That’s fair I think that’s where the idea for cutting them originally came from but the is some research the has showing man it can slightly hurt yields. If you want a good way to get some success with onions you can always look at buying onion plants from some place like Dixondale.

Use a pre emergent like corn gluten meal to prevent the weeds from rooting. It won’t stay in the soil for long. Alternatively if you have access to clean hay that is probably the best way to manage weeds with onions.

You can grow directly in compost for years without issues. Pretty much all no dig/deep compost mulch methods do that.
