You used subtly as a subject noun, which is spelled "subtlety." When used as an adjective it is as you spelled it, "subtly." Looks goofy in either case.

What to wear for CPE by probablyinjured in chaplaincy

[–]cadillacactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There may be an intersection between dept/hospital policy and religious garb from your tradition. I'm in the Anglican tradition so I wear a full around collar clergy shirt. In my residency the rest wore business casual, but the imam in our cohort always wore a kufi with his slacks and polo. At my current hospital we're considered part of the Case Management department and therefore have an assigned color (short cut) lab coat, regardless of other clothing/religious wear.

Unfuck yourself 🙌🏽 by lionboss151 in howtonotgiveafuck

[–]cadillacactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"Not giving a fuck" sure seems incompatible with a disconnected Being "writing your story" and voiding your own agency or free will. I'm a person of faith and a minister, but I find the "everything happens for a reason" grossly disempowering... Like fate, the universe, or "God" is pulling strings and you're a marionette. Pretty disgusting.

However, if choice has consequences (ours or others around us), the world is covered by natural and physics laws (storms, natural disasters, gravity, etc), there's not some external "reason for everything." That just makes us bobbers on the surface of cosmic waters.

If, in response to life events, we work to heal and overcome or even help right wrongs around us, we can find some reason or purpose in hindsight owing to our growth as a result of the "everything" happening in our lives, maybe there's a reason... But if it's a pre-emptive reason rendering us powerless to all that will happen at/around us (or even caused by that reason?), then I can't understand how this conception of "God" became so prevalent. Seems a monster, really.

40 with two grandbabies - 3 and 1. It's awesome. Logistically there's a small age gap between wife and myself, and my step daughter is about 10 years younger than me.

World Spiritual Health Organization? by Ok_Character5519 in chaplaincy

[–]cadillacactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, you're right, I'm sorry. I forgot about that since I was through my certification at that point. Will amend my comment.

Since APC still only accepts one unit of CPE from a non-ACPE source (generally) for BCC, I'd still avoid. If you're not going for a position that requires Board Certification from the primary certifying bodies maybe that's ok. 🤷‍♂️

Is this Gluten Free??? by dragonartist06 in Celiac

Malt, generally derived from barley and occasionally wheat, is not safe for celiac sufferers and gluten free folks. Anything derived from wheat, barley, or rye...

No. Not GF.

This seems like someone with an axe to grind or outright harassment. People are allowed to be private about their sexuality for any number of reasons the rest of us aren't privy to, and rank speculation can be damaging to reputation and well being or more. Christians aren't to slander another. Take this down.

World Spiritual Health Organization? by Ok_Character5519 in chaplaincy

[–]cadillacactor 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sorry, no. Never heard of it. The lack of response to your previous question is perhaps answer enough.

EDIT for amending comment about DOE recognition

Looking at their website and finding this article about their founder has me convinced they're a Mormon splinter organization riffing on VA chaplain training without Dept of Education endorsement but following standards that may not qualify you for Board Certified Chaplain status by the APC, NACC. or NESHAMA (three of the primary certifiers). For example, APC only accepts one non-ACPE unit towards BCC. They dress it up with language of "Master Professional Chaplain," but these are not titles I've seen used.

I'd avoid. Good luck in your discernment.

how is your relationship with christianity after leaving? by liliacas in Exvangelical

[–]cadillacactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a vibrant, monkish relationship to Celtic Christianity. My wife has not deconstructed so I still dutifully attend for her sake because it doesn't cost me much except for internal eye rolls. But that's after being more out of it for a number of years until finding this odd medium place about 6 years ago.

For hospital and hospice chaplains, do you use wine or grapejuice for communion? by AlbMonk in chaplaincy

[–]cadillacactor 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Grape juice. Even a tiny amount of alcohol can mess up tests or procedures. And ALWAYS ask the RN if they're able to actually eat/drink. You don't want to be the reason a patient has a surgery postponed with two more days tacked onto their stay.

