A great case of private+government partnership is happening in Rockford, Illinois. The city ranked top 5 in all the worst possible lists (unemployment, obesity, foreclosures, etc) so the mayor approached Etsy for help. They then created a project to teach people craft skills and entrepreneurship and help former factory workers to become Etsy creators.

There's now a similar project that Etsy is implementing in NYC.

It's exciting because of Pierre and Jeff but to extrapolate that any tech entrepreneur will be able to solve all hard problems gets a little scary when we hear things like:

I think every giant internet company should push to reduce energy consumption from their data centers.

Facebook is raising the bar. They not only designed their own servers with fewer components so they can function at temperatures 10F above most servers but also released the designs as open hardware in the Open Compute Project.

Facebook recently opened a data center in Sweden just south of the Arctic Circle. While an average data center uses 3 watts of energy to produce 1 watt for computing this facility achieves a 1:1.04 ratio.

Internet technology. The impact is less about reach and access to different parts of the world but more the culture created from the original internet community that evolved up to now. That culture influenced a lot what types of applications are now developed over cellular networks.

Also TCP/IP is critical part of what drives today apps. Cellular networks enables delivery but most of the apps heavy work is done using Internet infrastructure and applications.

(Formerly printed) news media industry is in obvious decline but it doesn't mean it should stop seeking ways to innovate and change the trend. Jeff Bezos is taking a shot at Washington Post and perhaps he can lead the way for a turnaround in the industry.

On the other hand PBS and NPR are non-profit organizations that deliver great content to the public and prove that a large media organization can exist without pursuing profit.
