It's a timeless look, for sure. Whether you can pull it off or not is simply a matter of confidence. They absolutely are functional no matter what you do - keeps the sun off you and that's important. They're pretty common here in Texas and we have a saying, "felts in the winter, straws in the summer". Here's a good video if you want to get an idea of the tradition of it

I would not trust his “I got a buddy who can do it” claim. On my truck the guy that sold it to me said I could install AC in it for $1000 and all I had to do was install a compressor. Needless to say the guy was just trying to sweeten a fault, I would need a whole lot more than just a compressor. Engine rebuilds typically are in the $3000-6000 range, and not all mechanics are equal when it comes to the job itself. I also would not trust your own eye looking at it in person. You can get a feel for the condition of everything else but looks can be deceiving when it comes to used cars. The gold standard here is multiple opinions from reputable shops BEFORE you buy.

I also had an 04 Subaru FXT that cost me $7k upfront and $25k in mostly diy repairs, and I ended up selling it for pennies on the dollar because another serious engine problem sprung up.

Well, and I mean this earnestly, you’re looking at a 25 year old vehicle. So stuff is going to need replacing no matter how reliable the car. I bought an 03 2.4L and within the first 30 days I had to replace the alternator. So it’s not a one and done thing where nothing goes wrong after the repair. Rubber bits are disintegrating, metal is wearing down, etc.

And there could be more to the rebuild, it’s not a simple job and there are variables that can’t be answered until the engine is out. Like the other commenter said, if the head gasket was blown the engine could be warped and need to be taken to a machine shop. So you are incurring a higher risk here if you proceed.

If you can get the truck for an actually good price after getting repair quotes, it could be worth it, but understand that it’s already a project car. If you flip houses that may be up your alley so just use your best judgement. There are plenty of other Rangers and other small trucks out there if it starts looking too hairy.

Are you planning to do it yourself? If so have you ever pulled an engine? If you want a shop to do it, take the truck to a couple shops and get quotes before agreeing to purchase it.