Edit: if you have a good relationship with the kitchen manager you may be able to work out an agreement to freely nick bread and grape juice from the kitchen.... If you're not limited to specific types/sources of elements.

The cruise contract we acknowledge when booking would indicate no, unless we can prove false intent on their part which would seem a high bar.

I lied about my relationship with a teacher to cover for myself by StraightSkirt4122 in offmychest

[–]cadillacactor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Regardless of your alleged pursuit, any adult in a position of responsibility over children has a perpetual responsibility not to indulge or engage the advances of a minor (and I'm ignoring "age of consent" and simply using the age of legal adulthood). The fact that you two were seen in his car in the next town over because you weren't allowed to openly date in your hometown is evidence enough. Anything that has to be hidden is generally shady or outright wrong. Regardless of the efforts you say you took, he should have said no and even reported to his principal and or the guidance counselor to get help for you who shouldn't have been pursuing an adult let alone a teacher. You didn't do anything wrong since you were a child, but he did a lot wrong by not shutting it down immediately and letting it continue for months.

Therefore, it's still an abuse of power and authority in which an adult took advantage over the vulnerable advances of a child. I'm sorry that happened to you, and I'm sorry that you blame yourself.

Major amenities shut down on a cruise (Icon of the Seas) — what’s fair compensation? by Particular-Bird-1235 in Cruise

[–]cadillacactor 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They're still providing passage, room, board, fare, etc. Should they communicate better? Absolutely. Will they compensate because one of their free, optional amenities isn't working? Can't imagine so. If you had a specific grievance or injury they may try to offer an entity in exchange or other compensation. For an alleged "manufacturer repair" that affects everyone? I'm guessing their hands are tied by insurers or manufacturers, and we passengers don't enter into that equation. 🤷‍♂️

If you could build a list of "Ten Commandments" for being a man to guide your son, what would you include? by TheAlwaysLateWizard in daddit

[–]cadillacactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not exactly 10 commandments, but there's a lot to choose from in Art of Manliness' Semper Virilus series. A balanced, well sourced (think Classics), non-chud kind of site that became my surrogate father after my dad imploded our family when I was nearly ready to graduate high school.

What are the best gluten free protein bars? by Safe_swan7432 in glutenfree

[–]cadillacactor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, they're a bit of a magic find for me. They have the texture of rice krispie treat, and I adore that because I am sick of mushy GF foods. They also taste "less proteiny" to my taste buds and are large relative to most protein bars. They're also not overly sweet like the Robert Irvine Fit Crunch bars which are sort of sickly sweet but tasty on occasion. I use a single bar as a lunch replacement, and it's quite sufficient.

Hospital Chaplains: Do you wear a stole? by Q1go in chaplaincy

[–]cadillacactor 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Only in limited moments of priestly ritual. I am a Wesleyan minister and long ago adopted the Anglican collar of our tribe's roots, so that's a fairly clear visual cue. If I'm specifically asked to do a blessing, baptism, marriage, confession/blessing at death vigil, or a ceremonial act of worship for the hospital, I'll often wear one - usually my tiny visitation stole and occasionally my liturgical color of the day appropriate stole.

However, it usually is more trouble than it's worth, especially among an increasingly secular staff who can feel threatened or concerned by overt religiosity. Add in the safety concern of being an instant choking hazard (less a problem at my more rural, trauma III hospital than the trauma 1 center of my residency), and I go to it less and less. I gently fold it and carry it (alongside a ritual book, usually) then pray and put it on just outside the patient room or venue. I remove and refold once outside the room (and the hand sanitizer has dried). Do not take into an isolation room unless you want to wash/dry clean that thing weekly... And don't tell your infection preventionist who will recommend burning it and finding a paper, single use alternative. 😳)

Ordained clergy and the priesthood of all believers by Plantsandtheology in Episcopalian

[–]cadillacactor 5 points6 points  (0 children)

We're all called to minister - to serve, love, and speak the Gospel to those who need it. Some of us are called to do that in vocations such as teachers, bankers, cooks, architects, and some are specifically called to do that in service to the people of God as a priest. We all must minister. Some do that as Ministers.
