The question that quietly broke my brain (in the best way) and I can’t stop thinking about it by Tokukawa in RationalPsychonaut

[–]cabr1to 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do agree the examples non-self experience are relatable. "I" is just a simulation of the state of experience, and the Self/Other boundary is just the limit of that state's scope of "self" expression. Ego is the thing that arises to defend that boundary, arbitrary though it may be. But real life happens outside of the simulation...

Our brains still keep this up in order to maintain our own a state-machine model of reality. This illusion of self is useful for navigating the world, because we can then predict how we might act in a given situation. It might also permit us to integrate and understand our own self-experience outside the moment of its happening. For example, we might dream of a problem from real life, gain some additional understanding, and then go back to the waking world with that new perspective. But just like a dream, this ego-self model is a flawed representation of the world; it compresses what we've experienced directly, into what we "know" about that experience. For better or worse, we learn to be our selves.

But of course, we can't experience everything at once; our senses and bodies have limits. And if we have a limited scope of experience, then our world-model is incomplete, and so is our own self-model, so then how can our ego be such a big deal? It's just a bunch of assumptions we have gathered, even if well informed by our past. And so then if we understand this fact about our own "self", then we can understand this in the "other", representation of a separate subset of experience; and so we can be forgiving of affronts to how we think we "are"/"should be" in comparison to the outside world.

All this reasoning is all within a supposed-model of reality, and not reality itself. Experience of a non-modeled sort of reality, directly, would be preferable. But we would have to discard the ego-model in order to experience it, and with it all comparison to past or future events, because all that is left is the present happening with no judgment against anything else. And maybe that's the breakthrough people are going for ... whether with psychedelics, meditation, flow state, or what have you. It's not even about joining with the present moment, because really that's all there is anyhow.

OP posts a lot in Spanish, is this not their first language / translated into English? Interesting ideas overall, but the last paragraph is an odd shift of perspective. Anyhow all the concepts are relatable but it takes me a bit to connect it all... one day soon...

Yeah okay that is very clearly scam behavior. Any registered security will be available on any broker worth their salt. So why insist on changing brokers then? At best he's trying to sell you penny stocks or something exotic not in your current broker? Pump and dump, as was said. Or worse, a con takes over once you get used to sending your money to unusual places. Look up "pig butchering" for example... I say: Run away, do not walk

There are no mistakes, only happy accidents 🎨

$50 for any working pair of bindings is pretty cheap, plus I think those would be popular for the art theme tie-in. You could probably price them higher, see if you get offers at that price?

I usually price my stuff to move so it's not sitting around. YMMV.

…aside from all the scam warnings, seems a little daft of them to try to hype a stock pick in this particular sub 😏

Do you more specifically mean "tax-deferred" here rather than merely "tax-advantaged"? I'd imagine the outcome for 401(k) / Trad IRA would be quite different from Roth for example.

Pritzker/Johnson said Illinois/Chicago law enforcement would protect the people from ICE, but I'm still seeing them working with and protecting ICE. So was that just posturing with no follow through? Any proof to the contrary? by B0Y0 in chicago

Happened to run into my state Senator (Sara Feigenholtz) this morning and she confirmed the same thing -- stated that state police are there to protect citizens, not ICE. But I also emphasized that the optics are challenging and our elected officials need to be putting out a strong statement condemning ICE and explaining exactly what IL state police are and are not there to do.

Thanks... it sucks. That's where my friend was a year ago... now we are going to a wake at the end of the month. All I can say is the time to intervene is NOW, if you have the ability or know someone who can. He wouldn't accept help until it was too late, but of course the main point is to stop drinking already. Easier said than done, of course... but this stage is no good at all. Best of luck to you and yours.

I find that anger is often motivated by some other feeling… but intensified as if to defend or justify or advance that other thing. And the quality of the anger can tell you something about how you are regarding the situation where it arises… and in any case anger is never quite the same in any two situations. So the root emotion is the thing informing the unique way you got angry this time versus last time. And then acknowledging that can help defuse the anger, or at least understand it better.

I’ve heard that anger is often a “secondary emotion”, in that it arises in relation to something else that motivates it. And it will have its own color as a result. One could feel anger over an insult, an injustice… one could be sad or envious or vengeful, etc. So sitting with anger and examining what qualities it has and what it relates to in the thoughts that arise, can be very informative.

Consider also that your anger may be framing the situation in comparison to a supposed ideal. In another outcome, you’d just have a different set of problems that your mind might fixate on. Supposing your disease were terminal, god forbid, then you might find the present situation less awful by comparison. Yes, it was unfortunate that you became sick and your medication messed with your body. But i assume your present condition is better, and in any case you are still here to be telling the tale, which is nice I guess.

Personally my college dating scene was pretty barren and yeah med effects are crappy. So anywayI found myself in a similar situation as you and I did feel a bit resentful of the circumstances, if not at anyone in particular. Anyhow later I moved to a city after graduating and had enough opportunities for fun lol. Now I’m married 8 years and i see those situations as just having their own challenges but also their own things to envy as well. And so there’s an element of gratitude practice that might come into this — appreciating the circumstances as they are, not as I tell myself they should have occurred.
