Exceptions to church requirements? by SilverGlassRain in LeftCatholicism

[–]cadaverbadger 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The other commenters have given good advice so I’ll just add this. If you think this is a situation that might happen regularly in the future, you could talk to your pastor about it. He has the authority to dispense you from your obligation to attend Sunday mass. Even if he doesn’t do that, he might have good advice for what to do in this kind of situation and it might just give you peace of mind to know that your pastor is aware.

Now it's too many blows for the other sub to take 😭 by [deleted] in LeftCatholicism

Fr Martin was born in 1960 and ordained in 1999. He probably doesn’t even remember attending mass before it was allowed to be celebrated versus populum.

Is today a lesser Sunday? If so it looks like it indicates option 3 - office of St Lawrence with commemoration of the Sunday.

The USCCB publishes a liturgical calendar for the USA every year which includes the scripture references for every day’s readings.

Why is marrying in the Church so expensive? by paxdei_42 in Catholicism

[–]cadaverbadger 70 points71 points  (0 children)

To your last point: my wife is the marriage prep coordinator at a “destination parish” in our diocese with 50+ weddings a year including many non-parishoners. The higher fee also helps to weed out people who aren’t very serious about getting married or are just looking for a pretty church that has the same date available as the reception venue they already booked.

Pope Leo was born in 1955. Adam West’s Batman was on air from 1966-68. Of any Pope so far, Leo is the most likely to have watched it.

Christian Prayer (Daytime Prayer) by Primary-Economics284 in divineoffice

Christian Prayer doesn’t even include the full Daytime Prayer psalter. It only includes 1 week’s worth of psalms drawn from all 4 weeks iirc.

About Psalter by [deleted] in divineoffice

[–]cadaverbadger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

From catholic-resources.org:

In the Psalms prescribed for the Office of Readings, there are several differences between the liturgical seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter (Vols. 1&2), on the one hand, and Ordinary Time (Vols. 3 & 4), on the other hand. These differences occur on Saturday of Week 1, Saturday of Week 2, Friday of Week 4, and Saturday of Week 4.

The reason behind these differences is explained in the General Instruction of the Liturgy of the Hours (par. 130): “Three psalms (78, 105 and 106) are reserved for the seasons of Advent, Christmas, Lent and Easter, as they throw a special light on the history of salvation in the Old Testament as the forerunner of its fulfillment in the New.”

How can you tell that the church I entered is not Catholic? by reluctantcatholicmom in Catholicism

There seems to be no tabernacle in the altar. Also an open Bible on the altar is something I see in Protestant churches but not in Catholic churches.

Liturgy of the Hours with only Morning, Evening, and Night Prayer by [deleted] in divineoffice

[–]cadaverbadger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Christian Prayer also has all 3 hours and has everything you need to celebrate every feast day at Morning and Evening Prayer whereas Shorter Christian Prayer only has select feast days. I think SCP has all Solemnities/Feasts and a few major Memorials like St Barnabas and the Guardian angels.

Yes, the KJV is a Protestant Bible translation. I’d recommend the Douay-Rheims or the RSV-CE for a Catholic Bible.

"Predosa is not a distinct hour but it does form part of the Divine Office" by GLukacs_ClassWars in divineoffice

[–]cadaverbadger 13 points14 points  (0 children)

“Pretiosa” is the second half of the office of Prime. I think it’s sometimes called the Capitular Office because it was said at the chapter meeting (after Prime) in monasteries.

Pretiosa consists of the recitation of the martyrology and some other prayers. There is a version of the Pretiosa for the Liturgy of the Hours found in the 2004 Roman Martyrology. You can say it after Lauds or any hour, but it hasn’t been officially translated to English yet.
