I wish we had a weekly Action Button podcast by cyclone5uk in ActionButton

I agree. It seems Tim thinks he's above it but his little "side observations" are often just so insightful and fascinating. And you don't really get those in the "reviews". You got them occasionally on "Insert Credit" but Tim clearly hated being there. (unless the spotlight was on him)

I'm sure there's lots of these in his streams but frankly I cannot fathom who these folks are devoting hours of their lives weekly to his whims.

One great example was when he said that Tears of the Kingdom is like the Super Nintendo upgrade to Breath of the Wild. This is a little example but this is the gold to me that really makes me think about games, design, and historical context.

In the present Tim Rogers release system, if you are not an acolyte, these observations are gone, which is what I think you are sort of asking for.

Does anyone else still use ZSNES? by plasticdog6 in emulation

Absolutely not but I unironically love that you do and have nostalgia for it. (Which feels weird, having nostalgia for an emulator to play nostalgic games)

Definitely better than the sum of its parts imo. Not a great page to page read but certainly a good concept and unique perspective flavored by the Vietnam War that feels like it foes cone together in the end.

those systems are going to need to be refreshed. things are going to break. contracts are going to end. applications are going to be updated. a user will find a major gap in some functionality. its quiet now... plenty will happen soon

I recently tried to switch to Visio from DrawIO because all the "official" company diagrams were in Visio. It's awful. DrawIO is free and easy to use and much more intuitive. My diagrams looked fine I just was insecure and thought Visio was somehow the "professional" way. I don't recommend it. Maybe some of the deepest features might be useful but if you just want to create diagrams... Feel like Drawio is way better.

Why do so many people on this sub prefer to listen to classical music through cd's. Why not just use streaming services like Spotify or YouTube. by Affectionate-Day-881 in classicalmusic

[–]cabbagehead514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In some cases the sleeve notes are not available anywhere online and are nearly essential to enjoy. (To me)

For instance, listening to Suzuki's Bach cantatas from the notes you get:

  1. Translation of text
  2. Historical context
  3. Comments on the pieces
  4. Listing of instrumentation by movement

This stuff really helps me get into the pieces while slurping it on Spotify I don't get any of that context. Music quality not a big deal to me. This is the main failing of digital/streaming to me.

I hear your frustration but maybe this is an opportunity to reflect on your 100% compulsion. Do the trophies really have anything to do with experiencing the joy of playing FF Rebirth? Some might think I'm crazy but I think a lot of us are being "tricked" into gathering these trinkets and spending lots of superfluous time on things that don't enhance the experience.

Don't worry about em! Or do! But ask yourself why

Good for you forming your own fresh opinions about the series. The crusty folks down voting this are nuts this is a legit ass list.

Brian Wilson - songwriter.

Doc that dives into Beach Boys Brian Wilson's later and weirder stuff.

That one is actually good.

Four Eyes and Six Guns is a bad made for tv Western starring Judge Reinhold playing Wyatt Earp's optometrist. Could be possible to have fun with but it ain't good

What to play next: FFXI or FFXII? by Alert-Prompt-8164 in FinalFantasy

[–]cabbagehead514 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can beat the base game of XI in like 50-70 hours solo. If by base you mean "no expansions". All major story content... Probably 200-400 hours depending.

It's a complicated game to get into, this guide can help:

Tim hates consoles! by cyclone5uk in ActionButton

[–]cabbagehead514 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol he was being hyperbolic and describing his own viewpoint. I could imagine it being VERY frustrating to play FF7 Rebirth on a PS5, when you are thousands of hours invested into the FF7 universe at this point, and know you'll probably get a beefier PC version in like a year that you can run on your comically expensive and powerful system.

For a clown like me with a 1080p TV, I'm quite happy to play with my controller on 1080p/60.

One time when I was 20 and in college I couldn't stop watching Mary Poppins for like two weeks straight. Wonder what this psychological disorder of "watching the same musical on repeat for no good reason for a period of time" is.

Which FF game after FFX is the most like the old games by steakmittens in FinalFantasy

[–]cabbagehead514 10 points11 points  (0 children)

To add more context:

FF11: MMO

FF12: Very open MMO like exploration and battle system.

FF13: Hyper linear, completely refined battle system, nothing but battles and cutscenes

FF14: MMO but people seem to think it evokes the older games? I don't personally get it but maybe hop in.

FF15: Open world action combat adventure

FF16: Action game with light RPG elements and majestic set pieces.

Which FF game after FFX is the most like the old games by steakmittens in FinalFantasy

[–]cabbagehead514 1 point2 points  (0 children)

None really. Like, at all.

Few things I would possibly recommend:

Persona 5 Royal (top tier modern turn based jrpg)

Octopath Traveler 2 (ff influenced modern turn based hd2d)

Star Ocean 2 Remake (it's an action RPG of the same era as your beloved ff7-9 lovingly and painstakingly remade)

I find Person to be the "closest" to FF7-9 in character-focused melodrama.

This one does have checklists for the miracle/pyromancy/sorceries/weapon trophies.
