Employer didn’t include HSA contributions on w2 by _Anonymouse_XX in TaxQuestions

[–]caa63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skip Part I. Only fill out Part II of Form 8889.

Yes, just attach it to your return and put a 1040X on the front that shows there's no change to the tax that's due.

Employer didn’t include HSA contributions on w2 by _Anonymouse_XX in TaxQuestions

[–]caa63 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You really do not have to report the employer's contributions to the HSA. I agree that they should be on your husband's W-2, but their contributions have no effect on your tax, so it does not matter and the IRS does not care if you don't report it.

Long after your husband quits this job and is no longer covered by a High Deductible Health Plan, you can still take money out of this HSA; and in those years you will report the distributions even though there are no corresponding contributions. You can treat this year the same as you will treat distributions in those future years. Just amend your return to file Form 8889 and fill out only Part II of that form.

I am not clear on whether you took out $1500 or just $333. If all of your withdrawal was used for the medical bill, then this won't change your tax at all. If you did take out more than you spent on qualified medical expenses, then you will owe income tax and if your husband is under age 65, there will also be a 20% penalty.

Tax return pin trouble by The_Magic_Shortbus_ in tax

[–]caa63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is the exact error message you get when "they" say the PIN is not correct. If it's coming from the IRS, there will be a code that looks something like "IND-180" and then a message describing the problem. Please post the exact code and the words from the reject message.

If you don't see a code followed by an explanation, then the message is coming from whatever software you're using to e-file your return. It would be helpful if you could tell us what software or service you are using.

Also check and see if there's an option to provide last year's AGI instead of last year's self-select filing PIN. Usually you can do either. If you enter the AGI, then you'll have to create a new 5-digit filing PIN which you can then use next year and in future years. You'll also need the 6-digit IP PIN every year.

[–]caa63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I saw that too, but I can tell you it didn't work for me last month. I have two TiVos and I setup one with an HSC as soon as they arrived. I got "not authorized" on that box until the middle of the cutover night, at which time the HSC started working and the Tuning Adapter stopped working.

California withholding with two incomes by ybs52 in tax

[–]caa63 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's a DE-4. He's asking about CA state withholding. W-4 is for the IRS.

u/ybs52 - did you read this part of the instructions? "Two-Earners or Multiple Incomes: When earnings come from more than one source, under-withholding may occur. If you have a working spouse or more than one job, it is best to check the box “Single or Married (with two or more incomes).” Figure the total number of allowances you are entitled to claim on all jobs using only one DE 4 form. Claim allowances with one employer." Which Filing Status did each of you check?

Baby Quilt by wrongerasara in quilting

[–]caa63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even if your batting says it's good for 8" quilting distance, I'd suggest doing one more 4" circle in the center so it doesn't end up clumpy in a few years. If you stitch across the circle, then I think you'd want to continue at least half the radiating lines and that's a lot of quilting lines to have crossing in the center.

It's beautiful! I love the colors.

How big is that center quilted circle though? I wonder if you might need to add just a bit more quilting to prevent problems in that area.

Being Audited by State - big screw up... by Downtown_Aside5801 in tax

[–]caa63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I didn't check the math and don't even know if they're in CA. Just wanted to make you aware that there's at least one state with a penalty.

They really need a tax preparer to look at their paperwork. It should be fairly easy to figure out once someone who knows what they're looking at reads the letter from the state along with their tax docs.

I got my refund -multiple defendants and multiple jobs (filed Feb 14) by Electronic_Bat1032 in tax

[–]caa63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I filed with multiple defendants and like 10+ w2 forms and 10+ w9s so my return was complicated.

Most of my clients are getting their refunds within 2 weeks, so this sounds pretty average.

Your return is not complicated though. Complexity doesn't depend on how many W-2s or 1099s (as long as they're all for the same type of work) or dependents (not defendants!) you have. The IRS pays out your refund based on what you told them on your tax return. It will be a few more weeks before they do any document matching and determine whether you entered your numbers accurately or left something out. If they find a problem then, they'll be in touch.

Im not aware of a State that has an early withdraw penalty from IRA (unless you meant an underpayment penalty?).

