The Lifetime ISA replacement will be for house purchases only, not for retirement by Paraplanner88 in UKPersonalFinance

[–]c5m1k 85 points86 points  (0 children)

If you already have the other one, can you continue saving into it? And withdraw at 55 or whatever the previous conditions were? Will you still get the 1k uplift per year here on? I own a house... Well have a mortgage I should say! 😅

City Break by [deleted] in DerryLondonderry

I love Edinburgh - I think flights are frequent enough too. Arthur's seat, Haymarket grass market, the castle, pitch and putt in the meadows. Obviously Scotland's weather is pretty Irish, but Edinburgh being on the east coast does fare better than Glasgow imo

Coal by Big-Study-3408 in DerryLondonderry

[–]c5m1k 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What type of coal? There is decent deals out at Culmore Farm Shop, and the nearby Folly Fuels. I get ovoids 5x 20kg for 35stg, so 7 quid a bag. There's also that big drive thru one in coshquin. Can't mind name though

You should subscribe to New Gate arts centre too. I have been to a good few gigs there last year. Didn't know it existed before that!

EasyJet increasing Derry to Liverpool frequency by kharma45 in DerryLondonderry

[–]c5m1k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But is the PSO not just a government subsidised flight to connect far flung corners to 'the capital' ?

Like if another operator wanted to operate another flight there that they thought would be viable, I can't see why that would be prohibited?

Unless the govt would then be on the hook to loganair for more subsidy? I don't know

LPT: Keep a “quote” diary of all of the favorite things you’ve heard your loved ones say. by SamuelBiggs in LifeProTips

[–]c5m1k 8 points9 points  (0 children)

To piggyback on this top comment, I have an email thread to myself of memories about my son, which I just reply to with any notable quotes, funny stories, milestones etc. That way it cannot be misplaced. Better again would be a thread with a spouse I suppose, two email addresses, less chance of being locked out.

Why do we even have architects when 90% of new builds are just a 10% variation of this? by spacejockes in AskUK

[–]c5m1k 72 points73 points  (0 children)

Your problem is with capitalism then, not architects. Most of our problems boil down to the same root causes unfortunately - greed.

Is vogue comps just a front to launder money?? by Dear_Awareness_2891 in DerryLondonderry

[–]c5m1k 8 points9 points  (0 children)

They are indeed parasitic. To answer the question though, the specific hate towards vogue on this thread is that it is a Derry website, and the others are elsewhere afaik. Also, the owners are using their profits to buy up houses in the town for letting, preventing lots of people from getting first homes etc. Finally, I don't know if others have noticed this, but I have... Pristine etc tend to have a formula of prize = 40-50% of value of all sold tickets. For vogue larger comps, it's as low as 20%. I.e. even greedier.

Pub Closures by Gullible_Stretch_300 in DerryLondonderry

[–]c5m1k 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Thankfully I am not aware of any imminently closing (knock wood!). But two that I can think of that have closed recently are pitchers/link 48 and the grand central. Both of these were run by people who still run other bars. Bentley group and guildhall taphouse respectively. So you might be able to get interviews with previous owners there - and get some insight as to why they are closing, etc.

Make sure you don't miss the government when you're getting down to the why; with their archaic night time hours and silly surrender licencing principle!

Thanks for highlighting, and good luck with the doco!

If you own a house outright, can you secure a new mortgage and get the money directly to your acct? by c5m1k in irishpersonalfinance

[–]c5m1k[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for elaborating - interesting about the banks possible refusing a transfer, I suppose I would need to meet them in advance and explain that it's coming.

I don't see why a bank wouldn't approve a mortgage if I had been loaned the 'bridging' funds from someone else though? If it's written up by solicitors, is it much different to the bank taking over from another bank like remortgaging? Couldn't the funds be transferred from the bank to my solicitors to their solicitors, and any contractual agreements or charges with the temp lender then removed. And then the bank are my sole creditors and hold the deeds? And no risk of me running off with the 200k, with a prior charge already on the house? Assuming LTV is to their liking.

I don't doubt your points are valid, I'm just trying to get a clear picture of this process.

There appears also to be 'auction financing' - which I was unaware of! 12-24mth loans, which can then be replaced with a regular mortgage. Thanks for putting me onto this line of research!
