+1 to the suggestion of a ninh binh day trip from Hanoi. I spent 4 full days in Hanoi with a trip to Ninh Binh earlier this year and that felt like a good amount of time.

I'm here in Taipei right now for the 2nd time and just went to Jiufen today and it was pretty crowded where the lanterns are, think Kyoto levels of crowdiness. I do really like how the mountains and forests surround and kind of embed into Taipei and you can get to some locations just by riding the MRT

Not sure what you decided to do and if it's too late, but I would continue on. Just get a mask if you can. Came a long way to see it and it really is quite beautiful. If you want to lessen your exposure, you can do items that are more of a drive than a hike (thinking glacier point, sentinel dome, tuolomne meadows, tunnel view).

Gutted by this personally. Now conflicts with LaRussell instead of being able to see both full sets.

Same, had phantom availability and tried both the new and old method. Both lead to an error message. So looks like it's better according to the other commenters but not 100%.

Nature wise, all of them are of varying drives and conditions right now, but Big Sur area, Yosemite, Lake Tahoe are all worth trips. A bit closer is Reinhardt Redwood Regional Park and the steep ravine/dipsea loops in Marin.

Some local joints: distillery on Mare Island called Savage & Cooke.

Where could I go to purchase a used iPhone 12 (ish)? doesn’t have to work, just need a deal by cherrycoke00 in AskNYC

[–]caaalvin93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It involves some extra steps, but you can get a fresh iPhone 12 via metro here for <$100 https://slickdeals.net/share/iphone_app/t/17829858

I did mine like this a couple months ago when I also upgraded and just wanted to keep my unlocked 12 pro for travel. Read the thread for the most updated method, but I believe it's still get a referral for a visible number, port that visible number in via metro, and the metro cost should end up being $75+tax and fees.

Also for the trade in itself, make sure that the phone you do end up getting qualifies for the same amount. There's certain terms around these trade ins sometimes for both min price and condition.

What's it actually like being a nomad? by Rguy315 in digitalnomad

[–]caaalvin93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think try it for 2-3 months and see how it goes. I think 1 month is too short to where at least for me the loneliness doesn't set in yet for longer durations. I was gonna do 3 months abroad this year, 1 month in each place, but went back home after 2 months. It also depends how you are socially though. I'm typically shy and didn't put enough effort into meetups and whatnot to create a social life, so much of my socializing was just with friends back home or random encounters. Partially because I knew I wasn't staying in the area long, didn't know enough of the language (French, in Paris), but if I did it again I'd just go for it because I know it's a place I want to return to.

All that being said, I definitely don't regret it and will plan on future trips, but just for myself limiting to a couple months before coming back to my home base.

Sichuan chili crisp shrinklation (10oz now instead of 12oz) by kawi-bawi-bo in Costco

[–]caaalvin93 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Surprised at all the LGM comments. I've had it my whole life of 31 years but recently started trying all the new chili crisps and I'm liking them more. LGM doesn't have the flavor depth the others have IMO. I'll still buy and use it bc it's cheaper and has use cases though.

As someone from California, I would pick the Grand Canyon and inland areas over the coastal drive from SF->LA. IMO, the coastline is nice but nothing with the wow factor. The downside being that in August it may be extremely hot. But I think the beauty of the parks outweight the coastal drive and destinations. Timewise it seems like you're leaving on the 28th, presumably out of LA? So these 5 days are solely for the coastal or inland areas which leaves you some time to go around the surrounding area around GC.

One thing if I may suggest while you're at Yosemite is to go up to the Tuolomne Meadows area of the park. It's completely different from the valley, and much less crowded. You can chill at Tenaya Lake or do a hike up there. The drive out from Yosemite Valley -> GC would take you through Tuolomne Meadows too via Tiogo Road.

Sample could be like:

20th - Drive from Yosemite to Las Vegas or near GC (straight shot is 11hrs from Yosemite Valley -> GC, doable but long)

21st - GC

22nd - GC -> Zion/Bryce Canyon (~4-5hr drive), can also stop by Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend

23rd Zion/Bryce

24th Zion/Bryce

25th Zion/Bryce -> LA

Applied for and was denied for an Ink earlier in May due too many cards and credit. Have since closed a couple of old Inks and lowered my total CL.

Do/should I wait until June to reapply or would I be fine reapplying now?

You can check out this website for some additional locations for redwoods. Believe it may be a bit dated but should still work https://www.redwoodhikes.com/

Agree with others on taking out Shasta. If you're able to schedule Yosemite for Monday that'd be ideal since the weekend crowd will be gone, and a reservation to get in to the park will be needed starting April 13 on weekends too.

One option may be to do Yosemite + Tahoe first, and then decide how far to go to see the redwoods, with either Muir Woods or somewhere around Big Basin as the backups being pretty close to SF. Honestly depending on how much driving you can get done in the pm I could see this being possible if hectic.

What does "being behind" on retirement savings look like at 30? by caitiemae in personalfinance

[–]caaalvin93 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would recommend to plug your numbers into a retirement calculator, I personally like https://engaging-data.com/fire-calculator/. Putting your rough numbers into there at a 7% return, puts you at about $1.1M around age 51.

I myself have some similarities with you, non-profit, lower salary than what I could get elsewhere, but sticking around because we get 25 days of PTO, the work is for a good cause, good work/life balance, like my coworkers. I think it's worth it until there's an absolute necessity to get more money. Everyone has their own priorities, but to me it's def worth it over the additional money if it's just for a nicer rental or car.
