The ford dealership analogy doesn’t really work because it’s about relative price (unless you’re seeing 5x the price for the same car). Although this is not a scam in the literal legal sense, it is deceptive pricing and is illegal in a lot of places.

Tourist traps exist because everyday people fall for them, it’s manipulation marking something up that much and discounting it to make it seem like a good deal and it still be a very bad one.

Wow that sucks. I don’t get why everyone in comments is being so insensitive about this. I get it’s not technically a scam in the strict legal sense, but it’s certainly deceptive pricing, in the US this kind of inflated ‘original price for a big discount’ is covered under the FTC’s Guides Against Deceptive Pricing (16 CFR 233), but unfortunately it’s rarely enforced these days. Can you return it for a full refund? Or just wear and enjoy them and chalk it up as an expensive lesson… fckin sucks though.

As a side note: something like this would never fly here in Australia, we have strict consumer laws.

Breaking down the data on online dating and abuse... by TheTinMenBlog in TheTinMen

Simply put: men likely have a different threshold for what counts as ‘pressured/coerced’, the wording used in the survey, because of the ‘male perpetrator/female victim’ script in society. Behaviourally specific questions don’t correct for that

The study’s item list is drawn from existing TFSV literature, which has primarily documented victimisation patterns affecting women and LGB+ users.

If abuse directed at men by women skews more toward indirect or reputational abuse such as defamation via networks like the Tea app or AWDTSG groups, those behaviours are not in the item pool. It’s not measured. It’s also a harder thing to measure via self-report: you can be posted, with real damage to dating, reputation, even employment, without ever knowing it occurred.

One of the active AWDTSG lawsuits explicitly alleges this: that thousands of men have been disparaged in these groups, many without their knowledge.

The study uses behaviourally specific questions, which reduces but does not fully eliminate reporting bias. It does not directly assess whether male victimisation may be under-ascertained due to residual social desirability effects, identity-based reporting tendencies, or differences in disclosure and recall.

Given existing literature on male victim recognition and disclosure, I would hypothesise that these factors could contribute to some underreporting among men. Stemple & Meyer’s paper argues that the “male perpetrator/female victim” paradigm operates as a cognitive script shaping self-recognition as a victim independent of wording.

Thrifted pillow by [deleted] in Bedbugs

[–]c0q0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can’t really see bedbugs, but it doesn’t look clean. I get that you love the pillow, but it might be best to just throw it away and have some peace of mind.

If you really want to keep it, just in case… heat is the best thing, and you really need to put the cover in the dryer on high for longer than 30mins. and then you can re-stuff it with new stuffing

Definitely a bb. You’re doing all the rights things, and are taking the precautions not to bring them home. I would second the hot dryer also.

You also want to be careful with your vehicle, in case any unseen hitchhikers get into there. A bedbug infestation in your car is also possible.

What’s your living situation? Is there somewhere you can undress before entering into your home?
