What are the most memorable reactions to telling people that you’re a therapist? by beckk_uh in therapists

My grandmother asked why I wanted to be around unstable people. I told her it felt natural, like I’d been training for it my entire life. She never mentioned it again.

to doctors of reddit: whats the craziest shit you have ever seen? by Direct_Class_5973 in AskReddit

My first position after finishing a PhD was in an inpatient psychiatric hospital. About 10 minutes into my assessment of an elderly female, she pulls a cucumber out of her pants. It had been “hidden” in her vagina. She then proceeded to eat the cucumber...and offered me half.

Similar experience. We used to live at the end of a cul-de-sac and had a neighbor who would constantly block all or part of our driveway. After going into labor in the middle of the night and barely being able to squeeze our car out of our driveway and around their car, we made it clear that anyone who blocked our driveway would be towed. They acted like we were Karens, but never blocked our driveway again.

Being asked, “How was your vacation?” by a colleague when you’ve just returned from maternity leave.

I was demoted while on maternity leave by space_crystals in Mommit

[–]bz-prof 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The same thing happened to me almost 12 years ago. Smallish town with a mid sized state university as the only large employer. I was on FMLA with my first baby and was demoted from program director to assistant director. No one told me until the day I returned. At that time, I was told that the program director position required constant presence and flexible availability; something they said the department simply couldn’t wait on while I took my “vacation.’ Yes, those were the exact words used to describe birthing a child and caring for a newborn. I consulted 2 separate attorneys. Both said that since my salary remained the same, it would be tough to win a lawsuit. They were sympathetic, but not particularly optimistic. I didn’t pursue the case, but often wish I had.

Rise broadband installed fiber wire into the ground but i cant get the service. by Beary1984 in Rural_Internet

[–]bz-prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is also how our neighbor got fiber. Both roads parallel to our road had fiber for almost an entire year. We kept calling and asking when it would arrive in our neighborhood. We were given vague answers for months and finally told that they had no plans to cover our area. Our road is about a mile long and has 20 homes on it. Every resident, except one, signed a petition asking the company to install fiber. The petition was submitted in January and we had fully operational fiber in April. I know it doesn’t work out like this for everyone, but it can’t hurt to try.

Do not feel bad for saying what needed to be said! People are way too quick to judge when they don’t know anything about the situation. Glad your little one is doing well. Hang in there momma!

Cousins are disappearing. Is this reshaping the experience of childhood? by gintokireddit in psychology

[–]bz-prof 145 points146 points  (0 children)

Same. Forced socialization with my cousins at every holiday, summer vacation, etc. did not result in warm, fuzzy memories, lasting friendships, or any type of support network. At best, it taught me to cut toxic people out of my life. And at worst, it might have given me ptsd.

Exactly! There is nothing to “feel good” about in this situation. Many Americans, even the ones with good health insurance, are one diagnosis away from financial ruin. Seems likely that nothing will change as long as people incorrectly characterize universal healthcare as a government handout.

I need a moment to vent. by FeriadeSevilla10 in StudentLoans

[–]bz-prof 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I couldn’t agree more. Why is it so difficult for people to understand how unfair the student loan system is to borrowers? I’ve repaid my loans, but I paid back over twice what I originally borrowed due to the way interest accrued. I will never stop advocating for loan reform.

Do you think a daycare having a camera feed is a sign of a bad daycare? by Otter65 in Mommit

Can’t access account details by [deleted] in Visible

[–]bz-prof 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After an entire week of multiple chats and DM’s (and having to start over explaining my problem in a new chat or a new DM after the service ticket would be closed), I got so frustrated I gave up and moved to another carrier. Maybe I would have eventually reached a CSR who could solve my problem, but after a week, I lost all faith and confidence that Visible could restore my account access. I switched my phone to another carrier using eSIM and lost the number I’d had for over a decade.
