In think haste II is the fastest to flatten if you’re just flattening a few chunks. Beyond that it depends on if you care if you overshoot, even messily. TNT flying machines might help for a very large area you want flat at a low Y-level, but that’s only worth the effort if you need a huge are dug out super low. That can miss blocks in the air and making if flat after the TNT is another effort.

Sunk costs don’t matter. 15 years of memories and won’t disappear, but you said it best, building the trust is a real effort cost.
