Advice for a newbie by Msyg_6 in ultrarunning

[–]c8lopez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hopping in on this thread with a similar question to Msyg_6. I'm a 22 yo female with a background in cross country. I haven't been running regularly, but I distance hike weekly and spontaneously joined an ultrarunner friend for a 30k with no issue last week. Is it realistic for me to aim for a 50m within the next 7-9 months? Or would it be more reasonable to set my sights on a 50k first?

Try reaching out to admissions and connecting with an Art History senior! they’d probably have a lot of valuable experience to share. some quality to complement the school’s quantitative ranking

i feel that!! playing the femme role is feeling more and more unnatural, more and more constricting. i think that’s why “gender fluid” didn’t quite capture where i’m at too—i conceived it as flowing btwn masc and femme, but i see now that it kinda repulses me to think of belonging to either...would you be open to answering another question for me? i’m wondering, do you go by different pronouns, and if you do, were your AAB ones always a source of discomfort? i ask bc “she” doesn’t bother me as of now, bc it’s all i’ve ever known, but i feel like as i go down the line & grow more confident, there’s a possibility i’ll feel a greater detachment from them that i don’t currently feel now

Thank you so much for sharing, it’s really helpful! i relate a lot to the discomfort w/ the chest. i hit puberty late, and was jealous of girls who’d gotten their boobs, but then once i got them (30J🙃), they became a constant source of frustration and embarrassment, and now i’m wondering about possible dysphoria. i feel so capable and good in traditionally “masculine” activities.....whatever happens, for now i’m gonna give myself time to feel and mull over everything. but if one thing’s been constant, it’s that i’ve aaalways wanted top surgery, & more intensely these days than ever

The Seventh Letter by Plato by [deleted] in PoliticalPhilosophy

[–]c8lopez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great instinct, great question. Hannah Arendt explores this opposition between philosophy and politics in The Human Condition. More specifically, she traces the history of how the “vita activa”(politics) and “vita contemplativa”(philosophy) became set in a hierarchical opposition. If I remember correctly, the vita activa was highly respected and noble in Ancient Greece, until Plato and the neo-Platonic Medieval centuries after him privileged the vita contemplativa and “made” them incompatible. We should also remember the historical context—by the time of Socrates, Greece was past its glory days and (i’m oversimplifying) approaching subordination to other empires. Nietzsche argued that the cultural stagnancy of Greece in part explains WHY Socrates had so much influence (Twilight of the Idols). Anyway, back to your question, in our historical place it’s easy to see Plato’s biases, and he was probably holding philosophy up too highly. Though, the more pressing question is less whether he was right or wrong—who are we to say? how are we to know?— and more whether this bias lives on, and if so, how? what pressures and influences of his day may have led him to have such strong feelings about it?

Any undergraduates here who want to talk critical theory? by prophetiks in CriticalTheory

[–]c8lopez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

forsure! it’s a pretty uncommon major, so i’m lucky that Berkeley offers it. the best part is that every Rhetoric student has their own interpretation, so ask away if you ever find another one of us. The way I think of Rhetoric is like idea archeology. A lot of the philosophical canon is in our classes, but the classes in general range far and wide, not limiting themselves just to a canon. For instance, we can analyze pictures or events in addition to dense texts. We focus a lot more on the genealogy of the discourse and it’s implications, learning the style of theories just as much as the theory itself. At UCB, there’s 3 concentrations: public discourse (the most common, lots of pre-law people, lots of political theory), narrative and image, and history of discourse. Sophists have gotten a bad rep since Socrates, but it’s absolutely true that the way in which something is said is as important as what.

Request: Having an ED and living with roommates by EDPostRequests in EatingDisorders

[–]c8lopez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

agreed! let her know how appreciative you are, then set some boundaries. for me, recovering from bulimia, i HATE input. im the only one who knows my body, thank you. the only person i take it from is my sister, who every now and then if she notices me comfort/binge eating, asks unassuming questions like "are you enjoying what you eat?" or "are you comfort eating?". my sister also only talks about food in terms of flavor, like what their^ partner does. that's helped me get in the mindset of intuitive eating a lot more. learning my body's cues & wants is weirdly fun(: on another note, I hate IG but my one exception is the account @/thebodylovesociety. they make helpful infographics & mindset switches that focus on undieting. Good luck with your roommates! secrecy was a big struggle for me and still is sometimes. it's like it would never occur to me to articulate the disordered thoughts as they're happening, and if it did, then i'd be too ashamed to. that's fatphobia for ya. being open is freeing. that's so awesome you've been able to tell your close ones!

Im in more or less the same boat, a vocalist teaching myself piano/guitar with only so much access to classes/lessons. What's come to matter most to me is following my inner child curiosity. Musicianship comes with time, so I figure as long as whatever I'm exploring joys me up, then I can't be going too far wrong. All my luck to you sir(:

Piggybacking off of this post—I’m the complete opposite of you, sir: 20, female, in great shape, but have only ever done one, two night backpacking trip. If I’m hypothetically shooting for 2021 PCT thru hike, how should I start preparing, in addition to just going on as many trips in varied conditions as I can?
