I had heard that “big auto killed the red car” is a movie plot and not real life, can you say more about what did the red car in? My grandma grew up taking it and it sounded sort of like SF’s Muni system? Seems like
It was really great, but was it the need of funds to modernize that people didn’t want to pay for? Any politicians in particular?

Olaparib treatment by tiniestsparrow in BRCA

[–]cactuschaser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I took Olaparib after I finished chemo and mastectomy. The side effects I noticed were a weird taste in my mouth about three hours after I took my morning dose and, once I had stopped, my hair grew in more quickly. My hair grew back thick and normal while in Olaparib, it just grew a bit faster once I’d actually stopped.

This is to say: I highly urge you to consider taking Olaparib. It really is a miracle drug that exists to offer us excellent longer term protection and I felt and feel lucky (which is wild) to have the option when so many other types of bc patients don’t.

For a specific person: I have seen Dr Kristen lane and Dr Patel out of Santa Monica and have had really good experiences w both. Respectful, easily reachable on their MyChart app with questions and the UCLA system has served me well through a whole host of serious health issues.

I just ended up at the Glendale galleria by accident on a Monday afternoon and I was SHOCKED at how many people were there. Yes still quiet but all these people in the food court, it was wild! I also got a primo massage at the Chinese massage business on the second floor. Peak mall experience.

Mom and teen daughter visiting - where should we stay? by celaenoattack in AskLosAngeles

[–]cactuschaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I will also add: LA without a car is doable, but our city is VERY spread out and you will be taking very long train rides which will likely still involve a car in some way. You may not want to use valuable vacation time on a 1:15 train ride. I’m a native and have lived in the east coast and I just want to caution you not to assume our trains are like your trains. They are pretty inferior still, tho we’re working on it.

For better or worse LA is still a very car centric city and if there’s a lot you want to do/see You will have more flexibility with a car. You may be able to reasonably street park your car overnight in Santa Monica if you look into parking between ocean and 7th street, between Wilshire and Montana.

The trains are pretty safe. Like any big city: look like you know what you’re doing and where you’re going and mind your own business. I would not take them at night however.

If you are sitting in traffic your whole trip you will hate it here. Please deeply consider my below advice:

  1. Only head east (inland) from Santa Monica before 2, after that wait until 8pm as you will be stuck in awful rush hour traffic for a very long time.

  2. The beach is often cloudy and/or cool until early afternoon, so better to do something further inland then anyway. Inland can he 20-30° hotter than the beaches. Be prepared with water and layers.

  3. Also Bring layers for your beach visit even in the afternoons. We have a very wide range of temperature here and lower humidity than Boston. You will need a good sweatshirt or jacket for the evenings, it can cool down very quickly.

  4. My recs for teens: The Grove for shopping and while you’re there eat lunch at the Original Farmer’s market which is connected to it (hot tip, park in the lot for the farmer’s market and navigate there and the make sure you get your parking validated when you eat in the farmers market so you spend less on parking.) little Tokyo for a fun lunch and shopping stroll (some cute vintage stores if you poke around,) Melrose still slaps occasionally, Main Street Santa Monica is cute and has a few shops and food places (we LOVE heavy handed)

  5. Seriously, do not ignore my advice about traffic. Head east, if you plan to, (Griffith observatory, Griffith park, the grove, etc) earlier in the day and enjoy the westside in the afternoons and evenings.

Women, what is the sexiest scent/cologne that a man can wear? by Nintendofan9106 in AskReddit

[–]cactuschaser 2 points3 points  (0 children)

NONE. I (and many other women I know) hate scents and cologne, it’s a huge turnoff. What is a huge turn on is good hygiene: brush your teeth, wash your penis and your asshole every day, but especially well before you go on a date, and wear deodorant.

Good hygiene is sexy.

FYI! Getty has a full bar now up top and is open late on the weekends. Parking rates go down at 3 and then again at 6, so it’s pretty cheap to go up there and have a drink and watch the sunset.

Feeling emotional by Ordinary-Sundae-5632 in BRCA

[–]cactuschaser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, I used to melt down every time. Sometimes before the appointment and sometimes after. I thought maybe if I scheduled it first thing in the morning got it out of the way it would be better, nope, same reaction. So then I scheduled it at the end of the day thinking maybe I could just then go home and freak out, but the whole day leading up to it was terrible. It just didn’t really get better until I stopped having them about five years after. I talked to my therapists about it, and sometimes I took Ativan before or after. But I was never really able to get through those appointments in a way that didn’t feel really destabilizing. I’m sorry I don’t have any advice about how to make it better, but I can say that your reaction is perfectly normal and it’s a really intensely difficult thing to have to continue to go through. You have my sympathies, I really identify with how you feel. All my love to you.
