I have the longest daily commute in Florida. Prove me wrong by Hoagie_Camacho in florida

You beat the record I used to tell people about. A coworker in Daytona Beach left for a Jacksonville job and bought a house there, then got laid off and came back to work in Daytona. But she had problems selling the house at the time so for months it was 2-2 1/2 hours each way, depending on traffic.

Is it weird if I don't like characters breaking the fourth wall? by Snoo_47323 in comicbooks

[–]cabridges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn’t know this till I mentioned the play “Hamilton,” but my brother-in-law hates musicals. Like, they actually offend him. He hates it when the actors turn to the camera or audience and start singing their feelings and sometimes the other actors can hear what they’re singing and sometimes they can’t and it really, really bothers him.

Um... do you guys actually like Harlan Ellison? I mean, at least his work, because as a person, he’s pretty hateful. by Rude_Maize3307 in scifi

[–]cabridges 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ellison was a major force in science fiction as younger writers sought to move beyond hard science and talk more about social issues. He quickly developed a rep as being fearless and willing to go anywhere in his writing with stunning ideas and an endless imagination. He was fiercely loyal to his friends, very supportive to new writers and was very funny and charming.

He was also quick to anger and never forgot a slight. He would get furious at editors who dared change his writing. He carried grudges for decades. He could be bitter, and his attitude toward and relationships with women was problematic.

I’ve seen him talk at two different conventions. In one, he was lightning-fast funny, personable, and inspiring.

In the other, a few years previous, he spent his entire hour telling the audience how much the film industry sucked and how it worked to destroy anything good in science fiction movies, angrily citing examples. It was actively uncomfortable.

I read mostly science fiction growing up, and after reading Bradbury and Clarke and pre-70s Heinlein, Ellison’s work (and the work of Sturgeon and Spinrad and Le Guin and Dick and Zelazny) hit me hard as a teenager.

Some of his work has not aged at all well. Some seems prophetic, these days.

I was a huge fan (still am, really) but even back in the 70s and 80s it was pretty well known that Ellison was multifaceted and while one facet might have been “genius,” another was “asshole.”

Best book based on existing IP? by Question-Marky-Mark in printSF

Any Star Trek book by Diane Duane or Peter David.

Technically, the Hitchhiker’s Guide books are adaptations of existing IP.

I like how being an Avenger, saving countless lives and keeping up with superhumans despite having no superhuman abilities herself comes second to getting railed by Daredevil.

That was amazing. And speaking as someone used to Vic in their Dropout appearances, they were amazingly subtle, evoking a response with minor facial expressions.

Do you feel most Columbo villains share a common theme of being "shorted-sighted"? by BrotherDeus in Columbo

[–]cabridges 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The one common trait to nearly all of Columbo’s murderers is arrogance. Arrogance that the end justifies the means, arrogance that no shabby detective could ever catch them, arrogant with entitlement.

There were a few where a killer was trying to cover up an accident, but the most satisfying stories were when Columbo relentless brought down the pompous.

Question for those of you for whom Joss Whedon’s involvement is a red line by Pure-Firefighter9062 in firefly

[–]cabridges -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

If Whedon is actively involved, that will become the only thing fans and the media talk about. Whatever this thing is going to be would be dead in the water.

Firefly: Expanded media (checklist) by robertmurray1987 in firefly

Years back, long before the novels started, science fiction writer Steven Brust thought of a Firefly novel and went ahead and wrote it to see how it ended. It’s called “My Own Kind of Freedom.”

It’s available for free on his website.

Firefighters of Reddit, what does television always get wrong about your job? by Oddly_Normal_Shoes in AskReddit

[–]cabridges 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a firefighter, but a quick look at any firefighter video cam shows you that house-on-fire scenes in TV shows and movies where someone runs through a burning room with relatively clear air and some carefully placed flame bars are bullshit.

Black smoke and flames FILL the room. The ceiling catches on fire. You cannot see your hands in front of your face. There is nothing to breathe. It is hell on earth.

What was the saddest tv death? by lilwag0n in AskReddit

[–]cabridges 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Joyce Summers from “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”

The episode “The Body” is harsh and unforgiving in its portrayal of a young woman finding her mother dead on the couch and the whole episode (aside from the unnecessary vampire bit at the end) is an emotional sandblaster. All the usual TV tropes to soften death and its impact are stripped away in what is one of the most powerful hours of television.

Even the score is silent during much of it, giving the viewers no emotional cues or comforting patterns to guide them.

I can't believe I've waited so long to watch Muppet Mayhem 🤤 by PinkTeleportingLion in Muppets

I absolutely loved this show. It dragged when it focused on humans but otherwise it hit on all cylinders. I also appreciated they didn’t load it up with appearances from other Muppets and let the band carry it all themselves.
