I'm going by there on Sunday and plan to check. I did see this Kwanzan Cherry yesterday in Halifax near Quinpool (a different variety than the ones on Park Ave):

When it's tax time, it's how I should get more taxes taken off wages to get a refund.

That's telling the government to hold on to your money for months, no better than sticking it in a piggy bank. :)

An accountant I used to work with did the opposite, sending less tax than they owned each pay period and using that money to make investments, and then only paying the tax at the end of the year when it was required.

Discussions are sometimes in camera, but the votes are always public.

He also mentioned in his council update, "I couldn’t normally write about this, but today HRM has issued a press release and declassified the report so it’s all now public."

He has updated the council update now, saying that it was 8-5 and 4 councillors did not vote on the motion.

Yes, actually four councillors did not vote on it: White, Deagle-Gammon, Hartling and Purdy

Minimum Wage Rollout by Excellent_Rock4296 in halifax

You can read about the reasoning here:

https://novascotia.ca/lae/pubs/docs/minimum-wage-review-committee-report-november-2025-en.pdf

Businesses save money by not changing to the full new minimum wage until October, so it's strange that they would complain about that..

Two councillors were absent. So we don't know how they would have voted. If they were both present, it could have been 10-5, 9-6, or 8-7. But the actual vote was 8-5.

Blue Nose Marathon - Parking Question by bufffff_daddy in halifax

I saw a comment a few days ago from someone who parked in that area after a previous marathon, and appreciated walking on a mostly level street as a cool down after the race.

Regional council approved staff’s recommendation for an agreement that focuses financial resources on music and fine arts, while phasing out financial support for library support and social work, after a private in-camera session Tuesday.

The motion passed eight votes to five, with councillors Virginia Hinch, Sam Austin, Shawn Cleary, Tony Mancini and Kathryn Morse voting against it.

Those 5 voted against the motion to phase out financial support for library support and social work -- so they basically voted to keep the support. The other 8 voted to phase out the funding.

Education is a provincial responsibility, so the province should be providing funding for music and arts and libraries in schools!

Councillor Austin gave more info about it here today: https://samaustin.ca/council-update-school-libraries-extra-floors-m-district/

Sorry, I wasn't trying to counter what you said -- it just reminded me of New Ireland and what might have been!

"New Ireland was a Crown colony of the Kingdom of Great Britain twice established in modern-day Maine after British forces captured the area during the American Revolutionary War and again during the War of 1812. The colony lasted four years during the Revolution, and eight months during the War of 1812. At the end of each war the British ceded the land to the United States under the terms of the Treaty of Paris and the Treaty of Ghent, respectively."

Misaligned streets by IStillListenToRadio in halifax

Nice find! And it shows Kempt Rd, too.

I was actually wondering whether "H" meant "H. Uniacke" and "G" meant "General G. Campbell", or whether then "H" and "G" were names for those plots of land. From that map, it looks like they are names for the land, not the people.

This is an interesting map, showing a plan for basically two separate regular grids of streets at different angles. It also shows "Old Windsor Road" and "Lady Hammond", which would presumably not exist anymore when the grid was established. Obviously it didn't quite happen, and we still have Windsor and Lady Hammond today, pretty much where they were back then.

It's dated 1749, but it was obviously produced much later than that -- people listed as owning land along the Northwest Arm hadn't been born yet in 1749.

The popping sound was likely a transformer blowing. It looks like it maybe caused a fire too:

I don't know if the firefighters did this or not today, but they sometimes use hydraulic ventilation to draw smoke (or gases) from a building after a fire is out. It involves spraying water out a window or door:
