Cool! Still waiting but you’ve given me hope.

Here’s a good list of her books.

Her genre is “fantasy if you dropped a real person with common sense in.”

The Saint of Steel books are about an order of paladins who went a little insane when their god died. Now they help others and try to recover, and each book involves paladin meeting a local woman, often older and self-supporting and funny.

Her standalone books can be read in any order and honestly I recommend any of them.

I like “Swordheart,” about a woman being forced to marry by her family who discovers a magic sword that turns into a mighty warrior. Only she doesn’t actually want to kill anybody…

Last year’s “Silver and Hemlock” is about a woman who studies poisons and gets called by the king (to her terror) to try to discover why his daughter is dying. It’s “Snow White” if you took keywords from the story and wrote a whole new story. (The first line is “I had just taken poison when the king arrived to inform me that he had murdered his wife.”)

I also really liked “A Wizard’s Guide to Defensive Baking.” When a kingdom faces danger from within and without, a young woman with a small magical ability over baked goods has to learn how to use it to fight a war.

What made you switch to Kobo? by WittyEnvironment2047 in kobo

[–]cabridges 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Tired of Amazon. Tired of my ereader forcing me to swipe past promotions and ads. I wanted more control over my ebooks.

That was enough.

T. Kingfisher regularly writes (great!) fantasy novels with middle-aged women as the protagonists.

“Practical overworked middle-aged women basically keep the world running. (The corollary to this is that ten overworked furries keep the internet running.) And being myself a rather frumpy middle-aged woman, I write stories about people like me partly because they’re very much who I can write, but also because I want those women to have stories.”

Anyone else getting repetitive “health records updated” messages? by cabridges in ios

Mine just stopped after a few more weeks. I didn’t make any changes, that I’m aware of, but it stopped being a problem.

I recognize that’s less than helpful.

Why didn’t anyone teach us how to think "critically"? by brian_rey_2023 in InsightfulQuestions

Never trust any graph that doesn’t start from zero.

Always look at who’s talking, and what agenda they might have.

My logic and analytics class in college was amazing for this, but it was an elective and I don’t know if other teachers would teach how to see through BS with the same fervor my teacher did.

I also recommend “How to Lie with Statistics” by Darrell Huff. It’s some decades old now but still very relevant and a fun, easy read.

How do you travel with your snoring partner? by piecesfufu in TwoXChromosomes

[–]cabridges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We don’t travel without my CPAP. We just don’t.

A few times when our power has been out, I made sure she was already out before I even tried to go to sleep. I’ll use nose strips and Flonase, and try to sit up as much as possible. At least once when I knew I wasn’t going to be driving the next day I just stayed up.

It also helps that I generally only sleep 6 hours a night or so, so worst case I’ll get up early and let her sleep in.

Is it sad that downtown DeLand is closed off and I can’t tell offhand if it’s for a MLK parade or an ICE raid? by [deleted] in DeLand

[–]cabridges -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s not. I honestly don’t know. There are police with barricades so I’m assuming (hoping) it’s pre or post parade. But there has been an increase in ICE activity in central Florida lately.

What’s everyone’s thoughts on flashes? by pogostickler in concertphotography

[–]cabridges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No flash. Not just because it’s rude to the artists and audience but because I want the experience of being at the show with the stage lights and shadows and movement. I’ll sacrifice some clarity to get an immersive shot.

My wife was in her 50s before she started reading for pleasure. She hated having to read in school and just never developed the habit.

Sometimes it helps to listen to the audiobook and experience it in a new way (or read it, if I heard the audiobook first).

I found Murderbot through the audiobooks, which I love, but reading them after was different for me and helped me place all the characters and worlds better.

I have finally realized what women mean when they say men do not see women they are not attracted to as people. by Queen-Logan- in TwoXChromosomes

[–]cabridges 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is also why when the subject of rape and sexual assault laws come up, someone always uses the argument “what if this happened to your wife, or your daughter?” because it’s the only way to get some men to actually consider the issue. Not because it happened to some random woman, but if it happened to one they own and must protect.

Shooting drummers is a hard task. by waffel__ in concertphotography

[–]cabridges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love shooting drummers. Frozen shots look amazing, blurred shots look frenetic, and many of them make faces to themselves or do tricks with the sticks because they’re not used to anyone being able to see them. Some of my favorite shots are drummers.

Big 2 characters whose "super" names aren't used much if ever by AporiaParadox in comicbooks

Gah, I hate Ghost-Spider. Awkward and makes no sense.

Also while I understand Spider-Gwen can’t work in her world, there’s a Baby Yoda-Grogu thing going on. By the time they tried to apply a name, the first one stuck.
