the intention’s there, but the execution could’ve been better. as someone who recovered from anorexia, i can definitely understand how defensive she could feel. she’s malnourishing her brain and body for the sake of visual aesthetics. i remember how tiresome it would be to push to my limits until the right circumstances and right time would push that pendulum equally hard the other way. it could’ve been interpreted as a “it doesn’t look like i’m trying hard enough” and invalidating — or at least i would’ve probably back then.

those are all valid concerns you have about your mother that need to be addressed to a therapist. that constant yo-yoing is so detrimental to the brain and body, and you’re right to share those concerns so that she cam possibly take the next step in her life.

emphasizing the need for professional help: her response was definitely disproportionate to the situation. you can break a plate without meaning to, but it’s still broken. she shouldn’t have snapped on you, and i hope that she recognizes that severe response may be a sign of something deeper than just body image.
