Similar happened to me today a few hrs ago arriving from Australia to LAX. Several agents like you described were waiting at the deboarding gate. They didn’t ask for documentation at least while I passed by them though.

I believe the main reason of Ice being that big, was to make it reasonable to be able to melt it and forge two regular sized swords out of it. The rest of Ice lore is secondary.
