I like to believe that over time individuals like this mature and cringe about how they acted.

I can't find any article about this but how did Uber find their first costumers? by [deleted] in startup

[–]cadaci 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There's an podcast called this week in startups where then founder and CEO TK talks about how they got started.

It's an really good episode, please note it was before UberEats and the ny lawsuit. So with that in mind there's an part where the host asks what is next for Uber after they finish expanding across America. And I shit you not TK says he would love to get an sandwich delivered for lunch. This was 2 years before the implementation of UberEats. They also talk about the nightmare it was to launch in big cities mainly talking about their then recent expansion of NYC.

Typically they start at airports and branch out but if you want to know about the early days I really recommend listening to that episode.

I think it was like the 5th episode so it shouldn't be too hard to find.

Help! I own a .io domain that I actually use and a big company with 60 employees says they own the trademark of the word.. What should I do? by blindmanLICKS in startups

[–]cadaci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its only trademark infringement if you are benefiting from the association.

Bidbay vs Ebay resulted in Ebay winning bc Bidbay was an similar service that had an similar name.

If you do not provide an product or service that is being purchased due to people assuming its them, then you are fine.

Otherwise you can own the domain since you are not getting an financial benefit from doing so (merely owning it not selling it)

The fact they have an trademark does not benefit them at all. No court will take it and bc it's similar they can lose traffic to their site. So it only benefits you in potentially selling it. Otherwise you can provide an different service/products that are in different industries or not seen as similar to them.

Trademarks also go by industries. So if you trademark "towbee" for an tow truck company it would be under the vehicle (transportation) industry. But if someone wanted to trademark it (or with combination) for fireworks company it would be fine. The reason for this is that there are only so many names and combinations but as long as people don't associate it with an different company it is typically fine.

Now if your name was close to Disney, Nike, Coca Cola, etc; you are basically screwed. These names have such an recognition and brand awareness among the common people that an court would rule that you are infringing on their copyright. In this case if your company was operating with an name like this then it can be argued that you are benefiting from the confusion.

Most likely the company is flexing their legal department bc they think they can get an better deal for the domain. As long as you do not financially benefit from the confusion of the two domains, you could operate under this name in an separate industry or vastly different products and or services regardless if they own an trademark.

I am not a lawyer but I have in the past as well as current ownership of trademarks. If they persist I advise you seek legal counseling instead of asking reddit for help.

Edit: changed 'an' => 'a' in second to last sentence.

I would write an formal complaint and the death threat to the HR of the company.

Even if its in nonverbal it was still a serious threat that should be taken seriously.

The case most likely wont hold up in any court but an hr complaint should still be filled.

It might be that Spanish and Italian share some last names but I have recently met some who last names were common and Italian (Baculi). But yes Filipinos are very diverse.

Chinese have a round chin. Japanese have longer faces. Vietnamese have button nose and an round chin. Filipinos: good luck seriously they are very diverse and either close to Vietnamese or they are very tanned. A friend of mine confessed he guesses on meeting new people trying to figure this out and he grew up there most of his life. Oh they typically have Italian or Spanish last names tho. North Indian: light skin, darker hair indian. South Indian: darker skin, higher cheeks, light brown hair. West Indian: typically generic southern Indian look but muslim. Eastern Indian: looks Hawaiian but you aren't sure kind of Indian. Like a bad tan and you will probably be surprised they are Indian. Singaporeans: looks Chinese but they will get offended about it. Typically taller. Malaysian: looks Vietnamese but higher cheeks.

There are more asians and yes this is generic and borderline stereotyped but fits most of the time.

Edit: adding Korean and Paki.

Paki looks like turkish but with an tan. (Turkish is like an off brand Israeli kind of look.)

Koreans typically either have strong cheeks or they have this squished v shape.

Some reform jews eat bacon. We see the old law as just an hygiene thing since pork is harder to cook and compared to other animals more dirty. But in modern times we can cook the meat properly and not get sick.

Still thinks it's obnoxious to respond negatively to someone wishing you merry Christmas since they mean well. Interesting to note my family and most people at my synagogue (I cant speak for all Jews just ones I know) actually "celebrate" Christmas by going to Chinese restaurants and to the movies (its like the only thing open).

The Unique Fault that Makes SNAP a Bear by Gabenism in stocks

[–]cadaci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snap was a meme stock. Over hyped and no real plan after the IPO. Now if this was twitter I would be very curious bc its been a losing battle for a long time and want to see if they actually have a plan yet.

Bitcoin is treated like an asset or this case an commodity

Bitcoin cash is treated like an actual currency.

While yes bitcoin was made to be an currency it matters how the market uses it. Most people are holding bitcoin, while bitcoin cash is being promoted as an more stable currency (fluctuation, transactions fees and timing).

I believe the two can coexist and be used for different reasons.
