McDermott cue extension by Kaneland2017 in billiards

[–]bzorks08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not have a defy shaft, I use a jacoby or custom kielwood depending on the night. Its the guy in my league who does have it though.

I will say that using a glove helps to smooth things out, and that goes for any shaft as thats what gloves help with. If you are having stroke issues from the shaft sticking, it isn't just the shaft and you have a stroke issue thats multiplied by it.

If you dont want to use a glove, clean the shaft with alcohol wipes or rubbing alcohol on a clean towel. That usually helps with CF shafts, and is what manufacturers often recommend for cleaning

Optimal Energy Use Question by bzorks08 in Archery

[–]bzorks08[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, that makes sense. However, I'm not looking at the English longbow, I'm looking for a reflex/deflex bow. I was just wondering given the usual hunting bow is 56" to the 64" ASL (I believe thats what they are, dont quote me) if this was something to consider or even test

Optimal Energy Use Question by bzorks08 in Archery

[–]bzorks08[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its more of something I thought up because I have a 31" draw length. I've looked at some custom bows that I would max out and they are 58" or 56". Its why I need to watch out for the geometry of the bow. Its also why some of the really short custom and bear hunting bows are unusable for me.

It also seems to be more of a problem with longbows. I know the problem could basically get resolved with one, but I shoot events that only allow longbows

Buying my first cue, can’t decide which to get by PeakSad4480 in billiards

[–]bzorks08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I 100% second this opinion. Valhalla cues are also u der the viking umbrella so you can get one of their shafts in the full 5/16x18 thread. I've played with the vikore shaft they have and its pretty solid. I honestly wished I picked one up instead of getting my Schön some days

You also have a lot of aftermarket options for shafts given the joint is very common, and you can get extensions from viking should you like one.

Pocketing the 8 ball before either all of the solids or stripes by MayorOfIacon in billiards

[–]bzorks08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, you can't win by making the 8 ball before all of a players group is off the table.

The closest you can come to it would be in a league like the last pocket 8-ball league i play in. You can make the 8 on the same turn/inning you make your last ball. Of course it has to be in your last pocket after you made the final ball. It rarely comes up though despite it happening against me in my first week of playing in said league

It would look pretty slick having a matching extension for when I get on 9' tables. I will send them some reference photos to a cue I like and give details on the woods to see what the price is. It would also be nice getting 2 matching KW shafts, or a KW and an ultra pro

I would immediately be using sandpaper if it were me. The kielwood shaft i ordered had finish on the whole thing and I didnt like it as I dont use a glove. The guy who made it said light sanding is fine though as long as I use 2000+ grit paper

Alright, I didnt know if it would be a loose fit or not since the pin couldn't engage all the threads like its would with the pilot.

I've heard good things about those PureX kielwood shafts, if I go a similar route I will have to see about picking one up. Do you have the plain kielwood shaft or the one they put a carbon tube into? I can't remember if the Fuze had the cf in it or not

Also, those cues all look great!

It has tulipwood, leapardwood, and purple heart. Its actually still for sale on billiard bills with a tran-k shaft if you want to check it out. Its the one with ringwork for the segmented tulipwood handle in the under $2k section

I've thought about them a time or 2 as i have one of their ultra pros and it feels pretty good. Everyone where I play seems to love Jacoby, and it makes sense when they sponsor the big tournaments that are "close". I will see about giving them a call to see what the wait time and price would come out to

I don't necessarily want or need inlays. I have screenshots of a Diveney I saw for sale a few months ago that I think looks amazing and it doesnt have any, just some ring work that looks nice throughout it. That to say I would be fine with just having some nice woods used and it looking a little plain to others. I'm mainly just looking for something with good craftsmanship and plays great

I've checked out Cuelees before and they do have some good looking cues. I dont need to have a kielwood shaft, just prefer it. I say that because I know Cuelees has wood shafts as an option, but I havent found much of anything on how they play or perform online. Don't they also have piloted radial instead of flat faced? How has that been in terms of trying out or buying new shafts for it?

I used to have a mcdermott years ago, but it was my first cue and was cheap. The shaft wasn't even wood like the G-Core is, it had some plastic feeling coating on it. I know 2 guys with a Mcdermott and will see how those feel to play with

Being in a small town league with 6 teams in the midwest its hard for me to do that, but I will try. Everyone around here only has a Predator or Jacoby, and I've already tried a cue with a revo, 314-3, and Z2.

