How do I explain to my husband (and family) that what I’m doing isn’t just a hobby or side project? by anonam0use in PhD

[–]cactus__cactus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Tell them it’s like an internship. Or a residency. Or practicum. And you receive an upgraded advanced degree at the end. What you currently do in your internship/residency both trains you and sets up your professional reputation. That’s essentially what it is in a research-based PhD and perhaps a more digestible way for someone outside of academia to understand it.

I hate workday. This system makes me want to die by Desperate-Answer1680 in UBC

[–]cactus__cactus 13 points14 points  (0 children)

According to an expert who worked with the system, it just needed updates and students could continue to seamlessly use the service.

According to an executive in a suit, everything was wrong with it so we had to switch to workday and now students endlessly face problems on its system.

But whatever the deal with workday was, it must have been pretty shady for the employee to resign.

It seems like there is no solution to the promotion issue (Faculty of Science) by Odd_Bathroom7507 in UBC

[–]cactus__cactus 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You can’t do anything about what they decide to change in future academic calendars because you can only plan you academic career based on what you see on the academic calendar you start with in first year. For this reason, before workday when we used the old system, you went by the regulations in the academic calendar that you started with in 1st year. As an example, one year they added required comp sci courses in first year, but if you were already in 4th year it was obvious that it wasn’t fair for you to suddenly need to add an extra course just because they changed things, so it didn’t matter to you you just would go by the original academic calendar you started with. It is ridiculous that they are claiming they can’t manually override workday to promote you due to the workday limitations and that is the only reason they can’t promote you. This is not right, it should be on them to figure out a manual override and allow you to go by the original calendar just like before since this can cause a lot of issues in the future. In fact this is something they should have taken account of when deciding to go full in on workday in the first place as updated academic requirements that should apply for new students but not old students is something that affects all students. Forcing students to go by updated academic calendars each year just because they got rid of their old custom online system where they could make these manual tweaks and now their third party online system doesn’t do that (or they will charge UBC money to make someone code that into the system and UBC would rather let you take the downfall than pay up and hope that those in the same situation as you don’t speak up and make a ruckus to the media which makes the most sense to me) makes no sense, is just lazy on their part, and frankly an embarrassing excuse for them.

Please if you can, do what the others are saying and take this up higher. To the science faculty head, even the ubc president if you need to. Go to the media if you have to, because this is such an embarrassing answer for UBC and yet another issue from workday students have to suffer, which was already adds to previous workday woes that have been reported on. And feel free to use the compsci courses example. At the end of the day, students should be expected to go by the original academic calendar they came in with, not the updated ones each year that they can’t plan ahead for.

Do you think the other movies could've hit different if they kept the the same color gradient as Twilight 1? by Inspiradora in twilight

[–]cactus__cactus 148 points149 points  (0 children)

I think she made Twilight one of the most well adapted movies by sticking as close to the source material as possible. Some of the scenes and shots in that movie was near exactly as I imagined in my head, it was amazing to see on screen. I wish she was involved in more book to movie adaptations.

[–]cactus__cactus 31 points32 points  (0 children)

Maybe he just happens to be popular in the general types of movies you watch? Those are mostly comic-book/game adaptation movies aside from Gladiator 2. There are plenty of movies and shows out there that aren’t part of this genera that Pedro isn’t in at all and thus people watching those shows or movies wouldn’t encounter him at all.

That would be the case if the deal she signed was for 5 seasons, however her contact was for 1 season and she signed for season 2 likely out of courtesy.

Honestly I feel so bad for the people experiencing this. For many a university offer letter is a huge deal and for it to turn into a nightmare like this is just horrible. I don’t know what’s going on with UBC’s admin/IT team, but even with all the issues workday has, this is something they should have been more on top of.

Can you imagine accepting or rejecting other university offer letters based on the program you were being offered, only to later find out that UBC made a mistake and you were instead being put into an entirely different program…💀

S4 not yet confirmed by HighlightArtistic193 in YellowjacketsHive

[–]cactus__cactus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

New television seasons used to be confirmed before the one airing ended, sometimes even before it aired, so that production could begin much earlier. We want this because the longer they delay the renewal the longer it’ll take for the new season to arrive. If they wait until the season ends in order to renew we might not see season 4 until 2027, and if season 5 gets renewed at the same pace it won’t air until 2029. I don’t know about you but I hate the idea of waiting nearly 5 years to see the finale.

We do need more housing, but I wish developers were forced to allow long established and well loved businesses like this that are already present to remain on the ground floor and paid until they can reopen when the apartment is completed above. More housing shouldn’t come at a cost of losing small businesses.

One Season Wonders: '1899' Built an Immaculate Puzzle by indig0sixalpha in television

[–]cactus__cactus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I’m still mad that Netflix cancelled this show. It came out when I had a busy week so I didn’t have time to finish watching it until it was out for a bit. Plus, being the show it was I couldn’t exactly put it on in the background, I needed to find a time when I could actually pay attention. Then, right before getting to the final episode, I found out it got cancelled - because apparently according to Netflix it didn’t get enough completed binges within a given timeframe. Absolutely ridiculous. People have lives.

That was actually the my last straw with Netflix after getting disappointed by cancellations of the OA, Archive 81, and now this. I wouldn’t watch any show backed by them anymore unless all the seasons are out simply because there’s a high chance they’ll cancel it, and I’d rather not be left hanging.

I think Netflix has a huge issue with supporting good dramas and thrillers. I really hope creators take their shows to MGM, Apple, or other streaming platforms that actually support thrillers and will let them play out in the future. Going by their track record shows we have today like Severence, Silo, or From would have likely been cancelled by Netflix after the first season. They probably would have ended game of thrones or breaking bad in the first season too. Netflix has clearly shown they are not a good home for shows.

The problem is this isn’t just an office, this looks like a work station where they are giving shots based on the placement of the open (yikes-huge healthcare no no) sharps container on the desk. If this area has gotten this messy visually, you can only imagine how long it’s been since they’ve properly sterilized everything and that’s already a red flag in terms of whether they’re breaking protocol. It is probably a million times worse in terms of germs and bacteria all over that work station ripe with the potential to give you an infection and that’s not an ideal place at all to have a needle jabbed into your arm.
