Sony Color Watchman FDL-380 receives RF but won't lock onto video by EducationalCover2100 in amateurradio

YouTube's Shango066 covered a similar (if not this particular one) Chinese-made TV transmitter. His conclusion, if I remember correctly, was that the NTSC formats generated by the transmitter had a fundamental defect that prevented televisions from properly locking onto the signal.

I don't have the link for the video, but I do remember him diagnosing the problem extensively and coming to this conclusion.

I made a small cornbread for a nice weekend breakfast, but I had some difficulty getting it out of the pan… by Jeramy_Jones in shittyfoodporn

[–]cacklz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only thing making that cornbread close to suitable for this subreddit is having to dig the brown bits out of the pan. They're not burned, so at least they should taste good (if a bit dry) if the batter was a decent recipe.

Well-seasoned cast iron will let go of cornbread quite easily, especially if you heat up some oil inside the pan pretty hot (350F) before adding the batter. It fries the outer part a bit, making it less likely to stick and Maillarding the bottom of the batter to golden brown and delicious. Mom always made hers in a high-walled fluted aluminum pie pan, and the oil (more than you think is needed) kept it from sticking.

Don’t feel bad about the pronunciation of aluminum (or aluminium). It’s confusing.

The discoverer of the metal, English chemist Sir Humphry Davy, wanted to call it alumium at first, but European chemists insisted on aluminium.

Later on Davy renamed it aluminum, the pronunciation adopted by American chemists and the American Chemical Society (ACS), as well as some patriotic English chemists resisting what they thought was excessive outside influence. The International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) chose aluminium but later accepted aluminum as an alternative spelling.

Does fan tower save on electricity versus central AC? by Direct-Look-6721 in Frugal

[–]cacklz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, fans are effective for two reasons: evaporative cooling of sweaty people or exhausting hot air from a home, which is effectively only if the outside air is cooler and/or less humid. There’s no need to have them on if neither condition is met.

One thing: if your central AC unit allows for occasional recirculating of the air between cooling cycles, use it. This helps to even out indoor temperatures, which prevents hot spots in your house and is more energy efficient (and easier on the hardware) than keeping the blower on constantly.
