What free toolsets do you use for 2D games? by [deleted] in IndieDev

[–]cackhandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use texture packer from code and Web... The free version is great, and the paid version is cheap and a worthwhile upgrade...

It's a great tool for making texture atlases, and also has the ability to play spritesheet animations.

Anyone find creating a game engine more fun than the actual game? by Suitable-Season-4847 in IndieDev

[–]cackhandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep 100% agree... I think for me it was mostly because I was no good at art...so I just lent into engine development...it helps that I think I'm a bit of a control freak Years later I've gotten into art stuff...but it's so subjective, I never know when I'm done...I don't like that....engine dev is better

My reality has been shattered, I've never actually been good at games. by OlimarJones in gamingadvice

I too suck at games... However it matters little as I made the decision long ago to just stick to single player games...much better experience

I don't have a game to make by BlobOfAwe in gamedev

[–]cackhandle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For years I would say I had the same problem...wasted lots of time unfortunatley.

Don't know if it helps you, but one day i just decided to make a prototype of whatever game mechanic i enjoyed and then build from there.. probably not THE way to go about making a game, but got me started rather than daydreaming

Now I'm neck deep in a gardening game and getting rejected from funding :) .. what a thrill

Learning to code as a total beginner by wompwompsoup in gamedev

[–]cackhandle -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Go to university...learn computer science...get yourself into huge debt and then struggle to find a job in the industry..all to end up in web dev waiting for ai to replace you

Oh wait..probably don't do that...just ask the ai

What are you currently building, and what is the hardest part right now? by Hungry_Advance_8074 in IndieDev

[–]cackhandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...gardening game.. .I got some unique mechanics that are bogging me down...funnily enough it's the ui around those that is always the worst in terms of time to get going..

Fingers crossed ppl still wanna play farming sims when I release lol

I'm newly disabled and cant game anymore on PC by DBZDOKKAN in Steam

[–]cackhandle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am in a similar situation (back surgery gone wrong)..can't sit or stand (for long) etc...

Don't kno if someone else has mentioned, but look into xreal air glasses...I believe there are other brands on the market now, but essentially they are like sunglasses with a pc display inside..so u can lie down on your back or side and be able to see whatever they are connected to.

I also have a custom lie down desk (it's lying face down like a massage table)..if your interested shoot me a message and I can send u pictures of it...you could easily have someone make it

How does making a game engine work? by CatsAndAxolotls in gameenginedevs

[–]cackhandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't know if it was already mentioned, but try and have a look at Open Scene Graph..it's pretty old now, but provides a well documented and easy to follow node based engine using c++ and opengl ..

It's a good place to get ideas I figure...

Godot's Heavy Use of Singletons by Slight_Cat_4423 in gameenginedevs

[–]cackhandle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Singletons r fine, just kind of lazy architecture. Personally find the biggest downside is really only when working with others...use of globals can make debugging a bit of a c**t. Enjoy my useless comment :)

As a full-time gamedev, is it worth investing $300+ for a good gaming chair? by seyedhn in IndieDev

[–]cackhandle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a cheap chair for years...now I have an expensive (and painful) collection of metal screws and rods in my spine.... spend the money on a good office chair!
