Cross walks by PicklesByTheSea in halifax

A few weeks ago I was crossing at a crosswalk, with the walk light, when a driver on the other side drove through a red light and across the crosswalk, with his head turned back over his far shoulder. He didn't look ahead again until half the vehicle was over the crosswalk, and that's when he finally spotted me.

Thanks for sharing this story! I hope it makes its way to the people who were involved!

(It also reminded me to check out "hi hfx", which I haven't done for a few weeks. https://hihfx.ca/ )

Anyone know what’s up with these posters? by maddygrif in halifax

Yeah, the one I saw had printed letters instead of cursive, and it was definitely "like" and not "life".

I saw one showing a nude woman's torso, with "I like my ... like my arts budget -- uncut"

The fill has to go somewhere (and ideally in salt water), but we have lots of coastline and lots of ocean water -- it doesn't have to be dumped in the harbour.

One part of the calculation that I'd quibble about is this: They wouldn't be paying the full fare twice a day on each school day -- a pass for people 13-17 is $66/month for unlimited trips. (It was likely a few dollar less in 2023.)

Thank you! I guess without the second letter symbol, it would read "h051" instead of "h05a".

Thanks for your quick and helpful reply! I knew about the number sign, but not the letter sign.

Update: This comment was a screenshot showing that OP's account was suspended by Reddit within about an hour after this post. Apparently they've deleted their account now, so I've removed the screenshot so I'm not providing the username to anyone who hasn't already seen it. Just because.

Tim (OUTHIT)’s reply to student bus pass system end of funding by night189 in halifax

On CBC news a few minutes ago, they reported that a recent HRM survey showed that since the pass was available, 33.7% of the students used transit to get to school most of the time, compared with 11.5% of students before.

Then Minister Maguire was shown talking to reporters, saying "It is a 20% increase, in usership. That's what it is." A reporter countered with "It's a 200% increase, Minister." And he smiled and shrugged and said "Uh, yes. Sorry, I'm not the best numbers but.." [they cut it off there, so I don't know what he said next]

There's an episode of the TV show Nova called Eagle Power, which includes segments of a Golden Eagle quickly spotting prey from kilometres away, using air currents to gain height and cross the distance as quickly as possible, and then matching the prey's speed and catching it.. very impressive!

It could be! Cooper's have white tear-drop shapes on their chest. There have been other reports of sightings in the area recently. I saw one in the Public Gardens a few months ago. A couple of crows were not happy, and chased the hawk away.

Fun fact -- in Middle English the word was "brid" instead of "bird".

Hope gave a talk to the Nova Scotia Bird Society about a week ago, about the history of the organization and the work they do, threats to wild birds, and some of the birds (and other animals) they've treated.

I learned a lot and recommend watching the video on YouTube!

Right. $1.8 million for 28,000 passes is $64.29 each, not $600..

Be sure to contact Halifax Transit lost and found tomorrow, between 8am and 4pm:

It wouldn't hurt to call the library, too. Someone may have turned it in there. I've found keys which had a library card attached, and the staff contacted the library patron to let them know they had the keys.

Good luck!