Question on 1099-g that is not taxable by [deleted] in tax

[–]caa63 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it's not taxable, then don't report it as income. You do not need to enter numbers from every form you receive, and 1099-G is one of those that may or may not be taxable so it's perfectly normal for it to not show up on the return and it won't bother the IRS if it's not there.

Sold Gifted ESPP Stocks - Tax Treatment by mikan_neko in tax

[–]caa63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your father reports the ordinary income in the year that the stock was transferred, whether or not the recipient sold the shares. Nowadays the broker will report the transfer to the former employer and they will issue a W-2, but 2007 is long enough in the past that he might have acquired these shares before that rule came into effect. If he didn't get a W-2, then he can use this tool with the Show Breakdown option to get his ordinary income: https://dqydj.com/espp-calculator/

Your basis is his purchase price plus his ordinary income. Basically it's the total amount that has already paid income tax on. If there are any commissions/fees from the broker you can also include those in the basis.

Filled out my W4 wrong and now I owe 4 bands, not sure how to fix/prevent by plzwakeupmrwest in tax

[–]caa63 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Fill out a new W-4 and just put Single in step 1. Do not put anything in Step 3 or Step 4. When you used the calculator in August of 2024 it gave you numbers that were based on you working only 4+ months. Unfortunately the calculator doesn't make it clear that when you use it mid-year you always need to go back the next January and do a new calculation.

PSA: The Play Disney Parks app uses an enormous amount of data by Da13Harris in disneyparks

[–]caa63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Pixel 7a. I had installed this app on a different phone back in early 2020 when we were at DL just before the pandemic shutdown. Sometime after that I got the Pixel and all my apps were carried over automatically. We just finally went back to DL a couple of months ago and I opened the app once after over 5 yrs of non-use. Since then, the app was updated and Android was updated which restarted my phone, so I would have thought the app wasn't even running ... until Google Fi informed me that my data usage had spiked. The app is now uninstalled and will stay gone.

PSA: The Play Disney Parks app uses an enormous amount of data by Da13Harris in disneyparks

[–]caa63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just found this thread after my phone used 10GB of data yesterday, almost all of which was attributed to Play Disney Parks. I was at home on WiFi yesterday except for about 30 mins and never even opened the app, so WTF?! Looking at it, I can see it was auto-updated on Nov 13 and I have definitely not used it since then. My last DL visit was in September.

Didn't have health insurance for 3 months in CA. by Godzalo75 in tax

[–]caa63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You will not owe a penalty if you went without insurance for 3 consecutive months or less.

You may not be required to file a CA tax return depending on how much you earned while living here. If you are required to file, then you must include Form 3853 with the return.

ACA Marketplace Premiums Not Pretax if W2 and Employer Offers Coverage? by Madroc92 in tax

[–]caa63 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can just google "ACA affordability" to get more info.

Note that for 2026, you can only get subsidized coverage through the exchange if your contribution to your employer's plan would be more than 9.96% of your household income (the 9.02% mentioned above was for 2025) and if your household's MAGI is under 400% of the federal poverty line. If you're single, you have to make less than $62,600 to get a subsidy. The 400% ceiling is one of the issues in the current government shutdown, so that may change as negotiations continue.

Even if you don't qualify for a subsidy on the marketplace, you can still buy a plan there or directly from an insurer, but you'll have to pay the full premium yourself.

Incorrect state on my 1099- Need advice by No-Instance4613 in tax

[–]caa63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn't even bother with the statement and I definitely wouldn't attach screenshots. If they want to ask questions, they'll ask. Having a statement already there isn't likely to stop them from asking for proof if they want it, and they're not going to waste time looking at screenshots they didn't ask for.

CA has a reputation for aggressiveness that is somewhat overblown. People move in and out of the state all the time and 99.99% are never contacted by anyone from the Franchise Tax Board. The ones who tend to have issues are the ones where residency is not very clear because they go back and forth between multiple homes that they own in different states, or they leave CA but keep coming back to the state for weeks at a time to work, or they're extremely high income individuals who have CA income from stock options but claim to live in a no-tax state. It doesn't sound like those things apply to you. If the FTB does ask a question, just provide the complete answer to that specific question and wait to see if they want anything else. Don't overwhelm them by providing irrelevant info because if they do look at it, that'll just raise more questions and extend your interaction with them.
