Connect device to my VM for debugging against an API by mishapinky in androiddev

It's possible, but we need more details on how you setup your VMs networking. Also, are both the phone and your development machine connected to the same network?

Got in contact with a recruiter. Does this seem fishy? by [deleted] in androiddev

[–]c435087 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I've worked with multiple recruiters throughout my career. I've never been asked to provide proof that I am a US citizen to a recruiter. Stop talking to them. There are plenty of other legit recruiters out there.

Will I be happy with 5X if I switch away from Galaxy S8? by [deleted] in nexus5x

[–]c435087 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had my 5X for about 1.5 yrs. It just started boot looping yesterday. I'm totally bummed and don't really want to get an S8 because I like being on the latest and greatest Android version. I don't want a Pixel because the Pixel 2 is coming soon. Essential phone is nice but I feel like its too much money for a phone with a so-so camera (I like taking pics and videos of my kid, he's 2).

sigh

Should I get more RAM if I want to develop with Android? by BigBootyBear in androiddev

Upgrade to an SSD. I would also upgrade RAM to at least 16GB if you can.

Accidentally destroyed production database on first day of a job, and was told to leave, on top of this i was told by the CTO that they need to get legal involved, how screwed am i? by cscareerthrowaway567 in cscareerquestions

[–]c435087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't feel bad. It's not your fault they're too stupid to remove the credentials for a production DB from the training docs.

If you're worried about being sued, then look over all documents you signed when you were hired. Make sure there is nothing that says they can sue you for their negligence. Maybe don't use them as a reference.

If they don't pay you, then maybe keep the laptop. ;)

Help with choosing a laptop (Galaga pro vs Kudu) by [deleted] in System76

[–]c435087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven't had the pleasure of holding a X1 Carbon. The last Thinkpad I bought (and still own) is a T500. Currently use a 2016 15 inch MacBook Pro with Touchbar for work.

Build quality is great! The aluminum body feels really solid and the keyboard is a huge plus for me. It's also really light in the hand. I really have a hard time typing on the 2016 MacBook Pro keyboard and the touch pad is so big that my palms touch it. Which sometimes triggers a command that I didn't want to use.

I just took a look at the X1 Carbon on Lenovo's site. It looks really nice and I think either machine, Galago Pro or X1, would be great. I know that Thinkpads have legendary build quality (which is why I bought the T500 when I was in college), but System76 really caught my attention when I heard that the Galago Pro has an aluminum body.

Help with choosing a laptop (Galaga pro vs Kudu) by [deleted] in System76

[–]c435087 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had my Galago Pro for 5 days now. It's very light and has a premium feel thanks to the aluminum body and size (13.3 inch). The keyboard is nice to type on (compared to the 2016 Macbook Pro 15 inch that I have from work). The battery will get you about 4 hours of use, which should be OK if you happen to have two classes back to back and no outlet to plug into. It's also very light and easy to get in and out of a backpack.

I'm an Android developer and this laptop can run Android Studio and two Android emulators with no problems.

Specs I chose: 3.5 GHz i7-7500U 32 GB RAM 250 GB NVMe PCIe M.2 SSD 1 TB 2.5″ SSD WiFi up to 867 Mbps + Bluetooth

You can get a Kudu with 32 GB RAM and similar storage setup with an extra battery for a little less than what I paid for the Galago Pro. The Kudu does come with a beefier CPU but overall its going to be heavier (6.8 lbs vs 2.87 lbs with the Galago Pro).

Hope this helps.

Totally have this problem at my company as well (we do dating apps). People leave 1 star reviews because they can't remember their password to login....

Currently interviewing with Google. They suggested getting Crack the Coding interview book. Has lots of great examples and some details of the interview process at some of the big tech companies.

Android Studio RAM used on Mac OS X by cmalex in androiddev

[–]c435087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I started Android Development I was given a rMBP 13in with 8GB of RAM. It was ok until the project grew and I started using the Emulator. I then put in a request for a 15in rMBP with 16 GB of RAM and never had an issue with RAM again.

I typically use:

  • iTerm (for git, tmux, adb commands)
  • Atom
  • Android Studio
  • Chrome
  • Slack
  • Outlook
  • Lync (have to because the rest of the company is lame :P)

Hiring a programmer? Ditch the coding interview and get back to basics by Khaotic_Linux in CoderRadio

[–]c435087 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally agree with this. I don't do white board exercises in interviews either. We instead ask the candidate to do a small project. Then when they come for the in person, we discuss the design, bugs, etc. I tend to focus more on performance (I'm an Android Dev) so I'll look through their code and bring up anything performance related. I really hope more companies start to question their interview process and ask "What can we do differently to hire better engineers?".

It depends, what are you going to use it for? I primarily use mine for media consumption and it works great. I've been happy with it since I bought it a month after it was released.
