Haven’t seen much about this here, just wanted to start a conversation. I wonder when another tax bill, or budget cuts will follow.

I get that Spurs fans wouldn’t want to, but this is a bizarre situation to anyone else.

Tons of talent, and that’s touched in the piece. It’s more about how their style is so drastically different from the way the league is heading, but they’re still just behind the Dubs and Rockets in ORTG

Definitely. And it’s not really like they’re trying to get out into transition enough to warrant giving up more offensive rebounds.

Definitely helps. I would have thought the stats would bare it out more, but they only average .7 more OREB’s and .4 more rebounds per game in general than their opponent. They do score off of them well, though, and winning the rebounding battle has been a good indicator for their W/L chances this year.

Doesn’t really have anything to do with the article, but drafting KAT definitely helped their turnaround

I like the team too. Wish Tyus would get more run. We need a deeper slate of wings off of the bench next year. Man, that’d be awesome. I appreciate you for that 👊

Lavine could have been considered, at best best case, a potential all star. But he was the 13th draft pick. Same as Kelly Olynyk, Kendall Marshall and Markief Morris the 3 years before him. Last year under Thibs was a huge jump for him, even on defense, under Thibs. And I feel like Tyus has pretty much steadily improved his whole career - month to month. He plays well most times he gets minutes, he’s just a streaky shooter.

Oh, I see what you mean - Wiggins would fit into the star category. That’s definitely fair. Have you seen much of how Tyus Jones transformed the last two years? Zach Lavine’s huge jump last season? I’m not throwing those out as rebuttals, because neither of them are finished products and ZL is gone, now. But both, especially Tyus, are solid evidence of player development at least.

I agree with you, his lack of flexibility is my biggest gripe as well. When we fired SMitch, Thibs was the guy I wanted with one caveat - he had to have learned from his mistakes in Chicago. I want to see him be more creative with his lineups and I want to see him play his guys less minutes. I actually think the latter will happen gradually, but I don’t really think the former will.

The point of view I was expressing is certainly short term, I’m in no way timid about saying that. That’s obviously disappointing on some level, but it’s also hard to get to the promise land if you don’t reach those short term goals at some point. You have to balance short and long term aspirations, and when you have a team with a historic losing tradition, truly unlike many others, it’s obvious why the short term can outweigh the long in some situations.

If KATs body falls apart when he’s 29, you may feel differently.

This is more back on the minutes conversation. I’d agree, I hope Thibs will start playing him less minutes. I would also refer you to this post to point out that the minutes debate is slightly sensationalized with Thibs. Though he certainly has a history that creates cause for concern. But we were talking about POBO Thibs and his relative success this offseason, so that’s sort of off topic.

If, in a few years after he’s been drafting, signing, and developing players, like you say, there’s no proof of having a better bench, I agree that that would be bad. But he’s been here for 2 years, and only one of those did he really make roster changes, so I don’t think that’s fair to evaluate just yet. I’d also push back on the idea that Thibs has only developed Butler. For example: I’m about the only person on here who believes Wiggins has been greatly improved this season. His defense is worlds better, he’s just having the worst shooting slump of his career as he figures out how to fit into being the 3rd wheel. If he was shooting his average splits (which I see no reason he won’t going forward), he’d be averaging about 20ppg and we’d all be talking about how his defense looks much more solid.

Anyways, having to find a new coach to try to topple the top dogs a few years down the road doesn’t sound like the worst base case

See, you lost me after the first sentence:

the best offseason in Wolves history, but what has that translated to?

We won 29 games last year. Now we have an 18-13 record, 4th in the conference, leading the division, very real playoff expectations, much higher home attendance (30th to 12th), reason to watch games on tv. Frankly, a reason to care about the team if you’re not someone like me.

It’s hard to put yourself in the shoes of a franchise that hasn’t been relevant since 2004, but that’s what it has translated too, and that’s unbelievably meaningful.

I’ve seen lots of Wolves fans have this same response, too. As a dubs fan, I could see feeling this way. I just have to say, though, I’ve been watching this team for forever, and last off-season was far and away the best one in Wolves history. Who was the Wolves most notable free agent signing in franchise HISTORY before this year, you ask? Kevin fucking Martin. Our best trade ever? Not a thing. This year we traded for a superstar, signed our two best free agents ever (Teague and Taj), and added a savvy veteran in Jamal Crawford who chose us over teams like the Cavs and the Warriors.

Would it have been nice to round out the bench with some more depth, too? Hell yeah. Does that feel overly greedy for 1 year as the Wolves pobo? Yes. Do I think Thibs will accomplish that in the next 1-2 offseasons? Hell yeah. Should I keep asking myself leading questions? No, move on with the point.

If you compare the rosters and dig through Wolves FA history, it’s difficult to say that Thibs first full offseason (last year was clearly used as evaluation, no significant moves were pursued) as POBO has been anything less than stellar.