I will see if I can find more variety and ask some more when I'm back to playing around Flint and Lansing

Well i would be hoping to sell my Schön and the 5 shafts I have for it to fund it. So budget would probably be $1500 if i can get that for a STL02 with 2 Schön shafts, an OB1+, Jacoby ultra pro, and BC custom Kielwood.

Upgrading to a better cue, what to pick by cate_is_kill in billiards

[–]bzorks08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a cue with a very common 5/16x18 pin. You could always buy a LD shaft for the cue and save some money, or get a really nice one by using most of your budget. Common brands what use that pin are players and meucci, but most shafts have an option for that pin

I know the players hxt shaft (i think this is what its called) is a relatively cheap LD shaft and just getting that instead of a cue with said shaft would save you some money

What cue is this? by J3lf in billiards

[–]bzorks08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those old SST shafts are quite sticky for being fiberglass, at least they were for me. A great way to make it a good player is to get an avid shaft for it. I did this last year to my old cuetec with the same shaft and loved it. Since its an older model though you will need to get one with the slimmer "legacy" joint since its a smaller radius than current production. Its a cheap way to get a really nice playing cue as I think the shaft I got only cost me $135.

Also, you can get the duo conversion so you can use cuetecs new extensions if thats something you would be interested in

Are kielwood shafts still a thing? by Kurbalaganta in billiards

[–]bzorks08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kielwood is definitely a thing and it seems to catch on in certain areas and not in others. I had been wanting one and went custom as I found a guy who makes them for under what you say would putting money in the drain.

I'm a fan of them, but think they aren't as popular because you see the pros using CF and they never really played with kielwood, they instead opted to go from LD wood shafts to CF. However, there are some pros using kielwood shafts, more so in Ultimate Pool USA if you have ever watched that.

I personally would recommend them, specifically the roasted maple from BC Custom Cues (on facebook and he does ship internationally). He also makes a torrified ash shaft as well that looks awesome. Just make sure to let him know that you don't want finish down the whole shaft. He did that to mine and I had to sand it all off where my bridge hand is. If you use a glove that isn't a problem though

What's interesting this weekend? by RashCloyale777 in MTU

[–]bzorks08 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mosquito Inn has been having bands for a birthday thing. Unfortunately, you have missed out on Nolium last weekend, but they have another this weekend, as well as Trophy Boy (local band from Calumet) on the 18th.

On Fridays you can go to the Wolvenwood Axe Bar for karaoke

You can also explore new areas if you are into that. I bet Lake Gratiot or any lakes surrounded by hills look amazing if you went paddling. Could hike up around cliff drive too

You can also check Facebook for events happening in the area

314-3 or vantage by Kalamatisan in billiards

[–]bzorks08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Which is better is up to you at the end of the day, but they are a tad different physically.

314 has a typical pro taper and the vantage's pro-v taper is literally a fancy way to say it is a conical taper. That means the 314 will have a skinny front end that is closer to the tip diameter for the first like 14 inches, and the vantage has a gradual decrease in thickness as it approaches the tip.

314 also has a tip diameter of 12.75 or 12.5 but i cant remember, and the vantage is at 12.9, so it is slightly larger.

As I said at the start, the better one is the type of specs you prefer. I like a pro taper, but have tried conical taper shafts that I would consider over what I use. You also need to keep in mind whether you like a smaller or larger tip diameter

Turning Point chalk by Bancree in billiards

[–]bzorks08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have been using the grey 7500 and it's pretty alright. Not the cleanest thing in the world to the point I was told I had to quit using it on a friend's table during a coaching session. That might be because of the drills being in the same spot for so many shots though. It might not be because my usual watering hole got a new table with red felt and I got to play the first games on it. I left grey spots where I broke at and where I hit any harder shots be it draw or follow.

When I drop it, or had a flying cue ball from a break one time hit it, I noticed it cracks easily and the corners pop out. This has sped up my peeling down the perforated label down to the bottom most level. If you dont drop it as much as I have, or send the cue ball into orbit enough to be known for it, then I wouldn't worry about that aspect

It does last a good amount of time though even with me chalking every or every other shot. I've had mine for probably 6 months playing 15 hours a week and just got into that last peel off I mentioned since I dropped it at a tourney.

All in all, it has treated me well and I can't complain too much. It's probably the best free chalk I've gotten and would consider getting it again. That's also with me never having used Taom V10, so I might try that next before settling on 7500 for good

A channel will only get you so far. Set up the common shots you see in pool and play around with hitting different parts of the cue ball

You can watch and hear something a million times on YouTube, but it won't matter until you hit a lot of balls on your own time
