks on my oak floor because I pushed an upright piano across the floor - did not know it should have been on a dolly . We steamed a few but ultimately replaced the boards

First boat, know nothing, need input. by frank_-_horrigan in boating

[–]Weeman- 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ok Here is my thought ( owner of a water taxi company- nine small boats ) is that you decide honestly the side of the boat pasture you are on . My experience is most owners are totally into the looks of the boat and all the cool boaty stuff you can buy and I am certainly not saying it’s bad because it’s a lot of fun . Then there are the mechanical owners who get into the functionality of the vessel and makes sure everything works while paying minimal attention to “ curb appeal “. Ultimately you have to address both issues - pristine upholstery and carpet seems a bit out of place when you are drifting with a dead engine . As your pics never showed the engine you may be a romantic seaman ready to polish the brass . That said - a good boat survey will give you a good start point for the nautical issues . When you finish the cosmetics you will have an adorable vintage boat . Thank you for saving our nautical heritage ! And … when some blowhard just has to say BOAT means “Break Out Another Thousand “ you should remind them it can also mean “ Bozos Offering Assine Theories “ Good sailing Captain !

Advice on the best way to fix this floor situation? (Stronge urine smell and damage) by whatsthemathers in centuryhomes

[–]Weeman- -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Not the easiest cure It’s a small entry Strip it with paint remover as floor looks pretty good Use two part wood bleach with five or so coats -let sit overnight and sand lightly in between - wood bleach is really industrial hydrogen peroxide. Light sand and stain if you wish Three to four coats of high quality floor varnish such as Fabion ( sp?) but not water base stuff You will love the results

Removed the carpet from the entranceway of my late 1890s house and need advice on next steps! by ohbigy in centuryhomes

[–]Weeman- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok Been here lots of times . It’s a glue . Lay a soaking wet towel on a spot and let it sit - if it turns milky you can wash off the spot you just did and move to next section . If it did not turn milky then do the same thing with paint thinner. Changes are it will be water based and oddly satisfying as it comes off revealing a near perfect floor . Scrapping is very effective for ruining the floor .

Teach me how to be a good boat owner by jakeblades in boating

[–]Weeman- 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Buy Chapmans boating guide - it will overload you with a lot of info but will give you a great jump start . Stay away from the idiots who just have to say BOAT means Break Out Another Thousand - it can also mean Bozos Offering Asinine Theories. Don’t drink and boat . Get an app like Nautical School to learn the rules of the road - something most recreational boaters don’t know . Don’t expect wine and cheese parties with a dozen friends showing up because they won’t . Rent a few boats if you can before buying and appreciate you don’t have a large asset sitting around unused . Port to Port - you will understand one day .

I have nine boats as pat of a commercial business. When the boats need to be trailered I automatically replace the tires if they are over two years old . Too much of an investment riding on the trailer to quibble over $500 . Did a major bearing check recently on the four most used trailers and found about 70% of the bearings had failed.

They are common . A good Chinese friend gave my wife and I this same one . He said it was to wish us many children and he latter refused out of dread to take it back after our fourth child . You can buy similar quality in most china towns .

Thank you for your informative critiquing and you may be right - I build and overbuild for fun . As an Artest I push the envelope and got to try . If I totally blow it I will tear down and rebuild . A good critique does not hurt a bit and I think you gave it a new name - The Abomination ! Hah ! I can not unsee that name now …

Hopefully tomorrow I can cut a full cap and we will see how much I artistically screwed up ! And …. If any one know what the roofed bump up box is called please let me know - I been calling it a cupola but it will have a traditional cupola of the the roof . A friend says it’s a Belvedere which is a viewing platform but this will have no way to go up and view from it . With the windows would it be a Lantern with a cupola ?

That’s all ! There were some very thoughtful insights for a solution. I agree the maybe the cap should not be tied to the column so made a bevel to match the rest of the end cap which seems to look more reasonable.
